GTA 5 Ships 70 Million Copies

With that kind of success they could have afforded to make the game perfect. But on the other hand there's no financial incentive for them to do so.

Facts like this demonstrate the powah of interactive entertainment when you deliver a gaming experience that delivers in spades and then some. Consumers will devour it like GTAV. Totally justifies my pastime as a gamer and not in any way indicative that i just cant stop playing games as great as this one. Now R* make RDR2 fucking great!

Thanks.

Within the 70 millions are digital copies accounted? Or are we talking about maybe 80 millions or more?

Digital copies are included in the 70m number, but I think they would be higher than 10m.

Steam alone is 5.48m, then add in non Steam PC copies and everyone buying digitally on 360, PS3, XBone and PS4.

I think digital would be closer to 15-20m.

Let's hope these big sales numbers promise more intricately crafted single player adventure games in an open world. Keep letting GTA:O fund Bully 2 and a new Manhunt game!

Just bought it last week on Steam. Was waiting forever for a 50% or more price drop on Steam, but it just wouldn't happen. No wonder with the game still being consistently in the Top 10. So I bit at -40% to have something to throw at my new GPU.

While I'm still not 100% sold on the gameplay, the satirical story is great, and the liveliness of the open world is the best ever achieved, even topping all Open-World RPGs. An incredible achievement in World Building, cannot imagine how many centuries of man hours went into building this game. And it looks great in 4K at max details.

So you can make money on good AAA games. Gta5 is probably my 3rd fave gta but it's quite good. Gta online was meh but you can see the potential there and lots love it

Insane numbers. Who are buying all these copies? I dont know anybody who play or talk about the game. But congrats to Rockstar and Take-to I guess.

70 million? Does anyone have a graph of top 10 sales for comparison, or any comparison to best selling in history.

It only trails Minecraft, Tetris, and Wii Sports. Which says a lot about how successful it is since the only games that have done better are either cheap or were packed in with a console for a majority of its lifespan.

It's only behind Wii Sports, which was bundled with almost every Wii (and it's going to pass Wii Sports probably within the next year anyways) and Minecraft, which is on a fuckzillion different platforms and sells for way less than GTA V did.

GTA V is really in a league of its own. The next game on the list is the original Super Mario Bros at like 40 million. It's crazy.

There was an interview awhile back with TakeTwo CEO Zelnick where he said he never even visits the R* floors of their shared Manhattan office. Back when GTA IV was coming out and EA was eyeing T2 a journalist asked the Houser brothers if they were worried. They said something along the lines of "nah, any company buying us would know better than to intrude and call shots."

R* is the James Cameron of the industry. They have fuck you money and power. Deservingly so.

GTA V videos on YouTube are insanely popular, I imagine there are ton of teens and pre teens still buying the game.

Even counting the people who watch videos and buy based on that...it still seems really high for a game which is essentially over 3 years old. I honestly didn't think GTAO was still attracting so many new players, I figured most who were interested in it, played it back in the day and moved on.

The game is a masterpiece, im constantly impressed with how much detail they packed into GTA5. I bought it last month hoping to pick it up cheap, nope, still £50 brand new. (digital)

Fully deserves, R* are in a league of their own, no one comes as close to the ambition and execution of games.

Still haven't played it was never a GTA kinda guy.

I've never played any GTA and this doesn't even get my attention, much like Game of Thrones.

I know it's popular/good but my Interest-o meter is like:

They sold so many because people bought it multiple times due to staggered release.

ps3 > ps4 > pc

Smart from a business perspective but super poor way to treat your customers.

you're overestimating double/triple dippers.

Giving customers the chance to buy a game they like in another platform is treating them poorly? lol

Nobody is forcing them to buy it, they do because they want to.

No, but it's a little manipulative to release them in sequential order of improvements the games each get. Ultimately the consumer's fault, but still

Back in the day there was a point at where it felt like Rockstar was making GTA mostly to finance the weird games they wanted to make but knew wouldn't sell great...

I feel they owe us one of those games by now... make it about a Curling team, VR drug trips in the 60s or a porn producer sim... that kind.
(on the same note... I should play some Gwent)

I just hopped aboard with the Steam sale last week, I'm amazed by the game so far, it might be the most impressive combination of visuals / performance I've seen in years, can't believe my rig is maxing it at 60fps. The reflections, the lightning, the water, the draw distance...the game is a real technical showpiece.
Not to mention the little details they don't leave out. Flip flops actually flip flopping like they would in real life, going in water and only part of clothes that touches water gets wet etc.... Ign did some article years back like "100 little details in GTA V" and some of the things i read were insane.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
I still need to buy GTAV... And I will the moment it gets a sale discount higher than 40%

Well, they will have one more from me eventually. Going to pick it up when I have some more time. Or possibly when it is on sale so I can see the title in my library and never play it...
