Got an Xbox One and it's frustrating as hell

It's just not intuitive at first glance. Nothing all that hard to understand. Folks are detailing all kinds of little shortcuts and wondering why people don't magically know that from the jump.

There's something about it I like, but it is a clunky interface.
but thats why they have pins. I have every game that I play and every app pinned. I don't really ever need to go into my downloaded games section. And if I wanna find a movie or game I just search the name

It's sometimes super slow for some reason, especially their clunky store (and when I say super slow, I mean the slowest interface I've ever dealt with in my life). It doesn't seem to affect everyone though.

A factory reset somehow fixed the issue for me but I barely even used the thing so I don't know it ended up being so slow in the first place. Who knows if it'll come back again lol

You missed the golden age of computers!

True.

In my case, the only "where is it?" moment I can possibly think of is when I try to reedem a code (Cortana isn't working for me now, maybe something to do with kinect config ) but that's it. You have literally all your games and social stuff two or three steps ahead...

Friends list just one left press away from main app. Underneath that achievements and messages. Game library and media apps are alphabetized tile icons in the My Games and App section. So yeah -- honestly don't see what's so confusing. I understand the speed complaints though.

The installs take so long because it is downloading any updates as part of the install.

This can't be the sole reason for the horrifically long install times, since I've installed plenty of games on launch day with no updates and it still takes forever.

The core problem has to be something else that hasn't been adressed yet..

I feel like people are remembering the 360 interface wrong. All iterations of it were garbage compared to Xbox One, even the GAF beloved blades.

I've used it recently. My son still plays games on it.

It's snappier. Laid out better. Installs are fast as hell. I can easily skip an install and play a new game. I had more control over my hard drive. Store is better. Etc etc.

I don't think the interface is hard to get around, I just really, really dislike momentary delays in input or delays before a panel appears.

Because games like Halo 5 receive countless updates throughout their life.

In terms of size, don't you think over 100gb is still an insane number, even with content updates?

You should be able to install the multiplayer portion only to save size.

Pins are pretty great, but until lately Games and Apps was practically hidden. It is better now, but in my opnion that should be one of the most visible tiles in the whole interface.

I will never understand posts like these as I love this console and never had any issues with the UI. It might not be as simplistic as the PS4 UI, but that doesn't mean it's hard to use either. If kids can figure it out don't know why anyone else wouldn't be able to. It's all separated in tabs, really easy to go where you need to. Bit it's NeoGAF, so I'm starting to get used to negativity towards the Xbox one.

Also, I'm all digital so never had to do a game install, wouldn't actually know if it is frustrating or not.

Oh that must be it. He's on to us guys.

We should be more subtle in our criticism next time so that we don't get found out and can keep our jobs with Sony/Nintendo/Valve.

It took me ages to get used to the UI. It's not even hard. I don't know what it is but things just weren't where I expected them to be. The store is still mostly a mystery to me.

Well yeah, I don't think anyone would deny that's a large chunk of space. But as we move forward, more and more games are going to be like this, particularly ones with a large MP component.

I actually really like my XB1. In fact, it's getting a heck of a lot more playtime than my PS4 as of late.

The OS and UI still suck.

Installations on Xbox One takes forever, yes. Somehow Microsoft is unable to solve this. Wasn't this one of the first things Phil Spencer wanted to solve?
How about the way the system downloads updates. Downloads at light speed until it hits 70 something percent. Then you have to wait forever for it to hit 100 because it apparently starts installing there. Once it hits 100%, the system restarts and gives you another screen of it applying the update lol. It's like updates with windows, but lasts way longer.

I bought one back in July, and has the OS always been this arduously slow? Even the Wii U's archaic OS is faster than XBO

I don't think I like the interface on any of the consoles.

I like the Vita's best, from the dedicated machines, although those bubbles are awful.

Agree. It's simply tiles and you choose what you want. Definitely not perfect but My Games & Apps is so straightforward/basic that I don't see how anyone could get confused.

I think it's less about confusion and more some don't think it's very good.

I just wanted to watch a freaking DVD, the stupid thing wouldn't let me, it wanted to update no matter what I did. So almost forty min later, I could watch my fucking movie.

