I did a test share for the hell of it to my hotmail address and the email went through, but I couldn't sign up. (the email does say you've been invited........if you can't get in try later).

Non gmail invites get sent out immediately, but that doesn't necessarily mean you're able to sign up. Gmail invites are being withheld altogether.
