This is the best my ISP could offer me for my area. Please help GOOGLE! Save us Canadians :(

Kansas? Really?
What a terrible testing grounds.

Excited to see this hopefully hit Boston and the surrounding areas! I don't get FiOS where I live, but the town 2 minutes down the street can get it, it's lame.

I imagine it had to be a midsized city with preferable regulations to new infrastructure projects.

Not sure where this eventually goes, but uncoupling internet access from content providers/cable companies is where we need to get.

Why is everyone excited? I mean, what's the price and speed? I need to know the pricing an speed before I get excited. I'm sure it can bring prices down a bit by having extra competition, but by how much?

the further down the political ladder you go, the more crony shit goes on. I can't believe municipal fiber hasn't taken off yet as its been successful in its few small places.

Im excited because Ill be getting fiber? The speeds on the major carriers here is terrible, and the price is high for what you are getting. I expect this to be at least on par pricewise with Verizons FiOS. That would be MORE than waaaaay better than Time Warner. Theres plenty to be excited about.

Price will be less than Cable companies - under $40 would be my guess (maybe much less).

Do you really think google got the bright idea of setting up a fiber network, in one city, for the hell of it?
"For the hell of it" might be a good description. Of course, they wish they could set this up all over the world instantly. But there are so many problems with infrastructure and legislation, that Google is willing to live with a negative outcome on this and write it off as a learning experience like Wave and Buzz and so many other products. This is a gamble -- a test to see if it's worth their time, money, and effort.

It's certainly not possible that this will come to a major city like New York in the next 10-15 years. Like, holy shit, not possible. And when that many years go by, technologies change and needs evolve.

For someone like me, I don't need 100Mb. I'd be happy with 10Mb for around 20 dollars. I don't do any heavy downloading. Perhaps they'll have different speed categories like Verizon. Different speeds at different prices.

State legislatures actively prohibit municipal internet.

its all bullshit... and i work for the largest ISP in the country. Municipal fiber would increase speed and satisfaction if done correctly. Not everyone is going to get covered by it, but well done suburbs, etc. would be perfect places to do this, and I'm sure would be a boon for local business and businesses looking to move in

Its time for Kansas city to save everyone. The more internet prices go up, data caps, and speed goes down, the easier the decision for google to jump in. In the long run, that stuff hurts their bottom line.

Lobbyists man, lobbyists. Its insane the power they have. There is one city that stood for its people, and forbid a mono/duopoly from forming. Forgot the name though. Wish more were like that.

Bah I can't look away. And wow They are giving a terabyte of GDrive space per account. I didnt think about the stupidly good benefit of cloud data with that kind of speed

I hope it spreads.

But it's just Google going "Look at what can be done, if your entire company is just a giant advertising provider who has monetized most of the internet, so we can spend frivolously and not worry about getting much revenue for our costs in any market that spreads access to the internet we've monetized."

I just made google some money viewing this thread, viewing the page to type this post, and when I hit submit, and the thread is refreshed, I'll make them some more money.

BUT BRING THAT SHIT TO SEATTLE!

I know plenty of other cities can whine.. but.. Seattle has it TERRIBLE. And considering how tech heavy the economy is here, it makes no sense. Amazon.com is headquartered in the downtown of a city where people who can see skyscrapers from their apartments are limited to either Comcast (which granted, is decent, but it's still cable tech), or DSL that is often limited to 1.5Mb.

And even Comcast, in huge chunks of Seattle? The wiring is so bad you can barely use your internet and 1 HDTV at a time.

BLARGH!
