GT5 News - Nurburgring update (pre-E3 edition)

Sony's German product manager.
He kept dodging questions and/or giving answers everybody already knows.

Crappy interview. Either you interview someone from Polyphony, or you don't do an interview at all.
These marketing people won't answer anything.
He knows the release schedule though - so if he says a release date announcement is coming in days or weeks - shouldn't we believe him?

He said "days" but it looked like he misspoke. Then he said weeks. Which can be anything.
He's only expecting (hoping?) there will be news at E3.

They also asked if the game "broke the 1000 car barrier".
His answer: There will be at least 950, we'll know in the coming weeks if there will be more.

I'd imagine the pre-E3 event would have revealed a release date to the press, so we'll get to hear it June.

Is Sony even going to have a pre-E3 event this year? I think it was SamBishop that said that GDC was the only thing that Sony was going to do this year leading up to E3.

Weeks means he's pointing at E3. Ie. not months.

I have no idea, I know they did last year. Maybe all the leaks have held them back this year?

Has there been that many leaks this year? What have been the leaks? Doesn't feel like there's been many leaks to me compared to last year (which was horrible, I felt for Sony even though they still had a great showing). I feel like I don't really know what Sony is up to for E3 this year. Or MS. I know some stuff that is going to be there, but not because it was leaked.

I actually hate it when people break their NDAs and leak shit. It spoils the fun.

i wont be that sure - he is only a product guy for germany, not europe in other words SCEE.

did anybody notice on the start of the video that the rear bumper is moving from damage..?

While the bumper appears to be detachable, I'm not sure its deformable

Still, good eye :D
LTTP?

It was spotted earlier, might even be a SSX gif floating around here somewhere.

I've pretty much come terms with the fact that the damage in this game, just like any other game, will be purely a cosmetic feature that probably won't live up to the hype of - "The Real Damage Simulator."

GT6? Maybe, but there ain't enough time right now to put that shit in, or else we'd be waiting till 2016.

The damage in the video is the same that was initially shown at gamescom. In other words, it's a damage system that's nearly a year old.

Then why the fuck has Kaz been spewing out shitty "% complete" numbers for months now, when the game clearly is faaar from finished? :lol Appeasing to the investors huh?

Me too. I've even given up on deformation being included.

Have you considered that they simply aren't showing the improved system yet? They were showing off the same Nurburgring that they'd had for years now until the 24hours of Nurburgring. There wasn't even any indication that they were upgrading it before that.

This.

"A source close to Sony has confirmed to MCV that the reason behind the more recent of Gran Turismo 5's delays is the implementation of both 3D and Move compatibility.

The news helps to explain the somewhat bewildering claim made by the game's chief designer Kazunori Yamauchi earlier this month that the game, which has been in development for several years, is still only 90 per cent complete.

Rumours of both Move and 3D compatibility first arose in April when Yamauchi confessed that Polyphony Digital is "always attuned to new technologies", adding that "if there are display devices or peripherals that seem interesting, I'm sure we'll work to support them".

The exact timeframe of Sony's plans for Gran Turismo 5 remains a mystery, but an E3 reveal is certainly not out of the question.

UPDATE: Sony has provided MCV with the following statement - "We will be announcing further details of Gran Turismo 5 in June in Los Angeles during the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Until that time we cannot comment on rumour or speculation."

Might be a good reason to try out Move after all.

i would rather not have move and 3D and just be able to play the game now already for 2 months

Head tracking.

The good thing about the game being "delayed" for those reasons is that it leaves the overwhelming majority of employees (artists of various types) plenty of extra time to keep adding more tracks and cars.

It could be used for the showroom or picture taking/manipulation. Move demo with the camcorder could be applied to this pretty well. Could be used to help with car customization and livery editor if there is one in there. The head tracking with Eye I think is part of the Move SDK. Could have motion controlled menus.

So don't necessarily think during driving using the wand. I imagine lots of games might have minigames that are Move oriented, while the main gameplay is not. The Toy Story game clearly is doing this. And I don't see why other games could not.

Of course that crossed my mind. The problem with this approach is it instills a bad first impression in many viewers. I've seen lots of people laugh off the damage they've shown so far, and it's not doing them any favors to keep showing the loose bumper/wobbling door all the time. They need to start showing off the improved stuff (if there's any) to wash away the unfinished stuff they've been showing until now.

(and of course, please note I'm not as sensitive as other gamers on the Internet, since I actually don't mind the current damage model.)

They seem to be holding everything back for E3. If that comes and goes without an improved damage model then it's unlikely that there is actually one. But Kaz mentioned last year that they had an entire wing of PD dedicated to damage and the people in that part of the studio were apparently obsessed with the modeling. So we'll see in a few weeks.

I sure hope so, though I won't be too bummed if a thorough damage model won't be implemented. But it's obvious that there'll be repercussions if they don't show anything good on that front, since gamers sure love to total their cars.

There will be outrage from a portion of gamers, but when it comes to it, it will still sell millions.

The thing is we wont get Burnout crashes visually , and as long as we get a sufficiently visual crumple and a solid effect of the crash on the handling (wobbling wheels, broken suspensions, steering and breaking issues) it will be sufficient for the vast majority.

Only time will tell. Kaz has discussed stuff that they currently had (like your car stopping after a single crash) but we haven't seen it. In terms of mechanical damage all we've seen is the car pulling to a direction and your car not being able to get out of third gear if you crash too much. There's a ton of stuff that we haven't seen yet outside of the damage such as the GT Mode or detailed info on the online mode.

It will be interesting to play the game with the Move, maybe they will have an option to use the Playstation Move as the steering wheel like Wii Remote style. Cant figure out with the Move Subcontroller would be used for, I guess shifting gears?

I can't see a move implementation being any good. I hate that Sony is trying to shoehorn everything into this game. At least 3D would add to the experience.

edit: And as far as cosmetic damage goes, put me in the camp that always couldn't have cared less about it being in the game. If what we've seen turns out to be all there is to the damage system, I would've rather them put that work into other areas. I never understood all the clamour for a cosmetic damage system in GT. Anything that adds to the driving simulation (i.e. mechanical damage) is a great addition. Manufacturers will always limit what can be done to their cars in terms of visual damage anyway, so true to life crashes that everyone is always hoping for in these games is far far far away, if it ever comes at all.

So a christmas release is the most likely thing to happen right ..?
with socom 4 coming out in august or something that is a pretty good line up.

anybody know if they have those GT5 pods at mercedes shops in holland as well..?

also any word of having the option to disable the hud

come on it cant come out in march 2011 cuz most likely killzone 3 will come out than.
christmas is a way better time to come out or november
