Great DOS games

Forgive me but I this pic is going to be really big.
I cannot believe this thread has gone for four pages without mentioning Star Control II looked on page 2

See all those dots? those are SYSTEMS that you can visit, with smaller planets inside in which you mine confront enemies and upgrade your ship. It truly is an unbelievable game way ahead of it's time. It is a truly epic and unappreciated game.

The windows port (Ur Quan Masters) is available open source at http://sc2.sourceforge.net/
Just google for the DOS version, it's free

Nice picture :) But you're wrong about no one mentioning it. :)

Edit: And the VA in the windows/mac/linux port makes it so much better than the DOS version.

I've hooked an old Amiga CRT (1084S) to the s-video output on my video card and it works amazingly well for these low-res games, especially the 2D ones.

This was was/is ridicously awesome in every way.

Oh, has anyone here ever played Supaplex? Excellent puzzle / strategy game. :) Many impossibly hard levels, at least to me as a kid.

O. M. G. I've been looking for this game for years! I've been on google, forums etc. I used to love this game way back when I was a kid and now I found it again. Thank you very much. I always though it was like duplex or suplex lol that's why it never came up on the searches. Thanks again :D :D :D

I don't know, probably. I never did. I always got stuck on some level. It was a really hard game.

Seriously, you cannot do better than X-Wing for DOS. This is one of my favorite all-time games.

The music is amazing, and I accidentally stumbled over a feature in DOS Box that allowed me to play the midi music of the game with the midi drivers on my mac, instead of the original DOS midi sounds. The result was a much more realistic sound and the music REALLY came to life all over again.

I don't remember how I did this, but you might try fiddling with the options a bit. It's well worth it!

Where the hell do you get them?
LucasArts games

You can get a fair few of them from the UK - Sam and Max, Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle and The Dig are all available as part of the Lucas Classics line (no such luck for games from Maniac Mansion to Fate of Atlantis, although you can probably find a second hand copy of the first two Monkey Islands relatively easily) which were republished pretty recently.

EA/Bullfrog games (Theme Hospital, Theme Park, Syndicate series)

Theme Hospital's available in the UK still - it's one of the most consistent selling games over here, I think. No idea about the others, though, I think only the Win95 and onwards games (like Dungeon Keeper 2) are out still.

Undeniably the best series of Pinball games ever made (and still is today):

s_r_pp_timeshock_table_big.jpg

Pro Pinball:
- The Web
- Timeshock! (shown above, and yes those graphics ran in DOS)
- Fantastic Journey
- Big Race USA

They look better than just about any pinball game to date, run at 1600x1200, have better physics than most pinball games released today and have 100s of megs of animation, The games can take months, if not years to master.

There's some pretty hardcore reviews here, of which the above games take spots #1, 2, 3, & 6 (of 70).

I like Street Rod 1 and 2 :)

I think i had some problems running both games properly (or maybe it was just on of the games, unfortuantely i dont remember) in DOSBox though. I dont know if the problem was in DOSBox itself or if the version of the games i had wasnt working properly or something.

I see that DOSBox is upto version 0.72 now, i think i tried them on version 0.70 of DOSBox, so maybe Street Rod 1 and/or 2 will run more properly in the latest version of DOSBox, if DOSBox was the reason why Street Rod 1 and/or 2 wasnt running properly for me that is.

Yep yep. Pro Pinball fucking rocks. Pure Pinball that went up on gog a week or so ago is actually pretty good also, had never played it before. Damn, I used to play a lot of pinball games. Heh. Mostly Balls of Steel, Pinball Fantasies and Psycho Pinball. and the demo for Pro Pinball The Web.

Holy shit... just remembered Abuse. Can't find screenies etc. at work, but oh man. Platformer + mouse aiming = awesome. Atmosphere by the bucketload, too.

The Legacy:Realms of Terror was a cool RPG/Survival Horror game loved it back in the day.

Alone in the dark kicked started a great love of Horror games for me

And Realms of the Haunting was really quite good at blending fps and Survial Horror/sierra style adventure game.

well, the best of them were not under dos anyway
online mush'es/muse'es under telnet

ok, gaf, help me out with this one: one of the very few awesome dos games that i cannot remember the name of.

it was a fantasy RPG, with a very elaborate inventory system (beautifully drawn items - think diablo quality) and generally very AD&D-canonic, first-person, room-based traversing.

the game starts with a desert location, and a pharaoh tomb theme - sands, pyramids, mummies.

Though DOS isn't really the way to go, you can play it that way. Ported to your native OS is much better, you can download it with all the voice paks and high quality music/remixes here.

Did I mention it's completely free? You have no excuse for not enjoying this awesome game!
