Have you ever bought a console just for ONE game?

Yes.

N64 - Super Mario 64
Sega Saturn - Daytona USA
PS1 - Wipeout
DC - Toy Commander (well, there were a number of titles, but this one stood out the most)
OG Xbox - Halo CE
GC - Luigi's Mansion

do it all the time.

bought a Snes for SMW
bought a Megadrive for Mortal Kombat
bought a SegaSaturn for Nights
bought a Playstation for FF8
bought a N64 for SM64
bought a Gba for GoldenSun
bought a DC for PSO
bought a Gcn for SW:Rogue Leader
bought a Ps2 for TTT
bought a Xbox for Halo
bought a DS for MKds
bought a 360 for Oblivion
bought a Wii for Zelda:TP
bought a Ps3 for Demon Soul
bought a 3ds for SSFIV:3d
bought a WiU for ZombieU

PS3 : Metal Gear Solid 4

For my birthday that year I got a PS3, Ninja Gaiden (as there was a used game free with each PS3), The US collectors edition of MGS4 (I missed out on the euro version, people were reselling them on amazon for €800 by that point, even before release), and the hardback MGS4 guide.

I've played a lot of games since then on it, but it was that that made me decide to actually get it.

Whenever i buy a console or hand held system it is primarily to play 1 game... but i end up expanding on my collection.

The only system i didn't really expand on too much was on a Nintendo DS. I got it mainly for Mario Kart, but i wound up only buying a few other titles to go with it (New Super Mario Bros being another key title).

NES: Super Mario Bros was the only game i was interested in, but wound up with loads of others.

PS3: I only wanted GTA IV, but i wound up buying that game last - MGS 4 was my first ps3 game.

I bought my Wii for Xenoblade Chronicles, and No More Heroes 2.

I remember buying an N64, specifically for WWF No Mercy.

Sony-ish things I usually buy early, without a specific title in mind. Seems to be this way for the PS4 also.

I got Wii for Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Never ended up getting a lot of use, besides maybe when I got Donkey Kong Country Returns. I'm not doing that ever again.

Dreamcast, Shenmue

Basically this, except I also wanted GTA4 for PS3 too at the time.

N64 = Ocarina of Time
Gamecube = Windwaker
Wii = Skyward Sword.

Lol I only buy Nintendo consoles for LoZ games. When I beat the game then I go back and look at the library. When the next LoZ game comes out I'll buy a Wii U as well.

I've bought PS2, PS3 and Xbox and Xbox 360 without any interest in the games that were at launch, but I probably won't do that anymore.

I'm almost feeling like buying an XB1 just for KI though, but I'll probably hold out for the enventual physical release when if the game becomes popular.

I bought a Gameboy Color specifically for Pokemon Yellow and Pokemon Silver. I was on edge for a long time about buying a PS3, but when Gundam Vs Extreme was announced, I bought it and I've never regretted it. I bought a PSVita for P4G and I just bought a 3DS to play Pokemon X and Y with my friends.

Just today I bought a Nuon for Tempest 3000, but there's almost literally nothing else to play on that platform so I don't know if that really counts.

I did buy a PSP for Resident Evil Portable.

I played Mario Sunshine at a friend's house and wanted a GameCube solely because of it. When I went to the store to pick up the game, I discovered Melee and got that as well, but the fact here is that Sunshine sold me on the console alone. Both games are now two of my favorites for the system.

Also, I got a Game Boy Color just to play Pokémon.

Similar story for me.

I simply wanted to play Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate by any means and bought a Wii U. It's currently the only game I own for the system outside of the packed-in copy of Nintendo Land. Of course I knew in advance that I'd eventually buy Super Mario 3D World, NSMB U, Wonderful 101, Mario Kart 8, and eventually X.

But I had to have Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on day one.

Got a Wii for Xenoblade Chronicles. Not that big a deal though, bought it from my friend for like 40 euros. Shame the game didn't quite hold up to my expectations.

Still, I'll probably eventually get a Wii U for X.

Mega Drive for Sonic
N64 for Super Mario 64
Playstation for Tomb Raider

I think those are the only times I've specifically wanted a console because of one game, although I subsequently ended up getting tons more games for them.

Edit: Oh yeah, my brother got a Vita just for Persona 4 Golden, which kind of applied to me too.

Xbox to play Halo
Xbox 360 to play Gears of War
PS3 to play Metal Gear Solid 4
PSP to play God of War (that worked out well, 5 months later they released the games on PS3)
3DS XL to play Resident Evil Revelations (yep, another one released on PS3...)
Wii U to play Platinum games (Bayonetta 2 and Wonderful 101)
PSVita to play Gravity Rush

Getting a PS4 for Killzone
Will get a XBone just for Halo5

PS3 for MGS4 (which I already beat on a friends PS3.) also bought Uncharted 2 though. Lucky for me I fell in love with Uncharted 2 as well.

Yes OP I bought a Gamecube just for RE-Remake as well and I bought a N64 solely for M64. In fact I bought every major Nintendo platform for just one game:

SNES: SM:World
N64: M64
GAMECUBE: RE:Remake
Wii: Mario Galaxy

DREAMCAST: Shenmue
XBOX:Halo

Twilight Princess on Wii. Didn't know until later itnwas on the GameCube I already had. Don't regret it though. 2nd favourite Zelda

Crisis Core on PSP as well

Capitalization in thread title, OP's preference for Sony consoles and "pure-gaming machines" makes me think this is a subtle comment on the future of the Xbox ONE.

Yep. I bought Xbox 360 specifically to play Mass Effect (silly me, I thought it really will be exclusive title) and PSP for Final Fantasy Tactics :)

I bought a Dreamcast just for Sonic Adventure. I ended up buying other games for it of course (many in fact), as soon as a week after launch when I picked up Toy Commander, but I went out to buy it purely for SA and would have been happy had that been the only game I ever owned. The minute I saw screens and videos of SA I knew I had to own whatever I needed in order to play it. Sadly nothing has ever made me feel that way since.

Gamecube just for Zelda Twilight Princess. Will buy a Wii U in the future for my wife, but part of the reason to buy one is being able to play Wind Waker HD and the eventual Zelda Wii U.

Also sold my Wii early on in the gen to get a Xbox 360 for Halo 3. One of the best decisions I ever made. Got to play good third party games and online with my friends.

N64 NWO vs the World.

PS2 was bought for GTA 3.

PS3 (FFVII remake... yea shut up!)

Xbox One - Blue Dragon

DS Lite - The World Ends With You

PS1 - Mother bought it :P

SNES - Mother bought this, too.

NES - Mother bought this one also.

Genesis - Mother kicking ass and taking names. :)

Dreamcast - Shenmue

Sega Saturn - Mother bought this.

I don't remember what I got my other Gameboy handhelds for, but maybe I got them for pokemon, or possibly yugioh.
