Hello.

This will be a thread to have some talk about the sales and estimates of the Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo Sport, a driving/racer simulation game for PlayStation 4.

Polyphony Digital Changed from Sell-in to Sell-through reports

The company changed it sales reports recently where they no more release Sell-in sales each title in the franchise choosing to Sell-thought sales for the franchise. The time of the update is not defined so you can it next quarter or just when it reaches a new milestone (like 90 million).
Below you can see the latest report:

With sell-through sales totaling 80.4 million units worldwide*, Gran Turismo has become an international sensation, with strong followings in Europe and North America in particular. It burst onto the video game scene in 1997, steadily evolving alongside the PlayStation® console, and continues to promote the enjoyment of driving to people of all ages all over the world.
*as of May 5, 2018
Actual Sell-through vs old Sell-in comparison

I saw a lot of mistakes made trying to comparing these different type of reports that ended with wrong claims like "GTS sold only 3.3m as of May 5, 2018" when in fact we don't know how much it sold but of course we can draw some conclusions.
Let's see what PD reported:

  • 77.02 Million Sell-in as of September 30, 2017.
  • 80.4 Million Sell-through as of May 5, 2018.
We don't have data of Sell-through for Sep 30, 2017 or Sell-in for May 5, 2018.
We can only guess how much Sell-through for Sep 30, 2017 (or Sell-in for May 5, 2018) and estimate the sales of GTS as of May 5, 2018:

  • 76.5 Million Sell-through as of Sep 30, 2017 = 3.9 Million Sold-through for GTS as of May 5, 2018 (estimate)
  • 76.0 Million Sell-through as of Sep 30, 2017 = 4.4 Million Sold-through for GTS as of May 5, 2018 (estimate)
  • 75.5 Million Sell-through as of Sep 30, 2017 = 4.9 Million Sold-through for GTS as of May 5, 2018 (estimate)
The only think we can say is that GTS sales at that date was way over 3.3m.

Actual Sell-through from some countries

  • Japan: 193.741 units as of End of 2017 (no digital included)
  • UK: 484,933 units as of End of 2017
  • Germany: > 100k as of Oct 31, 2017
  • Germany: > 200k as of Nov 30, 2017
Sell-through vs Profiles

It is a simple idea.
Using the know sales of countries posted above we can compared and draw some estimates using Profiles found here: https://www.gran-turismo.com/br/gtsport/user/.

UK
484,933 units sold as of End of 2017
431,622 profiles as of Jan 24,, 2018

Profiles are lower than sales at that period in UK even if we remove the 24 additional days of profiles.
Perhaps due copies of the game not being used due end of the year holiday/gift.

JP
193.741 units sold as of End of 2017 (no digital included)
260,157 profiles as of Jan 24, 2018

That is a bit hard to compare due the additional 24 days of profiles and the lack of digital sales... if we account digital sales and remove these 24 days of profiles perhaps it could be a really close call between sales and profiles in Japan... even not removing these 24 days of profiles we are looking at max 20% difference between profiles and sales.

Germany
> 200k units sold as of Nov 30, 2017
369,865 profiles as of Jan 24, 2018

Here I can't get any hint because the date period is too longer and > 200k and < 500k is not something I can work with.

Estimates based on profiles

Last time I extracted GTS profile data was Feb 21, 2019.
If we get use the actual profile/sales ratio for the countries above and extrapolate to that date we will have the actual scenario:

UK: ~645k units sold as of Feb 21, 2019 (90% of the profiles)
JP: ~360k units sold as of Feb 21, 2019 (80% of the profiles)

JP and UK profiles accounts for about 16% of the Worldwide profiles as of Feb 21, 2019.
Using that info we can draw a estimate for Worldwide sales:

WW: ~6,281,000 (estimate) as of Feb 21, 2019

Of course that is an estimate and it can be lower or higher but we can start to compare actual sales from countries with profiles to become more accurate with with these estimates.

If you know more data about sales across the world I will be happy to add to the OP.

Overall Profiles as of Feb 21, 2019
  • Total profiles: 7,716,314
  • Total GTS profiles: 7,095,110
  • Total Beta only profiles: 621,204 * Beta profiles turn in GTS profiles after play the final game

Notes
  • All the data were extracted from the API URL https://www.gran-turismo.com/us/api/gt7sp/profile/ (yeap GTS is called GT7SP internally) where I made a basic POST call calling Job 1 that returns 4 data: psn_id, status, profile number and country.
  • I use the most basic call to get the data called Job 1. There are others Jobs that returns more data like hours player, cars owned, races won, etc... all activity data can be extracted.
  • There are others sites with similar data but they just extracted 10% of the base and extrapolated to get the full picture. My data will divert from them a lot because mine is exactly what you have on GTS site without any extrapolation or estimations.
  • Status are divided in two numbers: 1 - Profile that played GTS final game and 2 - Profile that played only the Beta. If a profile with status 2 (Beta only) play the game today then it changed to status 1. I will try to track these Beta only profiles to see if they changed to 1 regularly.
  • Some profiles numbers can't be extracted because the API returns error while the GTS site works fine, it is about 700 profiles that I will try to cover manually in the future.
  • The country is determined by the PSN location (I'm from Brasil but my PSN is US so I'm counted in US numbers).
  • Profiles are PSN users that played the game and not game sales. Used games and family sharing can increase that number even when you had only one copy sold.
  • All the data extracted can be checked in this csv file (comma separated values): https://1drv.ms/u/s!AsRlMSDzwvw8g3OPhbR6SzdjVjqq
  • I will try to update the file and thread at least once per week. That way you will know how many profiles where created in GTS since the last time.

