Guitar Hero II on PS3?

i'm pretty sure i posted that this was working a really long time ago.

i only have guitar hero 1 to test and my ps3 is hooked up to a lcd tv so the game is pretty much unplayable without a calibration option. it definately works, though.

i'll see if i can dig up the post.

The Pelican adapter works perfectly for GH1

and this radio shack one works for GH2

This really shouldn't have been this difficult

I'm glad this adapter seems to work for people. For me, no. I've got the latest firmware (1.93). The adapter will sync with my PS2 dualshock, but no dice on the SG controller. I've tried just about every combination I can think of to get the PS3 to sync with the guitar, but not a thing.

Here's what generally happens: while the PS3 is off, I plug in the usb adapter, I plug the guitar controller securely into it. I boot up the PS3. The sixaxis syncs as controller 2. I start up GH2. Sixaxis responds, but absolutely nothing from the guitar.

I've even tried many combinations of syncing the sixaxis in different controller positions. No dice. Should I just take it back to Radio Shack 'cause it's broken?

Hmm.. I was going to hit another Radio Shack today but this adds a wrinkle. :/

Here's the adapter that I have (this was the clearest image I could take)

Ok I went to another Radio Shack and they had two different PS-to-USB adapters for sale. I got the one that you have pictured above (I want to note that the packaging makes no referrence to PS2 only PSX). It was on sale for $8, not too shabby. I will report if it works when I get home later today.

That adapter works great for me.

Does the whammy bar work?

good question. But i don't know - my whammy bar doesn't work - but it also doesn't work with my PS2 either (but it used to work before I loaned it to my mate).

I don't know what you're doing wrong. I plug the USB end into the 4th slot on the PS3. Turn on the system with a PS3 controller - play disc - when the game comes on switch to guitar - no problem. I've never had to sync the GH2 controller to the PS3 - it just works.

maybe it's because you're using the first USB port for the guitar?

Tried all of the above already. Every USB port. Every controller position for the sixaxis. Combinations of syncing and not syncing the sixaxis. Syncing at different times. Even the more dangerous route of plugging in the usb adapter at different times and switching the (working) dualshock and the SG controller at different times. I think I've tried every permutation I can think of. Nothing. It's going back to the store tomorrow. It was nice having hope for a little while, though.

Let me ask the most dangerous question... which kind of BC do each of you have in your PS3? EE+GS (North American) or software+GS (European and 80G)?

It shouldn't matter since this isn't likely an emulation issue, but rather a usb/adapter issue. But I have a fully BC 60gig (NTSC).

I can answer my own question:

It doesn't work. So here's the rundown for the GH1 & 2 compatibility with the Radio Shack "PSX TO USB" adapters:

Positives:

Play GH1 & GH2 on the PS3!

Negatives:

No whammy bar.
90ms lag. (compensated in GH2, very slightly noticeable for GH1)
Up and down is reversed in GH1 & 2 menus. No big deal.

After all in said and done it is an acceptable albeit flawed way to get the Guitar Hero games on the PS3!

Thanks guys for the tip! I've been waiting for about a year for this information!

Yea, unfortunately not all adapters work. I've tested different USB adapter and standalone USB pads and while virtually all of them work in XMB/PS3 games(so far the only one that didn't was the 360 pad), only select few also work in PS2 emulation.

I am curious if PS3s with no EE behave differently in this regard, but I haven't had a chance to test one yet. It's not an emulation issue - but since you effectively switch to different hw on older PS3s, it's not completely out of the question I/O could be affected.

mines fine except for the wammy bar. I don't know if os truly broken cuz I had to snap it back in and I don't have a ps2 to try it out on. plus I had this adapter for years and I haven't updated the firmware but like I said it works fine for me.

sorry for digging up this age old thread

I'm thinking about retiring my ps2

I have 2 Guitars, GH1, 2, 3 + 80s for PS2 and am planning to get Aerosmith

Summing up this thread:
The Pelican adapter works flawlessly for GH1
The Radioshack adapter works flawlessly for GH2 except whammy bar

What about GH3 (for PS2)?

Do I really have to buy 4 adapters to play GH1 and 2 on my PS3 in multiplayer?

Why in fucks name can't the GH3 Ps3 controllers be used for GH1 or 2?

Why the fuck has no manufacture come up with a fully working adapter yet?
