Halo Movie Rumor: Denzel = Master Chief?!?!

A couple of weeks ago he spent a good chunk of the night sitting at the table across from where some friends and I were at a bar in Wellington. It was really funny 'cos we heard him tell some joke about Halle Berry or something which - because he's Denzel Washington - elicited some pretty exaggerated laughs. But yeah, he was definitely in town.
 
Oh man, just thinking about the possibility of Denzel Washington as Sgt. Johnson makes me giddy. Yet, that would be so weird. Actually, seeing Halo as a live-action movie would be so weird, so nevermind.
 
Why would such a recognizable actor like Denzel Washington be hired to play Master Chief when he wears a f*cking helmet for the entire movie?

i know. they should get a nobody like James Earl Jones to do it since it will only be a voice and who the hell cares about the acting.
 
So master chief is going to have his kid get kidnapped by the covenent and is goign to have to bend the rules to get him back?
 
Doesn't he make, like, 20 million dollars a picture, anyway? $20 million to wear a f*cking helmet and have a stunt double take over for him half of the time?


I'd also say that the role of Sgt. Johnson is a little bit too "beneath" Denzel Washington for him to actually consider it. The character is a walking cliche, why would Denzel stoop to that level? An Academy Award winning actor playing Sgt. Johnson in Halo: The Movie?

You guys are aware that James Earl Jones DUBBED darth vader, right?
That it wasn't him inside the suit the entire movie, right?

That it was actually a white scottish tall dude that would actually say the lines when recording the movie which made the other actors laugh because darth vader is supposed to have a deepvoice, not some scottish accent, right?

You guys also know that Master Chief already has a voice, and it would be dumb to make a movie and not use that voice, right?

you are all also assuming that the suit in the movie will have a fully covering helmet or a totally reflective vistor.

Hollywood has recently started to change things when they get book and game sources, gone are the good old days of a direct translation of the sourse material that all the fans can completly fall in love withand find no fault.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand -- Denzel Washington says he wants Peter Jackson to provide the special effects for a film he plans to direct, a newspaper reported Friday.

The Oscar-winning actor told the Dominion-Post he had discussed the project with Jackson during a four-day visit to Wellington this week. He declined to provide other details.

Jackson's Weta Workshop and Weta Digital provide special effects services for major movies.

Jackson, who won an Oscar for "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," is working on a movie version of Alice Sebold's best-selling novel "The Lovely Bones." Jackson, 44, is also expected to be the executive producer of a film based on the popular video game Halo.

Washington, 51, won Oscars for his roles in "Glory" and "Training Day."

Ultimately it does not matter. You're supposed to identify as him, which is why he never takes his helmet off.

As mentioned earlier, the first book detailed his brown hair, freckles, etc as a child. Early on in the second book also describes how his skin looks even more pale than his usual white skin since in this instance he had gone into cryo-sleep while still in his tight-fit full battle armor.

As far as I remember, the books have MC as a tall, lanky red-hair kid. Not a brunette. But my memory isn't the best.

I'd say Denzel has a better chance of being Sgt. Johnson. There have been really good points made. The actor who plays MC will have hardly ANY facetime and real opportunities to act. MC is very quiet and reserved, imho. Then MC will probably be done the EXACT same way as Vader was done. Voice actor + physical actor.

I'm thinking:
The Rock plays MC physically, (or some equally imposing wrestler)
Voice acted by the original actor that did MC in the games
Sgt. Johnson by Denzel
Cortana by Naomi Watts (PJ already has her digits)
Captain Keyes' daughter by Anne Hathaway
Captain Keyes by Sean Bean
And Hugo Weaving plays SOMEBODY, who knows.

It's just that the idea of well-known actors as these characters is something that doesn't sit so well with me right now, no matter who they are.
 
I hope they're not planning on showing his face. And that said, they should just pick some unknown since you won't see him anyway.
 
I could live with Denzel as the chief, he is a great actor and in this case race can transcend the character, being that he never really shows his face. I am guessing that if they went with a name like Denzel they would have more shots of him with his helmet off. Either way as long as the look is there and this isn't like Doom level movie crap it will be good.

While I agree, I think Denzel lacks the bassy voice that Master Chief has in the games. Who does his voice in the games anyway? Why couldn't they just use him for the voice?

Edit - If the Rock was going to play MC he would probably want 15000000 for the role and to do the VA himself.
 
I call bullshit. In the script review which details the first 3rd of the movie, Chief suffers some wound and through the torn suit we see his ALBINO skin.

Black people can be Albino too. If he is an albino in the movie you won't be able to tell what his race is.

But the point of the scene is that the MC is stark-white because he's always in his suit and never gets any sun, not that he's albino.