GT always sells really well. It usually has legs until the next one comes out.

That’s better than I thought it was doing. Questions then:

1.) will we see another numbered GT game?
2.) when will we see another GT game of any kind?

I think we will see only one GT game per generation.

GT8, ala GTS2, will launch on PS5.

GTS is a numbered GT game it is called GT7SP.

I wonder when new GT will be released ?
PS5 probably after the first year.

It seems like you really went the extra mile here, but you're estimate is indeed a loose one.

You're using a small sample to extrapolate from. I'm not saying your claims are dubious, but after reading your comments on this topic in another thread, and how misleading they were. I have no doubt that you are trying to get that GTS sales number as high as possible.

All that being said... GT usually has pretty good legs as a series, but after the initial reception the game got at release, along with its npd rankings... I have a hard time believing that GTS has sold that we'll over the last 7-8 months.

Edit: To clarify. That's not to say that I'm claiming it only sold 3.3 million either as mentioned in your OP. I would think that the actual number is somewhere between the two.

I've skipped this one but i'm willing to give this series another chance IF GT7 will be playable offline and have a solid SP campaign on day 1.

I'm guessing they are working on GT7 which is cross-gen.
I doubt this. GTS has become a forward compatible service game at the moment. It will likely continue to offer free cars and tracks through updates and makes its cash from MTX. A new GT will probably release well into PS5s lifetime once PS4 is out of the picture

I already had all the data since beginning of this year... so I just wrote the thread... not a big work to be fair.

And the numbers can be even better than my estimates... I just choose to be conservative.

It was already well over 3.3m when they announced 80.4m for the franchise.

I play GTS from time to time. A friend gave it to me as a gift. I would not have brought the game with my money. Sure the game is better which each update but not enough to hook me up. I played GT5 every day until GT6 came out and with GT6 until i sold my PS3 and got the PS4. If GT7 comes out will be for PS5 knowing PD they take forever to release a game.

It's a tired franchise that slowly but surely has lost everything that made it world class. I first bought into the PlayStation eco system solely for the GT series. Sad, but that's life.

5.5 million is good but expected a lot more like 7+
estimates from My PS4 says it sold 7,5M
Wasn't GTS over 5.5 million players earlier this year according to PD.......With all the sales we've had since July including black Friday, I would suggest that GTS sales or players are much higher......

There's also this report from GT Planet two days ago....

https://www.gtplanet.net/gt-sport-has-around-7-5-million-players-according-to-my-ps4-life-feature/

Considering it still only supports online saving, that's a lot of paperweight.
Surprised that it sold as much as it has though. But then again, it's (or seems like it's) regurarly on sale.

I used to be such a insufferable GT fanboy. Times surely have changed. The 5th and 6th installment burned me badly and GTS demolished whatever slight fondness I had left for the series.

The 7.5m data is doing using some bad round from trophies... the actual data is 6,235,947 as yesterday.

The 5.5m in June or July is the same data I have but they combined Beta profiles that can't get trophies... at that time it really have over 5.5m profiles.

Yesterday with beta profiles we have 6,872,631... an increase near 1.3m of GTS profiles (because it is not possible to create Beta profiles anymore... and Beta become GTS after the same profile plays the final game... beta profiles are all below the first 1.5m profiles).

Weird because GTS is the best GT was ever but I see a lot of gamers having a misunderstanding before play it... even my longer hater GTS friends at release after play it felt in love... there is a even funny case in the other forum with a Destiny buddy.

This thread is just damage control for you're profile=sales nonsense from the Forza GT thread:

I don’t understand driving games at all.

I bought GTS and a wheel. I got bored. Forza Horizon interests me more, but not enough.

~5 million is my estimate. It doesn't seem like a profitable game for Sony considering how much work they put into the GT ip. they have offices all around the world to keep connections with car makers. they need to do something vastly big for the next GT

I haven't played since GT5. If I pick up GTS, how likely am I to be happy with it? I used to love GT (GT 1-3 were great, 5 was alright). I've looked at GTS a couple of times and yearned for another great GT game.

Yep, the online saving was a bad idea. What can go wrong? Well, for me, loading up the game one night and *boom* my garage is gone for no reason. Polyphony Digital has no official support team in place to assist, which still boggles my mind considering its competition has official support.

PS Support folks are useless, can't do anything with Polyphony Digital's server issues. So, you lose your garage, even if you reload your previous save, "too bad".

Of course this game will sell, when you wait 4+ years for Kaz to release a bare-bones e-sports game, folks will still buy it since it's "Gran Turismo" as did I. With the lackluster reviews, he shoehorned in single player events and while content each month is fine, it still isn't a full fledged GT7.

