It's funny how most people's reason for hating the Arcade Fire win is "who the fuck are they anyway?". That doesn't even make sense: just because you don't know an artist, doesn't mean they suck. Perhaps you're missing out on fuck-awesome music.

But I guess that's too reasonable and logical when we're talking about the typical interwebz hyperbolic fanboy warz.

How are people whining they have never heard of Arcade Fire? When you sell out Madison Square Garden two nights in a row, you're not exactly a small band.

Between the Arcade Fire hate (not my thing but hey most nominees aren't so great for them on the win) and the tween Bieber rage it has been one of the most entertaining grammys in a while.

I wonder if these people have even watched the Grammys before. T-Swizzle won last year but the years before that were Robert Plant/Alison Krauss and Herbie Hancock. The most popular pick don't win all the time.

People are sometimes proud about not knowing shit, just see whenever there's some GAF thread about some celebrity people rush to be the first to say "lol who?".

Not to mention the Suburbs debuted at #1 on the Billboard chart and Neon Bible debuted at #2 four years ago.

I know. And I answered with some Nickleback related lyrics. I was hoping you'd see the subtle beauty therein.

Ah, I only have 1 of their albums... (Silver Side up I guess) and i haven't listened to it in ages.

Well, I had never heard of them either, and I listen to pretty much everything.

Not everything, I guess.

Some of my close friends who are into some of this indie stuff apparently knew them though.
This is a joke post, correct?

For some reason, people that are surprised and amazed at Arcade Fire winning this award keep saying they "listen to everything."

No you don't.

This is true. If you even dabble in indie music you know who Arcade Fire is. That's just the truth.

I don't even listen to them and I still know who they are. People are so wrapped up in mainstream music that anyone else that comes into the picture isn't worth their time. It is horrible how people do that to themselves, they are missing out on tons of great music.

Who's the Cee Lo guy? I'm more or less completely oblivious to what pop music is currently popular besides Gaga and Bieber :|

Edit: Found the video for the 'Fuck You' song. Yeah, not my thing at all.

Come on man he was in Goodie Mob like 15 years ago. :(

You probably remember him as the singer from Gnarls Barkley.

It is very strange to hear them being spoken of as if they were some sort of obscure band.

At first it was great knowing Enemema and Gaga did not win but now you people acting as if Arcade Fire is a household name and terrible shocked many did not know about them are really making it suck they won.

You all sound more like you are just jumping on the band wagon than people saying they did not know much about them. The other side I can buy as they are not really mainstream yet in the US but you all acting as if they are I cannot. Just stop.

They are mainstream though, they sold out Madison Square Garden and their music is used all over the place. I guess because their image isn't plastered all over advertising and celebrity news shows that they're not "really" mainstream, but they're certainly not obscure.

That's not really surprising, though. At least in my experience people who claim to "listen to everything" do in fact only listen to mainstream stuff most of the time.

Reminds me of one of my favorite Boogie Nights moment:

Dirk Diggler: "Do you like music? I love music."
"What Kind?"
Dirk: "All kinds. Rock, jazz, classical"

Just the way Mark Wahlberg says it makes it the funniest thing ever.

Glad Muse (favorite performance of the night) and Arcade Fire won. I was pretty pissed at first that I waited 3 and a half hours for them and they played Month of May, but it was redeemed with the Ready to Start encore.

Also liked Dre/Eminem.

The other 3 hours was a waste.

Eww just saw Lady Gaga and her tiresome theatrics talk about needing a new gimmick.

At least Madonna knew when it was time to change it up a bit.

If you've seen the trailer for Where the Wild Things Are, you've heard music by them.

Not to mention that last year they used "Wake Up" for the big NFL sponsored haiti-relief commercial that aired during the Superbowl.

I don't give a fuck about the Grammy's or Arcade Fire but the amount of grief that people seem to be having over Gaga or Eminem not winning album of the year is totally worth it.

What amazes me about Arcade Fire's commercial success is that they get no radio play whatsoever. Props on the win!

They get a good amount of radio play here in Seattle. KEXP has been playing them forever, but some of the commercial station have been playing them for a while now.

I feel lucky enough to have followed AF for some time, and to have been at their 300-capacity show in the woods in Big Sur just a few months ago and gotten to hang out and talk to all of them afterwards. So crazy to see them win. Everyone looked stunned at the upset.

My wife and I saw AF in Seattle back in December 2004 (I think Element and White Man were there, too) play to a packed room of ~400 people or so. Fast forward to his past Fall where we saw them sell out the Key Arena (~9,000 people)... good for them.

I got to see Arcade Fire at the KEXP Annual Yule Benefit in 2004. The event capacity is 575. It was pretty awesome. Check out photos here, http://www.flickr.com/photos/shinyid...7616060657424/

Yep. I remember buying tickets for the show the day they went on sale. It was originally just an Arcade Fire show, but a few weeks later KEXP made it their benefit show and jacked up ticket prices by $10!

Country music needs to go away

that will never happen.

I'm sure people would be thrilled if some my favorite genres went away for good... but they won't .

Maybe country just needs to go back to the underground...

Holy shit the day Arcade Fire wins it is awesome out. It is like 60 degrees out. Been blasting them all day too. Plus new Radiohead this week today wins.

So Arcade Fire won album of the year? I know of them I just don't like their music. Not that I think any of the other albums should have won.

well that's just an extension of the the most popular things are the best stupid argument, which is seen in that tmblr a lot too with people being incredulous that gaga could be beaten by the arcade fire as she has so many number ones and they don't.

Agreed. Whenever the topic of music comes up and someone tells me they like "all kinds of music" or "all kind of music except country lol", they are the top 40 variety. That's when I steer conversation away to something else.
