From TouchArcade:
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars [App Store] was quietly released into the App Store this evening. Chinatown Wars for the iPhone seems to lie somewhere in between the DS and PSP versions in regards to graphical quality, but as far as pure GTA gameplay, everything so far seems intact.

Kinda want.

Will buy if the controls are solid.
They seem good to me. Only complaint is that I keep hitting that button with the hand on it when driving instead of the brake, but there's probably a way to customize the controls in the options. If there isn't I'm sure I'll get used to it.

Just watched the video. Visually it looks spectacular for the iPhone, but the controls seem kinda eh. Will pass on this unless there is a sale. I still have the DS version that I haven't played yet. :lol

at first i was like ZOMG WANT

then i saw how it controlled, and now i shall wait D:
how else would an entirely touch-screen controlled version of this control without on-screen buttons?

seriously, it plays fine.

What happened to the cool cel-shaded look of the DS version?

Dropped to spruce up for the PSP port. Then downgraded for the iPhone. :lol

Kinda cool that they ported it to all three "gaming handhelds" but I do worry about the controls (ick, touchscreen) for the iPhone port.

$10 is what I would pay for either the DS or PSP versions. It's $19 CAD new on Amazon for the DS or $30 CAD through PSN for the PSP but I'm a CAG.

You know, seriously, the iPhone is taking away from Nintendo's stronghold on the handheld market. It's easy to dismiss, but that's when it can take larger bites.

Even though the games available have mostly different audiences, the iPhone should not be dismissed. There's something to be said for games that are ALWAYS on you.

I never bought the DS version. Man, I was thinking about it, since I don't really want to finish Spirit Tracks anymore. For got an iPhone version was out there. Thing is, I'm not sure I'd even like GTA on a handheld.

BTW, there's a setting in the options for a virtual analog stick while driving and one for switching accelerate/brake. Turned both on and it's much better now.

I wasn't dimissing the iPhone. It has it's place. But, for me (an avid hater of touchscreen/motion controls), it doesn't have a place in games.

Again: Cool that the iPhone got it. But ick, touch-screen controls. The DS/PSP version do buttons, so it's kinda weird to see on-screen buttons for it. (Not like the iPhone can do anything else for that, though)

I didn't to imply you did. I was trying to say that the it's amazing that the iPhone really is a true handheld gaming device holding it's own and that Nintendo (and the public) shouldn't dismiss it as a fad. Soon enough the iPod/iPhone will be eating into sales...

I was basically agreeing with you, sorry for the confusion. i just quoted you because you were mentioning the iPhone in the same breath as the DS and PSP - and rightly so.

That certainly came out of nowhere.

So this game went from being $40 on the DS to $10 on the iPhone in like ten months.

Bomba?

Less a "bomba" than a "hey this game isn't going to sell much more where it is, let's get as much as we can while the word is still fresh"

So actually yea, bomba.

Anyone with a 3G that can comment on the framerate? I get the sense most 3D games are now being developed with the 3GS in mind and as such am hesitant to bite on 3D titles.

Anyone try this on an iPhone EDGE? It's all I got. :(

You know what's pretty interesting?

I think if this version performs better than the PSP and DS versions, it might show that the iPhone could be a better platform to publishers than the handhelds one.

Or it might show that altering you graphics was a good idea to begin with!

I had hoped this might be a test for the high end iPhone market but considering the DS did very ho-hum and the PSP version bombed they probably didn't have high sales expectations. Either Rockstar didn't have faith in the game's selling ability, the iDevice audience to buy a full priced handheld game, or both. Impossible to tell.

This relates to my last point. All the similarities we could have drawn got thrown out the window because the release is delayed, priced differently and the other versions didn't do so well.

I cannot imagine playing this on an iPhone during some of the game's more challenging missions. Those required some precision that a thumb on an iPhone won't be able to duplicate.

Have you played many games on an iPhone? I used to despise a virtual d-pad, and while still not as good as a real one, I've become fairly proficient.

THe general assumption is that you can't charge more than $10 for iPhone games, regardless of the game. Really, even $10 is pushing it.

If publishers could juice the pricing up to $15 or $20, I think we'd see DS and PSP games getting ported in droves.

CTW doesn't change or challenge that. So I guess that will continue to be true but had it had a successful run I wonder if they would have tried? Really if iPhone wants to compete it'll need to have that market.

Too many buttons for an iPhone or Touch in my opinion.

I thought the same thing but then I realized given the original platforms they probably couldn't have had it any other way without increasing development time / cost.

I've learned that games that try to force regular controls onto the Iphone tend to control horrible though, a bit skeptical still.

Given the record breaking sales of the DS last year I don't think the iphone/itouch is taking anything from Nintendo.

It is cool to be able to play your games on the iphone/itouch and other smart phone and portable media devices ,but I those devices will never ( never as in the next 5 years) be purchased or used mainly as game devices by most gamers.

Cool but won't buy. iPhone isn't for games like that and I don't play them on the damn thing.
Plus from the way the DS version controlled I can't imagine this being better in that regard or even close to what the DS did.

The controls though.... I worry
mmm

and Graphic wise that article mentions its better then the DS version, from that screenshot it looks pretty gastly.

Does this have any new content or is a streight out port?

I'm not disagreeing, just saying never say never. The iPhone is my most played device last year.

Chinatown Wars is the best GTA. No foolin'. Dunno how the controls are on the hideous Apple devices, but if they turned out alright, I give the game a very hearty recommendation.
