But... Google Now isn't the Siri competitor, is it? Now seemed like something entirely different to me - a way to automatically get the information Google thinks you'd want at a certain time or in a certain location, depending on what you've previously searched for, etc. It has nothing to do with voice (asking for information, telling the phone to do stuff, etc.), which is what Siri is all about. What seemed much more Siri-like was the improved voice search which uses the knowledge graph to actually "understand" what you're asking. And that's something entirely different from Now, as fas as I can tell.

EDIT: Well, I guess these things will be working together. But Now on its own doesn't seem to be the answer to Siri.

Yeah. That's not really similar to Siri. The voice search they showed, on the other hand, is.

Google now sounds great for my phone but fairly useless for my non 3G Nexus 7....

Is there a way to set it up so the Nexus automatically tethers from my phone when it is out of wi-fi range?

Yeah that voice is very smooth and natural given what we've had so far (siri/navigation)
I want Schwarzenegger to answer my questions :D
Also Andrex what are you watching now?

If it saves the wifi AP, it should be default connect when it detects the connection available. At least, my tf101 will automatically connect to my GNexus when I leave the coffee shop.

"Better Web App Development Through Tooling"

Paul Irish. <3 <3

I must say that the events thing will actually get me to use google+ again. Seems like a killer feature for it.

Oh God, Windows XP green/silver theme Notepad with Comic Sans, writing HTML 4.01 transitional. My new hell.

Google + on my phone is amazing.

Now if anyone would actually use it...

Significantly improved on the tablet too, though some images are still scaled/cropped poorly eg. a friend posting the latest XKCD comic strip:

Almost had me there Google.

...how else do you propose they aggregate this information...?

Sports
Google Now keeps you updated on your favorite sports teams in real time, with live scores and upcoming games. You can even can buy game tickets on the fly.

Shown based on Web History

Places
When you’re on the go, Google Now will suggest nearby bars, restaurants, and places of interest. You can quickly jump to Google Maps to get more info, reviews, or even make a reservation.

Only shown if location services enabled

Weather
When you start your day, Google Now shows weather for your current location and work.

Only shown if location services enabled

Flights
Google Now keeps you up to date on flight delays and traffic conditions to the airport for flights you've recently searched for.

Only shown if location services and Web History enabled

Next appointment
When you have an appointment, Google Now checks traffic so you can know how long it'll take to get there. You even get a notification for when you should leave.

Shown based on synced calendars and current location

Makes sense.

No, I already have my search history disabled on Google. I mean on Now--where they could save my search history but not use it for anything else.

I don't know. Seems like a pointless capability if you don't share required information for it to perform its intended function.

I must be taking crazy pills, but I'm seeing a lot of positive reactions from the tech blogs for the Nexus Q.

Problem is separating whether the device in and of itself is good verses is the device worth the asking price.

Nobody has said the device is horrid. It's honestly not. Everyone just said it's not worth $300. So it's bound to get some good press from the hands on.

Not a fan of that implementation at all. Not only are you giving up full access to your search history (privacy concern) but also relying on some computer algorithm to determine what your likes and dislikes are which means there's room for error.

There should at least be an alternate way to manually input that information imo.

the preview ota is here

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1737340

edit: looks like it will only install on the galaxy nexus from the play store :(

Guys, this will NOT work on any other ROM than takju IMM30B (which, incidentaly, was the ROM shipped with the Play Store GNex devices).

There are NO images of takju IMM30B, so the only way we will get this to install is if someone can provide us with a nandroid backup taken from a device that was running IMM30B at the time.

What does it do? The twitter stuff for example? Yet another web framework?

It bundles all the web frameworks together you want to use based on your y/n answering, and builds it into an awesome default project. Like a super-bootstrap. I think. Can't try it out since it sin't released. :(

amazing stuff this morning ... LOVE the G+ and earth updates, and youtube.

android putting some distance between it and pack for sure

there's now so much boilerplate crap out there for web apps you need a boilerplate generator?

did nobody just stop, take a step back, and really think about what they're doing here?

Andrex is just a Paul Irish fanboy. Let him work it out of his system. ;)

I'm an iPhone user but all this stuff looks great. I would seriously consider an Android phone at this point. I just want the OS to be as cosmetically smooth as iOS, then I'm potentially in.

They realized they were doing something smart by putting them all together and making them work seamlessly instead of leaving it to developers to hack poorly thought out solutions together?
