Halo Reach & Bungie at GamesCom 2010

Imperial Hot said:
Really? If your friend had a pirated version of Halo Reach on his 360 and offered you to play it, you wouldn't? I'm buying the Legendary edition the first day it comes out, but if presented the option I would play it early on a friend's 360. I wouldn't pirate it myself or purchase a pirated copy but I don't really see the harm in playing it at a friend's house.

I'm kinda with this. Although, it would depend if he is plopping down 60 bones afterwords for the real deal. If he isn't, fuck him. I think it would be acceptable as long as he didn't try leaking stuff online.

Dear Abusive Teammate,

The reason your team 'suck so bad' is because you came into the game with your shitty complaining attitude and whined about their performance from the bat. You caused them to be annoyed and disinterested in the victory because it would have meant something to you to win. Your asinine insults and truculent whining piss guaranteed we would not only take the loss just to hurt you, but we never once tried to help you when you were being punked ruthlessly by the lead Shawshankers from the opposing team. In short, I am glad they rectally flushed you and I am happy knowing that almost every experience you have in life is frustrating and difficult and that you will never realize it's YOU not them.

On that note, the past week has also rooted out a bunch of people who are really devoted to towing the company line. After months of straining for clues it was pretty strange to suddenly hear all these cries of 'no spoilers I only wanna see what bungie shows me' to the point of not wanting to know map counts and armor options. Also the amount of seemingly personal rage and hate directed at the modders over the fact that Reach leaked - which in of itself was unsurprising if not expected - came off as fairly sycophantic to the publishers as well.

Maybe it's the close relationship GAF and the industry have, with so many members of Bungie and 343 posting regularly here that causes the fan group to sort of fall in line with the 'official' policies. Good job community directors! For that same reason, this post is of course probably an unpopular opinion but this is just something I've observed personally after quite a few years of posting at less mainstream communities.

GAF wants to support Bungie. Not support the fucking pirating modders that stole a copy of Reach from Microsoft illegally and then if all of a sudden a tech-savvy inconsiderate shit friend of mine attains a copy brinign me within reach of playing it myself, and I'm going to not be able to make that connection in my head and allow myself to be legally but most importantly morally compromised?

As you said. It's with reason that GAF has this mentality. We love Halo just as much as Bungie does. And we don't want Bungie to have to suffer for modders' decisions.

Back before the 360 came out, I developing a friendship with someone at work, a fellow gamer. Turns out he had a modded Xbox 1 with an epic hard drive and nearly every released game on it. I learned of this when he invited me to come over and check it out.

We are no longer friends.

Fair enough. Like I said, piracy sucks, but I personally wouldn't stop talking to a close friend of MANY years over something like that.

This guy did once buy games, and he owns all the consoles, but he complained it got too expensive for him. Which I've always personally felt was a big driver for piracy.

But as I said, it seems I was dumb to ask, but I just wanted a taste. I'll still own 3 copies of this game come September 14th.

Hopefully my 3 copies make up for one of his. I know what you're saying though.

EDIT:

And there you go. :D

Maybe some of us just have a little more grown up view on things, and realize when you steal something from someone, it is not a victimless crime. People work day and night on these things, and people just come in, get it for free, and don't give it a second thought.

People think it's not such a big deal because it happens on the internet, they'd never ever do the equivalent in real life. Or maybe they do, and they're just as big scum bags in real life as they are on the internet.

Agreed. If the guy has already bought it, why not?

Also, how many gaffers in here did the rewards zone thing and posed as gamestop employees for early beta access?

Exactly. And in doing this you have harmed just as many people you will harm by playing Halo Reach early when you plan on buying it on release day. Bungie loses nothing, Microsoft loses nothing, and unless you are a dickhead who leaks shit fans are unaffected. Why wouldn't you? Because it's "wrong". There has to be good reasons behind something being "wrong" other than it is considered to be wrong. If no one is being harmed and everyone is getting paid, what's wrong?

Yeah totally wish I hadn't posted now.

You did nothing wrong, the pile on was pretty laughable. Everyone in this thread is lying to themselves if they say they wouldn't at least think about going to play it a little if given the opportunity.

Going back to 2 Minute Turkish's little thing.

It's not anywhere near the same thing at all. You guys keep throwing around these analogies and they all suck.

The dude was going to download it anyway...

Turkish just wants a little peek at it.

He's still buying the game and going to support Bungie.

How is it stealing or anything similar?

Hahahaha, nice story Frank. I had a kid in MLG the other day say to me, "Hey you were on MLG top 10 right?" And I said, "yes". Then he says, "Oh dude, you're beast, can I be your friend?" I declined because my list was full. The rest of the game, he's doing NOTHING but talking shit to us. "You guys fucking suck!" "You're garbage" "You guys don't know how to play this game" "You're so fucking bad New York" It was funny because this little kid was just asking to be on my friends list. The entire game he was running into the other teams base and pulling the flag immediately. What this does it causes the rest of the team to fight 3 vs 4 to try to protect him. He pulled the flag 11 fucking times. That's about 5 times the normal amount. You've got to kill the team and then pull the flag, ideally. The less pulls the better. Somehow, we won. Of course, we all go negative and this little shit goes positive. He has about 10 assists and I had more than twice that. Lol, of course he sends a message afterward. Really annoying. I hate playing with people with negative attitudes, confrontational people. People who quit out because they don't get sniper off the start. It's ridiculous.