I didn't like the interface at first but once you know where everything is it becomes nice enough. Some aspects I like better than the 360, some I don't. Haven't used a PS4 for long enough to compare that but I think I'm one of the dozen people who like the Vita interface.

Maybe it's because I stay informed whenever something new is released (like watching videos and stuff about the UI) as I rememver seeing it I think on Major Nelson's website and knowing how to do everything already the moment I got the update for the new UI and to me it felt like everything was really quick to get to.

My circle of friends that plays on Xbox One has never complain Ed about the UI except in the early days when party chat would sometimes mess up. I only see this kind of stuff online, which is why I never understand.

Yep, I've had mine since the MCC released and it has always been a slow piece of shit. I have no clue how they went from the 360 to this garbage.

i was ps3 but the ps4 is a nightmare. atleast the xbox one has everything on one page. it's not intuitive but atleast it's easy

My only gripe with the PS4 is the fact I can't erase some of the boxes, or hide them. I hate having library and stuff like that on the bar, stuff I never use and just have to skip over. I also don't like the fact that I can't choose the order of the boxes.

I will say though, the Xbox One is better after the most recent update.

My Xbox one is always in sleep mode, haven't seen a single update screen as it is always performed while I am away. Maybe you should learn to do the same...

A coworker of mine who's a designer mind you, actually did bring up that the UI is something that he hates about the XB1. It doesn't make any sense to him at all.

Keep beating that drum. Certainly there must be a concerted effort to discredit the thing you love, and not reasonable, valid, and consistent criticisms by disparate people. They're aligned against you and the brand, but keep strong. Maybe someday they'll be on your side.

This is my #2 complaint about Xbox One that I've had since day one. The stark contrast of install times between XB1 and PS4 is so huge that it baffles me. I still don't know why it takes like 20 times longer to install on XB1 vs PS4's super fast installs.

#1 would be the absolutely broken controller synching, but that's a complaint for a whole other thread..

Isn't There a chip in the Ps4 to help with install Times? MS initial plans with Disc being essentially Codes. Probably wasn't much they could do before the console launched. I assume they could have fixed it with the S though.

This isn't true for me, if I haven't played a game for a while, when I launch the game it will need an update.

I'm confused, why not just update? Doesn't the game need it to play? Honestly don't know as I've never hit "Cancel" on an update in the past.

Because he wants to play as quick as possible and not wait even more just to start? In the end it didn't even let him start a quick one without it which is stupid.

I occasionally do some couch CoOp gaming with a friend at his place.

He's a casual gamer, someone who plays FIFA and whatever the ads tell him to (currently Battleborn and Overwatch).

Watching him battle his white XBone has been a source of amusement for me. I think many people on a specialised gaming forum just don't realise just how badly fucked up that UI and UX is from the standpoint of the average consumer.

Lets just say we both agree that his WiiU is a better fit for him. After I enabled the TV remote feature and sorted his games into folders, that is.

No reason to pile on...everyone knows Gaf is a shill site for every company except Microsoft /s

Not actually that important
The store is the worst part. Wait to go in there snd wanting to browse without knowing what exactly you're looking for... You'll pull your hairs out lol.
Anyway, the sad thing is that the UI was better (less shitty) a couple big updates ago, before the revamp. Although it did miss a lot of perks back then, but it's so fuckin' slow now that I don't feel like using anything other than My Games tab unless I'm using smartglass on my iPad (which has recently become useful since they've added a lot of basic functions which were missing before).

Slow, big, random and blocky instead of fast, organized and compact. I'm surprised they haven't fixed the disc install issues since I got mine a few years ago.

There should be a "thanks Obama" gif about the Xbox one ui, it really isnt that hard to understand, slow Yea maybe, but hard and confusing? Nah

It looks way more complicated than it is.

At the main screen:
Right A for games and apps.
Right trigger for pins.
Left for friends list (then go down for parties, messages, etc.)
Press Start or menu or whatever for Tab to either close an app, pin it, or settings.
For store hit RB till you get there.

Almost everything is about 2 button presses away I feel.

Common complaint, mostly a new user issue. I remember not being able to make heads or tails out of the 360 interface either to start. The Xbox use of large tiles with art and ad space and everything segmented everywhere makes it awkward to use for a while. The sluggishness seems to be a permanent factor, though.
