Fuck, now I'm nervous. Increasing the stakes like that... it's truly do or die time.
I really don't think that Korea is the end all be all thing in SC2. unless you are like Idra and Jinro and constantly be at the ro8-4 (or maybe the finals) you really are probably better off playing in the west.

There is so much money with so many LANs and online tournaments popping up every day, I think it's gonna be a more balanced, global scene and not entirely focused on one country.

Actually reading a lot of progamers reaction to the question, most of them said they'll probably go to korea if it's 1 week tournament deal and not permanently like the Liquid guys.

I agree with everything you say.

But GSL is still the tournament with the highest prestige in the world. Longest running tournament, biggest prize pool, highest production values, populated by the top players from the toughest server.

I'm happy that there are more viable options for western progamers to earn the money and increase visibility of the sport in SCII, but I want to see foreigners competing in that scene. :D

Alternatively, Koreans coming to the biggest tournaments in EU/NA when these get up to the standards of the GSL. I'd love to see more of that.

dont worry more info will be added to the OP + first reply (I would have killed you if you beat me to that first reply corran)

Also IEM world finals are going to be march 1 - 5th

looks like no good koreans will be going, and unless moonglade loses his firstgame I doubt he'll go too

Hyyyyyyyyyyype.

Fuck yeah, new GSL season! Thanks for the thread.

Just for those unfamiliar with the player lineup - these guys are our foreigner heroes for this season.

EGIdra - "The Gracken"

Liquid'Jinro - "The Gorilla Terran"

FXOMoonglade - Handsome badass from Australia

LonerPrime.WE - Chinese superstar

Liquid'Haypro - solid Zerg player

Liquid'ret - just coming off a 3,000€ win from Assembly in Finland

Liquid'Huk - always with his trademark hoodie

Poor haypro, his tag is so underwhelming lol.
Just looking at his picture, you can tell he's sad and disappointed you're not hyping him as much as the others.

bEFoR.jpg

HayprO has never gotten any results to make him stand out. He's always just been the guy who's there, supposedly good, but we never see it.

Pretty much. Unless the guy pulls a Jinro and shoot straight to the top in a matter of weeks I don't see him doing much in Korea or out.

Couldn't this in part be because the GSL is so small right now? What happens if the GSL reaches a similar size to what it was in SC1 with similar prize pools?

Personally i hope that there is a strong scene for SC2 outside of Korea. Would be a lot fun having a variety of big tournaments and it would be interesting seeing players from the different areas facing.

Even so it was half said in jest, I feel my assessment of Haypro is pretty fair, actually. Wasn't intended as a slight either or anything. :lol I like the guy! And he is a solid player, has won a GosuCup here, a Zotac Cup back in the beta, beat strong players in various clan war games... and yet, his biggest payout came from getting fourth in the Pokeridol tournament TLO won, behind Select and Sjow.

I've seen him referred to as ret jr - not quite the macro beast ret is, and maybe even more vulnerable to early all-ins.

But you know, there's always the chance he suddenly makes a real deep run and everyone just goes "oh yeah sure, Haypro is actually good, you didn't know?"

:lol he looks like such a sad puppy. ;_;

And that picture was taken after he successfully qualified for GSL3! >_>

Hope you like updating the brackets and results thread!

Also at least I gave Corran credit when I sorta stole his stuff!!
Picks are too tough right now when I can't think clearly after watching 9 games of GSTL.

That's actually why he chose Group B and Clide, to set Clide up against MvP in case he advances. Who was saying there isn't a grudge between the two? Idra is such a troll. :lol

Man, this is actually a megaton for the Western scene. I'm just sad that it's so sudden and we don't even get to see Idra in this season. He's been our ambassador over there for so long...

I also wonder how they'll fill the extra spot. Maybe have another Wildcard playoff amongst the 9th - 16th ranked Code A players. Or rather, they'll probably let an additional player in from the up and down matches. Best chance Code A players get.

I wonder why there is such an urgency for Idra to leave. It seems like he'd have a decent chance to go far this season with the new maps.

NASL!

But seriously, the decision was apparently made a couple weeks ago, it's just the announcement that was kind of sudden.

Welp, I guess we're waiting on the HUGE EG announcement.

GSL has to be a little disappointed. The Idra/Jinro match has to be on the milestones real.

Has to be a California / Oregon giant ass tourney imo.

Sad that Idra won't participate but I can understand him. He will get a chance to stay and train with his team and with all the western tournaments coming up he probably stands a pretty good chance of winning some money. I bet we will see some of the Liquid guys returning as well.

Oh defenitily.

Like I said I see Ret going back (and probably Hypro) if they don't make it to code S this season.

NEW YORK (Reuters)- Major League Gaming, the largest professional competitive video game league, will be expanding to new markets outside North America thanks to a new partnership with IMG, the global sports and entertainment company

IMG, which is run by billionaire private equity investor Ted Forstmann, will boost the profile of Major League Gaming, a league where players compete in video games like Microsoft's "Halo: Reach" and Activision Blizzard's "StarCraft 2" in tournaments across the U.S. and on the Internet.

IMG will focus on marketing the league in the UK, Germany, France, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil as well as in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, IMG Media President Michel Masquelier told Reuters.

"We are creating a world league where people are going to be able to measure their talent against each other in various disciplines," he said.

Masquelier said that the partnership will involve hosting regional championship events in different countries and boosting awareness of the league's brand through merchandise, licenses, prize money and online subscriptions. He said players in the league would gather points to try to improve their worldwide ranking. These rankings will "drive the business," he added.
This is pretty significant as well and another incentive for top foreigners to remain in the west.

Goin a bit heavy on the foreigners for my picks, except haypro who I just have no experience seeing him or watching his games. That's a toss up.

WTFUUUUUUUUUU

Idra just announced on SotG that he'll be returning to the US indefinitely, effective immediately. He will not be playing in this GSL.

:/ well that's disappointing. I was looking forward to seeing him in epic macro games on the new GSL maps. On the other hand, he must have been lonely for the last few months, without a team house, plus the Koreans hating on him...

Kinda sad to see Idra go like this

He did pretty well last season and he was definately improving.

That said it means that someone from code A will get another opportunity

Guys like Squirtle, JJobSu or Bomber (okay this aint happening) in the Code S this season ? hell yeah!

It doesn't; gomtv already said the players in his group will get free wins, so no replacement this GSL.

Idra was not constantly in Ro8

He was kicked out in the Ro32 two times he advanced to RO16 one time and last time he made it to Ro8 (which was the peak)

this sucks. they did a replacement match when another guy left and polt prime came in instead of him

probably it is time constraint problems as the season kicks off next week

idra should have announced this earlier and should have given some code A players a chance

the whole thing looks like a big fuck you to GSL somehow (considering he got good money from them this is pretty illmannered. but hey its idra.)

the difference is that you have a pretty constant income if you are a high ranker in korea

everyone in code S gets a minimum of prizemoney (aside of the money they receive from the teams)

so staying in code S alone is a pretty good deal

He stated on the stream today that GSL actually told him to still go in and make his picks, despite them already knowing in advance he was planning to leave. go figure.

that makes the whole situation even more weird. the other guy who was replaced by poltprime announced his departure right about that time. gom could have just made the minitournament they did for code S with two seats on the line