/rant.

According to this argument, as long as you weren't planning on buying a piece of software, then it's OK to steal it. Everyone still gets paid, no one is hurt, right?

The problem is that real people put real time into making this software. They spent years on it. And they get to decide when to release it, when to sell it, and for how much. Because people put time and effort into these things, there is such a thing as an intellectual property, and by stealing something that someone created - no matter if it's physical or digital - you're saying "screw you and your time, I want the fruits of your labor for free."

That's where the argument breaks down - it may not be a real object, but hundreds of real people put real time into making it. And you don't have the right to overrule them and steal what they've created.

It's just a friendly debate. I don't sense any real venom here.

It's not up for debate, it's video game piracy. His friend stole a copy of Halo Reach. And he is here asking, in a thread where people who made the game post, whether or not he should go and play it or not. You cannot say that buying a copy, or 3 copies of the game is justification.

Time to get hyped for Metroid/Halo double combo baby. :D

Not sure I can afford both right now.

Halo console $499AU
Legendary $199AU
Limited $129AU

I have $50 on the limited already, and a $50 voucher waiting on the legendary. So I'm still looking at almost a grand on Halo Reach.

:( Mortgage am cry.

It's ok to play pirated software guys, as long as you promise to pay for it later. When it comes out. Maybe. If you aren't bored of it then and playing MW2 again by then.

Edit: what cocop said.

If you don't intend paying for something you can't have it. But if you are going to pay for something I don't see what the harm is in sampling it early. I would not download a pirated copy of Reach either way. However, I would not feel bad for playing it early on a friend's box if he planned on purchasing the game on release date. I mean you really can't play online with a modded box anyway.

.

Pardon me if I'm wrong, but isn't it inferred that no one is hurt because the individual had planned on buying, or pre-ordered the intellectual property to begin with?

No, you wouldn't be as wrong as the dude who pirated the game. But by going over there and playing with him, you are in essence condoning what he did. You are saying that he did nothing wrong. Yeah he was gonna do it, but that doesn't mean that you validate his actions and go play it.

If you don't care about piracy either way, or you're for it, then man up, admit it, and go on to his house and play it. If you care in the least about piracy, then you shouldn't let your friend think you are okay with what he did by going over and partaking of his stolen goods. Simple as that.

See how well the argument "I promised to pay for it later your honor, I just wanted to try it out and see if I liked it first" holds up.

Yeah the funny thing is that people who pirate video games use both of those arguements. Neither are valid.

I can't speak for others. Personally, I wouldn't play a game early if I didn't plan on paying for the game upon release.

Yeah still not sure it's that simple. I also never said he did nothing wrong. Not once. What he did IS wrong. How can it NOT be wrong?

From my point of view, I've already pre-ordered 3 copies of the game (whether you believe me or not is completely up to you. I have some GAFfers on my friends list, they'll no doubt see me online). For me, this is a chance to get a sneak peek at a game I've already half paid for and am absolutely hanging to play.

You should see the fat asses here in south Florida at the local Whole Foods. :lol

I saw one guy ask for 4 different samples of soups. He may of been homeless...

Questions:

1- Can I buy a sealed copy of Halo for PC now or sometime in the near future and still get the visual flair? I know the previous deadline is no longer in effect, but is there a new one?

2- How does the rememberreach.com robot arm thingie work? Is it actually making the dots appear on something like a panel of glass, or is it all digital, by having the camera take snapshots of the shining light's location and putting it together in software? I can't wrap my head around what's going on and it frustrates me.

Also, thanks Cuban legend and Sai kun for hanging out with me and some friends earlier on MM. Constant spanish blabber must've been annoying, specially for Sai kun.

... This used to happen all the time in open markets and people still do it today, you know, you pick up and inspect the tomato you're about to purchase to make sure it is a quality product before you purchase it.

So, is it wrong watching streams and youtube vids of the leaked copies?

It's just like going to a friend's house and play an illegal copy.

Exactly.

This is not how the system works. You don't go to the store, take what you want off the shelf, take it out of the store without purchasing it, and then later, perhaps, if you feel like it, pay for it. Not even credit cards work like this.

How isn't it that simple?

If you honestly think what he did was wrong, you should be chastising him for doing it, not being all buddy-buddy with him and benefiting from what he stole. Anything else would be hypocritical.

You're still setting your own terms regarding something someone else made. You simply don't have the right to make that call. Especially when it comes to software.

I know.

I was referring to the streams because a lot of us did watch them and now we're being critical against someone who wants to try the game because a friend of his has it.

I can't see any difference.

I would buy a sealed copy if possible, someone could have wrote down their code and returned it or traded it in, etc.

And that remember reach thing takes a picture or video or something of the light points.
