Halo 2 VS Halo 3 GT Comparison :(

Here's a direct comparison between two similar looking areas...

meh, i know that PDZ is doing more impressive stuff in these two screens, but i also know which one gives me a headache.

Damn...my memory must be off or something because I never remembered PD:Z looking anywhere near that good. Is that a bullshot or off-screen picture?
That's a real capture.

The problem with PDZ is its HDR lighting usage. Like PGR3, certain positions would result in a dull haze. There are some REALLY ugly locations in the game as well. The jungle area is one of the best, I thought, along with the second and third missions.

Noticed I mentioned their framerate failure? It was a serious problem. The game was a seriously flawed piece of software, but it did some things very well. It should never have been a launch title.

Some PDZ shots for comparison fun...

Those screens make me want to play PDZ past the 2nd mission where I stopped. They look pretty nice.

and it's art of course. PDZ overuses just about every flashy thing it can do. way over done HDR, bloom, bump mapping (parallax i think but could be displacement, been a while), and reflections.

Again, it boils down to the visual style of the game, the size and scope, as well as the nature of what is being compared (single vs. multiplayer).

I popped in the beta again, just now, and gave it a once-more through. As I said, many of the effects are subtle, if not understated. Since we're, at this point, used to shit litterally blooming / blowing up in our faces, it's understandable that people might sense a void when the game doesn't blind you with specular highlights on every surface, or overdone bloom effects washing everything out :) . that being said, what is there is indeed awesome--I dunno, maybe I'm just too impressed with valhalla's lighting, water effects, foliage, and textures (esp. the central structures.). Going back and forth between it and Halo 2, there is honestly no comparison.

I don't give a rat's ass if the game field is super duper vast - remember Bungie guys pointing out in the E3 trailer that "see those mountains in the distance? that's no placeholder or mere textures. Those are actual polygonal mountains that you can hop on a banshee and reach" or something ridiculous like that.

the bottome line is Halo 3 beta is neither demonstrating that kind of graphics nor anything to rave about. Stop saying "compare to Halo 2". Of course it looks better than Halo 2!!! Do you expect anything less??? But does the beta has the visuals that make people go "WOW!!! That looks simply awesome!!!"? No. No. No.

Well, I still don't think that's a good excuse, the first trailer for Halo 3 showed us that it can be one of the best looking games on the 360, no matter if they meant the art direction to be in place for the Xbox, if they reached that target, I still think that trailer looks great but the Halo 3 we're seeing right now doesn't.

it's no excuse. it's reality- for better or worse. how is the trailer much different? i'm sure you will see the battle-worn MC with long draw-distance in the single-player.

Speevy said:
dark10x, are you playing the Halo beta right now?
No...and I'm not slamming Halo 3 either. I think it looks fine, just a bit disappointing. I'm sure it will look a lot nicer in single player on my own TV, however.

You can't really go out and say it's reality unless you are one of the developers on the team making the game, unless you are which then...well...errr

I for one think the established art direction for the series is not holding the game back graphically. Maybe the game will look better in single player (although Halo 2 to me looked superb in both multi and single) but GOW has already shown us the 360 can pump out nice visuals in both single and multi. I'm not willing to give Bungie a free get out of jail card just because this is Halo 3.

Give it up already. AA has an allegiance to Sony, everyone knows that. Disregard his comments if you have to.

Give what up, exactly? Apparently everyone doesn't know that, because someone asked about it. Oh wait, it was AA himself.

Holy zombie Jesus! You guys are comparing the atrociously designed Perfect Dark Zero with beta Halo 3?! :lol

PDZ is just rooms and corridors packed with shaders to conceal it's major shortcomings, the most prominent one being the LACK OF FUN GAMEPLAY. UNGH! I feel the urge to slap someone!

I I take offense to a fanboy goggle wearing dude telling other that they are misguided trolls for being unimpressed with the game, and that's about the extent of this.

Man, I don't even play Halo regularly, so there's only one fanboy in this conversation. Feel free to go look at my scores on Bungie.net and you'll find no MP for Halo2 and all of one game for H3. You can take all the offense you want to being called a fanboy, but even a brief perusal of your posts tels the story to anyone who cares.

Yeah that is very lame, you don't see me crying and boohooing if someone thinks the graphics are mind-blowing..good for them..I wish I felt that way. People need to learn to accept other opinions without thinking their universe will implode.

Says the other fairly obvious troll in this thread. Your John Mayer fixation made sure I remembered you from the last thread wherein you felt a profound need to slag on Halo3. Why not just name the thread "We hate Halo3" and be done with it?

After playing more I am more impressed than I was initially. The game looks great and is a significant step up over H2. I really cant wait to see what SP looks like.

There's a design philosophy on display in these Halo 3 screens that has not been mentioned. In a word: Clarity.

Valhalla is absolutely coated in foliage of many different kinds, just like many of the pics from other games people (speevy) have posted. That foliage is kept very short and is spaced such that it never, ever obscures weapons, grenades or equipment placed or dropped on the ground. Bungie could have built tall, dense grass but that would lead to frustrating hunting around for stuff - where that sniper rifle, where did he drop it?!!? Oblivion, anyone?

That philosopy of "clarity" extends to the lighting, to the way the spartan models are lit and to the "clean" look of many areas. It's not cluttered on purpose.

Two other notes. Frankie has said in past Updates that in the final game, the foliage decorators will be both interactive - they move aside as you go through it - and destructable. Correct me if I'm wrong, but in those PDZ shots, the foliage is something you just clip through, and it never responds to gameplay? It's an important distinction that won't come out in screen shots.

Campaign has none of the "clarity" requirements the MP arenas have because they are about immersion, not making a level combat arena. We'll be seeing fog, darkness, rubble etc. Also, longer grass and denser foliage, which we've seen in the wireframes Bungie has posted.

Is it my imagination or are there like a hundred times more graphic whores this gen than last? Every single game thread inevitably turns into a discussion about graphics these days.

Just a suggestion: blocking michaeld was one of the best decisions I've ever made as a NeoGAF member. ;)

Stop the hyperbole..I am loving the game, very fun. Just not the graphics.

True, but who's fault is that? The players, or the console manufacturers playing up the visual capabilities of their hardware? I mean, remember when the 360 and PS3 were unveiled, and each side was busy comparing the size of their own penii?

Wow at people who get so worked up over opinions of videogames they block people....if something this small irritates you I would hate to see how you guys handle real issues that are serious in life.

Well we were promised flying cars and cures for cancer and all that. Along with a price increase for hardware AND software vs. last gen, I think people expect to be WOWed.

This gen is tame compared to the PS2 vs DC days.

Accoridng to this thread, it's impossible to capture Halo 3 in a screenshot. :P The actual beta is rumored to look completely different and the screenshots are designed to fool us poor fools who did not buy Crackdown or find another way in.

I'd love to, but I'm not about to buy Crackdown and I can see no other way. I'm a HUGE Halo fan (as my long defense rants should show you), but I'm not going to buy a game I found boring for a 3 week trial period of Halo 3.

Gotcha. But come on. This:

Is a total joke. It's like someone compressed it, added jaggies, slapped some opacity on it, and then compressed it again.

It is possible to do good screen grabs.

I think a lot of other people had the same idea (that is, I've already attempted that).

PM me your address and I'll ship you my copy if you promise to return it when the beta ends. I don't need it. ;)

Wha? I don't think that would be necessary. If you were actually serious, though, I appreciate the offer. :P

I'm going to hit up some other rental stores while I'm out today and see what I can find.
