One word: JaguarThank god
Looking at UC4 and Horizon, there's no need for a PS5 anytime soon.
Completely agree, and hopefully no mandated PS4 compatibility.
But when will consoles die?
Smartphones and tablets were supposed to kill them ages ago.
Wait, what? No forward compat of course, but at this state, backwards compatibility is absolutely mandatory. There's no reason not to include it.

Maybe we can finally lock up the crazies that think there won't be a next gen reset.
No. And why would they? Can't Sony build their own x86 chips?
It better be BC with PS4 games though.
Fat chance with the size of the current combined install bases of the PS4 and Xbox One. You would would be handicapping the PS5 and Xbox One for at least 3 years before sales picked up to acceptable levels.
If it is fully backwards compatible, it is de facto an iterative update. Except that unlike with phones, new games won't run on last generation's hardware.
If it's not backwards compatible, I'm not buying it.
Thank God, I hate this half step trash.
Damn this is pretty big news, I fully support that decision, but we already know MS won't follow this path, so how will the market respond to it?
It's gonna be interesting who will set the tone in the future, hopefully Sony, I think we all should support them.

He means no mandate that games must work on PS4, like the current relationship with Pro and OG PS4. I'm not sure why that would ever be a thing on PS5, but yeah.

MS did not promise forward compatibility, only backward
Why was Scorpio an "Xbox One" instead of an "Xbox *new name*"?
The reason is simple.
The next Xbox after Scorpio will be a new name, and will be the cut-off point for forward compatibility. It will still play Xbox One games, but Xbox One and One X cannot play the games made for that system.
PS2 had full backwards compatibility, as did early models of PS3.
"Iterative updates" refer to forward compatibility (which I hope the PS5 will not have).
So you consider PS2 (which was fully BC with PS1 games) and Wii (fully BC with GameCube games) iterative consoles?
No it isn't. That makes no sense. Is PS2 just an iterative update of PS1? It plays all PS1 games.
PS4 Pro is an iterative update because it plays all the same games as the OG PS4. If PS5 plays exclusive games, it is not iterative, even if it also plays PS4 games.
Big question is whether this will continue the whole "PS4/Xbox One Hardware Family" thing that has been such a focus with these half-step consoles.
It's been marketed as an ongoing thing, so is PC-style backward/forward-compatibility going to happen or was that all just hot air?

Point me where he said that.
And if you can't, please slap yourself with a fish.
the thread already answers this question
if the PS5 is the start of a new generation then that means there's no mandatory cross-gen/forward compatibility like what MS is trying to do. PS5 will have exclusive games.
It'll be interesting to see if the next generation marks a schism, with one of the major platform holders sticking to the traditional generational model and the other going with the iterative mobile style of hardware releases.
This is what I think will happen.
PS4 / Xbox One
PS4 Pro / Xbox One X
---- cut-off point : new gen -----
PS5 / Xbox Two
PS5 Pro / Xbox Two X
It's not playing out too well for MS at the moment, with a 50% smaller userbase one can only hope they make back the R&D money.
If not from the hardware then it will be a slight loss // cut into their earnings from services, can't say one can be happy about that.
Bigger problem for them is 1st Xbox sold 24m+- XB1S/X might end up at 40-50m not really big numbers in comparison to your rivals.
If their next console sees similar result I wonder how long they'll stay in the business then, which ain't good for the industry in such an event.
Two consoles launched back to back at $499 while you're "losing" the generation, lacking exclusives and all that, a new console every 2 year isn't the answer.
In the end it is the same thing as Sony is doing ATM, just one will hard reset the industry and make their new console the baseline for development.
I wonder if that's what the industry really needs constant shift due to new hardware being released.
PS5 news everywhere today...
It better be BC with PS4 games though.

That should definitely happen, makes transferring to a new gen much easier. It better be BC with PS4 games though.
Yea....makes me think we might start seeing some rumors in a few months.
PC is a different platform, AAA games are being developed with consoles in mind first, PC approach in consoles means pathetic leaps instead of one significant, it complicates the market, there won't be a clear target and it will never feel like a big jump. What is the negative of a PC like approach?
I'm pretty confident the next Xbox won't be named "Xbox One" and will also be a cut-off point where exclusives under the name of the new box will be made.
Tldr; a NEW generation.
How do we know that? They keep insisting that the One X is part of the Xbox One family and that tells me they're going for a clean refresh as well for next-gen. The only thing we can be certain of (given their current direction) is that it will be full backwards compatible from day one.
Exactly.
They can say that all they want but if the PS5 is just another x86 console with more raw power (whatever X times better than the PS4Pro) that's just the "smartphone model" they are referring to.
I'm not against that tho, to me it looks like a natural evolution of the console cycle. We will probably see a PS5Pro-like after that if the PS4Pro proves itself on the business side. (I don't really know rn but I think it's doing ok, right?)
Yes it will have to
Its probably gonna be expensive.
600 dollars
I don't know, Sony has been really crappy about BC... I wouldn't say it's a given.
so, does this mean that the PS5 will NOT run PS4/PS4 PRO Games?
This would be beyond stupid. Especially if the next Xbox, which will be about the same power as PS5, will play all Xbox One and Xbox One X games. (+ a lot of Xbox 360 and OG Xbox games).
Maybe we can finally lock up the crazies that think there won't be a next gen reset.
