Gravity Rush 2 online services to end on January 19

I guess Gravity Rush series will join Puppeteer as great first party games that Sony doesn't care about.

This is GAF's 9th most anticipated game in 2017. Where are those people who voted for this game? Feels like nobody bought it.
January was a bad month to be a Japanese game that wasn't part of a long running franchise. Sony should know, those other games were on their own platform.

This is simultaneously sad and angering.

Is the excuse really "Well it didn't sell THAT much" ? Like for real, does every game now need CoD numbers to justify even having some basic online functionalities run for longer than barely a year ? A first party game nonetheless !

And I know that this game doesn't "require" ps+ but I do wonder. Wouldn't avoiding that kind of situation be one the key reason ps+ became required for a lot of games in the first place ? For all the boasting Sony does about its numbers, console solds and ps+ subscribers and such, the service itself didn't get any better. Downtimes and hacks are still frequent enough to warrant an "again ?" from the public when it happens. The line up has been measly overall. Hell stuff like ps1 games aren't availale still, and the quality of certain games getting on/using the platform have been really low. And now we got games who get their features shut down extremely early, despite the mountain of money the service gets them.

I am more than a little frustrated by this since it shows little support and a scary future for smaller games who have or would like to use such features

This is ridiculous. I don't own the game but shutting down a key component of the game only a year into release is unacceptable. Fuck you Sony, it's pretty much guaranteed now that I'm going to let my PS+ subscription lapse.
It's not a key component. Not even close.

Like I don't remember PS+ stating that all proceeds will go to all games that has an online proponent regardless if it's delisted or not. I think Sony is within their rights to remove a server if the cost doesn't meet the usage.

I mean, they're within their rights to shut any server without even stating a reason. But their network is generally regarded as "not the best" and I think it'd be worth the server costs to avoid "Sony shuts down online component for year old game" headlines. It only adds to their reputation in this regard.

Super shitty and exactly why I didn't like all the online stuff when the game came out. Even if they did keep the servers up who's going to be online a year from release using your treasure hunt pictures and shit to get you the points? The whole idea behind it was half baked. The online content was all pretty bleh, I won't miss that, it's that there's probably not going to be any way to get the stuff locked behind it once it's shut down.

Any word about the mining rifts and special monsters? I can't remember if those were tied to online or not, I remember they were timed so it seemed like it.

Locoroco is still very much alive. It might not be getting substantial new entries, but they still keep re-releasing different versions of it.

I mean... if there's not enough people using the service then how is it a bad call? They wouldn't shut it down if it was active.

It sounds like a shit online implementation anyway. Hopefully they patch it right out the game when the servers shut down so there's no evidence it ever existed.

I will never understand why consumers make excuses like this for corporations.

How about i bought the fucking game and sony charges me for online every year.

I played the first one and never finished it. I think when that happens people are just really unlikely to actually buy a direct sequel. Especially because I never heard what GD2 does differently than the first.

Well said.

If psn was free it might make sense, now that they charge and are giving away shittier games then ever there is no excuse.

this is what happens to experimental japanese games in the current day. people don't buy them.

Its a shame because we need more reasons for games like this to exist. not that sony itself is helping much. seriously, making gravity rush remastered an amazon exclusive was just a stupid move

So after all the fuss and drama, it is not the graphics (or hardware) that's holding the Gravity Rush franchise back isn't it? GR was always a niche title, it didn't need the bloated graphics, it actuallly benefited from the original stylized world which helps keeping the production cost down.

The original GR2 Vita plan died for nothing lol.
Well the Vita is dead now so what the hell...... ;/

This sucks but GR2's online doesn't require PS+ and I don't think MGSV: TPP is a shitty game regardless of Konami's treatment of Kojima.

What's.... experimental about it? It's a direct sequel to a Vita game which presumably sold well enough for them to feel a sequel and a remaster was worthwhile. Sounds like the game failed to sell on its own merits as a sequel.

I would say it probably had more to do with its barebones marketing and the very very bad timing of its release.

Like, I had played the Remaster and planned to get GR2 as well, but the first half of 2017 was so crazy that I just got around to buying/playing GR2 a couple of weeks ago. It's ironic that they delayed the game to 2017, so they wouldn't have to compete with XV and TLG, but in the end they just ended up in a way worse spot.

Yeah the timing sucked, no doubt, and I remember it actually had solid marketing (for the type of title it is) leading up to the original Dec (?) release, only to get delayed and losing all momentum.

...so you pay money every year.

I bet you'd rather they use the money to maintain servers for populated games, giving a great experience to the majority, rather than keeping servers for dead games alive?

They need to use the money effectively. Just because you pay doesn't mean they can maintain everything.

And part of the fee goes to securing your PS+ titles.

I think it’s only decent marketing was in Japan which is where it also sold pretty well.

Naaah the graphics in GR2 are a good improvement. Everything looks vibrant and nice compared to the first one. GR2 on PS4 was a good call IMO.

Sucks about this news, no reason to shut it down. It doubt it costs them much, theres no online gameplay.

Gravity Rush 2 didn't just boast stunning visuals, it also had an incredibly ambitious scope that I doubt could have been achieved on the Vita.

Well good graphics always looks better(?), but whether it really benefits the franchise or gameplay as a whole is another story. In this case if they spent the resources on other interesting elements instead perhaps result would be different; It's all hypothetical of course.

I always felt that GR relies on a single gimmick that is flying through the world by gyro control, it worked well in a smaller game but once you bloated it up in PS4 proportion it just won't be enough.

IMO the graphics in original GR never felt lacking given the game's scope. We must have played much better looking game after the original GR yet I still vividly remember walking through the sunset city in the first Ch.

Would be nice if they released a patch so that all those costumes and other items get obtainable wirhout the online stuff.
But it seens like it's to late for that.
I have most of it.
And the treasure hunts were pretty fun.
Shame that the game won't be the same if I want to do another playthrough.
But that was forseeable with online stuff.

Every time I hear more news about Sony it makes them seem more and more like a bunch of crooks.

I disrespect them as a platform holder as much as I did Microsoft during the Xbone reveal.

Just to give a rough ballpark in terms of sales, the games world rankings for dusty tokens collected lists 223,749 total players (you must have collected at least 1 to be included).

Never understood the love for Puppeteer. Had a neat artstyle but holy hell was it boring to play.

This. Forced myself to finish it but it's most likely the most boring game I've played. Style over substance and I didn't even like the style.

Gravity Rush on the other hand is great, haven't played the second one though so this news sucks.

Yep. Not experimental at all. It's a good game filled bad design choices. It's actually quite lucky we got a sequel at all. I can't fault Sony if the player base is virtually nothing to keep online services going. We all knew there wasn't going to be a Gravity Rush 3. I'm glad we got this flawed but cool game.

Yeah, I don't even know if the first sold well; it just seems like something nice they let Japan do since the idea is cool. While the graphics in GR2 were nice, it was not some gigantic AAA game as Uncharted or Horizon or Killzone are, so it likely cost a lot less to make, making it easier to greenlight.

The problem I had with GR1's graphics, though I did like them, was the restrictions the hardware created. For example, when you reach that first large city in GR2, you can see the skies opening up, flying ships and buildings, etc., and it feels large and open. That helps when you're soaring through the atmosphere to get to the rich town above you as you really feel like you're traveling seamlessly between areas. In GR1, the skies felt more restrictive and boxed in, so despite defying gravity, there was only so high you could go or even feel you could go.