GT Sport is an excellent driving game and a very competent online sport, a game with decent graphics and wonderful lighting at 60fps. It is very lacking as a single player experience, however, and earning the exact cars you want is somewhat grindy, though getting competitive cars in each class is very achievable for all players as rewards for progress in the single player races. I recommend watching some YouTubers like SuperGT to get a feel for it if you are curious.

I don't think GT was ever in better shape.

I think people have a wrong ideia about GTS but it is changing everything in the genre... the big press is already impressed and posting articles about what it is doing.

So salty that several people called you out on it.

It's cool man, PP will tell us the sales when they feel like revealing them.
A new story nobody called anything... can you post anything not made up?

And PP did not even exists lol

BTW are you bitter yet about the Detroid good sales? I guess it is time to accept already... or better forget that just post some source for your made up all these NPD TOP threads where the data didn't match the reality.

.
You're the only one making things up with your profile desperation.

However, if you feel you need to make another 3 posts in a row to justify your fiction go ahead.

Already linked the thread above, you really don't have anything. PP will release the real numbers, that aren't your made up ones since you have NO sales and are only using profiles, when they FEEL like they hit a milestone that they would like to share. Nothing to it.

The fact you made a new thread to continue this is silly. I'm not even sure why you did it, GTS not selling as well as other GT games doesn't mean Forza sold more so your obsession here is very strange.

Anyway, I'll leave you to your thread, just letting posters know to look at the above link, for Ethomaz seems to belief profiles=sales figures for some reason. Don't fall for the fake profile numbers. Moving on.

edit: He also does a lot of slick shit like editing his posts later on so you don't respond to a point he pulled out his ass long after the conversation ended. Also those NPD numbers came from NPD and Gaf and you were called out for using Matt NPD's as unit sales when his own charts say revenue, you're an idiot, shut up. That kind of editing can get you reported.

The franchise has really gone downhill since GT4.

it didn't. it just didn't evolve. it sells more than forza. tho forza budget is smaller much smaller. they churned out like 4 forza games between GT6 and GT sport.

and its a better game. the problem is that polyphony is headed by a racing car guy yamauchi. and he just wants to make true racing simulators

I can see GT7 being a good game if the consoles can support very high stable framerate and 4k native graphics. and having more modes and release content.

racing games are more or less dead.

and its a better game. the problem is that polyphony is headed by a racing car guy yamauchi. and he just wants to make true racing simulators

I can see GT7 being a good game if the consoles can support very high stable framerate and 4k native graphics. and having more modes and release content.

racing games are more or less dead.
Horizon 3 has 10 million players, while GT Sport has 5 million players. So no, Horizon is now a bigger series than GT.

Kaz has had his head up his ass for the last 12 years, and as a result Forza, and even Project Cars has greatly surpassed them.

Say with a straight face that GT has a bigger budget than Horizon 4. If youre saying this because GT has better car models, thats only because PD take more timeto make each car, and T10 churn them out rapidly. Its a tradeoff for better or for worse. At best they probably have equal budget.

Weird because GTS is the best GT was ever but I see a lot of gamers having a misunderstanding before play it... even my longer hater GTS friends at release after play it felt in love... there is a even funny case in the other forum with a Destiny buddy.
I can understand the appeal of GTS if you're big into online racing but I just don't care at all or have the time for that. The tacked on GT League is where I would have been spending my time if it didn't suck (ie; followed the GT6's 'chasing the rabbit' format) and online saving wasn't a thing.

I just might have looked past most of the game's flaws if it wasn't for this stupid (and typical) decision coming from PD. I'll never ever rely on neither their servers, support or my own connectivity for that matter.

Thanks for investing the time into getting these estimates for us.

By my reckoning, that puts Sport ahead of the Prologues, GT6, as well as the PSP version? Pretty nice for a late-gen "spinoff" (i.e. non-numbered) entry.

Agreed on both accounts. I see online racing as additive or separate from the single player. The loss of offline saves is also just reinforcing to people that aren’t interested in the first place.

I would actually love if they split the single / local multi into one series e.g., the numbered series with all the cars. Then have the online component into a gts series. This way they could get the budget to focus on the aspects that each need and they could work with each other.

Imagine this year if a GT7 launched with 300ish cars split between new and old and had a focus on single player and local multi and the carpg upgrades of old. However there would be no multiplayer online.

Then in two years GTS2021 release with all the online and a new roster of cars.

If own both games you get access to each games cars. So GT7 players could keep playing offline but with all the GTS2021 cars. Likewise GTS2021 players could race online with GT7 cars if they owned both.

For anti cheating or whatever have the GT7 saves be local but have the GTS saves online and separate from each other.

I know its not the font of all knowledge but Wikipedia has the sales totalled at 3.3 million.

Quite a discrepancy from your estimate.

3.3m is a bad guesstimate using the last sell-though minus the previous sell-in... do it is actually over 3.3m sold.

And the last sell-though is near a year ago.

I detailed that on Actual Sell-through vs old Sell-in comparison section.
