Gun Rights Group to Stage Mock Mass Shooting at UT

$30 that literally everyone who's involved complains about politicizing mass-shootings when talks of background checks and closing loopholes come up after shootings.

Can someone tell me this, gun laws practically never change even when people fight for it, not even the most sensible things get passed, so why are there gun activists? Why are they fighting for a cause that basically never exists?

Because getting literally everything you want is clearly not enough and anything less is unconstitutional.

Purely hypothetically, if an individual was to feel threatened by this, would they be within their right to physically defend themselves?

I feel water balloons would be the most appropriate method, but YMMV. There are more... energetic ways to go about it.

this might be one of the stupidest things I have ever read

Is there some kind of message they are trying to send with this?

Like a drill for how to react to an active shooter situation or something?

I mean, why would you stage a mock mass shooting? How does this promote Guns Rights?

I do hope that they're ambushed by people in wizard outfits throwing beanbags and yelling "Lightningbolt! Lightningbolt!"

By showing how -- in this pre-prepared fantasy world -- if everyone were armed, shooters would be fought off easier and unable to go on killing rampages.

I am becoming more and more convinced that people in Texas are batshit crazy or just biblically stupid.
Maybe it is all of the droughts that they have had over the recent years, I do not know...maybe it is breathing Bush air which would probably explain Florida too.

So I can't be the only one thinking this...what happens if people get shot with real guns at this? Will the argument "things like this wouldn't happen if people were armed" _finally_ go the fuck away?

No they will convince themselves that whoever used their gun was just an Obama plant to try and take away their guns.

So if they are going to be blasting gun shots from speakers, whats stopping someone from really shooting that day and no one will notice. Not one of the activists, but someone that wants to just shoot people.

So people lost family and friends trough a mass shooting, and GRG's think the best idea is to make them go trough that emotional horror again just a few months later?

I think this is going to be my go-to-gif when ever there is a topic involving gun rights in the USA. shit is depressing.

A bit like shouting fire in a crowded theater? no?

Speaking of - Imagine this scenario:

1. You're in a crowded theater.
2. Everyone in the theater has a gun on them.
3. Some psycho stands up and starts shooting at random people.
4. Everyone else stands up and draws their gun.
5. Now, the second your view of the original shooter is blocked, all you see is dozens of people with guns drawn and you hear gunshots. Some people are diving for cover, some people are firing in the general direction of the psycho. Some people are pushing past you to try to run for their lives, climbing over each other frantically. At some point you see several people with guns drawn shooting, but you don't know if they are the killers or if they are shooting at the killer.

How the hell does this situation resolve itself with only the original shooter dead (and his original victims) and no other collateral damage?

Fucked up people with their delusions of playing a hero have to fabricate make-believe scenarios where they get to live out their fantasies.

I'll be waiting for all the backpedaling and mental gymnastics when the inevitable mass shooting happens at a public college in Texas and no concealed-carry fanatics stopped it.

In what world would this ever be a good idea? I still want to believe this is satire, there's no way anyone would actually want to go through with a protest so monumentally stupid.

there's been a few events in the last couple of years when "altruistic" gun owners tried to step in and save the day during a crime and ended up killing someone.

they never gets much media traction and gun supporters wave them off as statistical anomalies.

literally nothing can change the debate. facts and reality make no difference to pro-gun activists.

I think UT has received a unique opportunity to troll these people. I mean, this is basically LARPing for gun nuts. What better way to highlight the silliness than to have a group of LARPers dressed as wizards glitterbomb the fake terrorists? Preferably while shouting fake spell incantations.

UT Austin to gun rights group: Think again.

AUSTIN, Texas — The university is aware of media reports about an outside group’s intention to stage a group performance of a mass shooting on the UT Austin campus this weekend. Our Board of Regents' rules designate our campus as a space reserved for the business, research and educational purposes of UT Austin. Within the university community, the campus is a place for the vigorous exchange of diverse viewpoints, which is an essential part of the educational experience. The property or buildings owned or controlled by UT Austin are not, however, open to outside groups for assembly, speech, or other activities, including theatrical performances, as are the public streets, sidewalks, and parks. Only the university itself, faculty, staff and student groups may engage in such activities on campus. This applies equally to an outside protest group, an outside theater troupe, or any outside group wishing to use the facilities or grounds of the university.

Many groups seek to use the university’s facilities each year and they are all treated equally and are turned away. For example, we have not allowed the Westboro Baptist Church to protest on campus and have not allowed labor groups to protest on campus. We have told outside sporting groups that they may not use our sporting facilities.

When outside individuals come on campus and violate our rules regarding use of our grounds and facilities, they are asked to leave. If they do not, it becomes a criminal trespass matter. We suggest that any outside organizations planning such events on campus relocate them to other space where they would be allowed.

Our Dean of Students Office is attempting to contact the leaders of this group to make sure they are aware of our Board of Regents’ rules and procedures.

Media may attribute this statement to UT Austin spokesperson J.B. Bird.
