Got caught a little while back, but judging from this thread Texas is easier on it than Florida. I had the misdemeanor deferred and plan on expunging it later on. Check to see if Florida has something similar to deferral.

Yeah. I think all the new minimums will do is make municipalities and provinces less likely to press charges in some of these cases. They don't want to be on the hook for court costs and jail time. The minimum jail time for possession for purposes of trafficing is dumb. It just guarantees that defendants will go to trial becaause they can't plea out.

The only time I wouldn't drive after smoking is if I was seriously stoned. It doesn't affect my driving. I'm sure it varies for everyone, but I don't think it's the worst thing you can do.
I drive stoned all the time. I'm a regular pot user with a heavy tolerance to weed and I can't say I've ever thought it affected my driving. The only time I've ever been fined was for not wearing a seat-belt and I was completely sober at the time.
That said, if I lit up I would probably wait about 30 minutes to take the edge off before driving.

I ended up doing a program called "Court Options" it was basically a 6 hour drug class full of other potheads lol.
Didn't have to go to trial because I went to the class. The class was about $350 I think. Happened all the way back in October.
It's still on my record because I havnt expunged it. But I think I still can. Idk I try not to think of it much.

Definitely get it expunged, while it's not a huge thing to have on your record, a clean one is best.

That shit is ridiculous.
I can sort of understand giving you a fine, I don't accept pot criminalization, but in the abstract, a money you pay can be used by the state to help society recover from the horrible damaged you caused by smoking some pot.
But coercing you to pay money for a for profit private corporation is fucking bananas.
Unless you're that corporation, in that case, it's a sweet ass way to make money without contributing nothing to society.

Sister in law is a lawyer - she said judges are wayyy less harsh if you fess up to your problem. Judges want to punish those who don't realize they fucked up and just want to defend themselves. Show you are a good person and have a plan for your life and he may give you another shot.
Smoking pot is not 'fucking up'. According to the system it is, but the system is wrong.

I think you have to already be on student aid/loans when you get convicted for this to apply.
This reminds me of the time the local police officer came by when me and my friends were smoking a joint in a field outside of town. He sat down with us, chatted a bit about how we're not causing any problems if we just clean up the trash after ourselves, he leaves us with a garbage bag, and drives off while waving and smiling.
