So, I've got a good chunk of RPGs, but I love getting obscure stuff.
I'm looking primarily for Japanese releases.

So! What am I missing? Some things are obvious (like the last 5 Eldorodo Gate games) but I may be brain farting on some!

You go back to Super Fami, so are you including PC-Engine? If so, you're missing a MOUNTAIN of RPGs on PC-Engine CD.

I go back to Famicom! But I have yet to get a PC Engine CD. I'm kind of timid about getting one because I know it will ruin me. (And I haven't seen one yet, I think.)

Is there any reason to get Shenmue 2 Xbox over Dreamcast? I somehow doubt the Japanese version (IS there even one?) would be backwards compatible.

That's what I told him. I got him to buy Emerald Dragon on SFC because he didn't have a PCE CD, but he should totally get one!

Shenmue 2 on the Xbox runs smoother and loads faster. The DC really struggles at times with that game.

No, there's not a Japanese-language XB Shenmue 2 (that I'm aware of). The XB ver. has a screenshot function that can be used at anytime in-game, and a choice of graphics filters For Your Viewing Pleasure(tm).

i'm with the others. get a PC-Engine or a Duo if you wanna go that route and try some of those. along those lines, it may not be worth counting, but there's also the Far East of Eden Ziria RPG that was released only in Japan. this is a remake of the PC-Engine CD original.

Welp! Then DC version it is.

That's a bit of an obvious one, and although I didn't say it, my 360 is currently dead so I am holding off on 360 games until I buy a new one.

Quest 64.
You raise an interesting question of "are there enough RPGs of quality on the 64 to justify getting one?"

Ogre Battle 64 and Paper Mario are enough reasons IMO.

And how obscure are you interested in? Do you want to play these games, or just interested in collecting?

Depends what you'd consider an RPG. If Harvest Moon 64 counts than yes, if not...there isn't much there.

Aidyn Chronicles was carried as the it RPG on the N64 but couldn't really deliver. Ogre Battle 64 is an SRPG, and it's pretty much the best one out there, but that really is the RPG list to speak of on the N64.

Unless you're really interested in Pokemon Stadium One and Two.

DQ 2, DQ 3, FF2, FF3, Mother--Famicom originals, all of the Famicom Fire Emblems, the Famicom Ys, Destiny of an Emperor series on Famicom... there are tons of Famicom RPGs that I'm sure you can find in the stores you go into.

Remember he's in Japan and thus does not have access to US games immediately and DOES have access to Japanese games immediately. Aidyn Chronicles was never released in Japan

SRPGs and their ilk probably won't be finding their way into my collection.
I do look at these games as something I will eventually play, but I have no qualms with trying something that is "bad". (Hell, I liked Phantasy Star 3 more than 2!) So it's a bit of collecting but mostly playing.
If OB64 and Paper Mario are it, I may just WiiWare Paper Mario when I want to play it.

I am also not too interested in doubling up on my games. Yes, I have 3 copies of Tales of Phantasia, but I am content with my Mother 1+2 and probably will not be buying the originals unless I stumble across them really cheap (DQ Famicom and DQIV famicom were ¥100, for example.)

Definitely check out Destiny of an Emperor.

How could you not have Steambot Chronicles for PS2?

After all, it's a relaxing, non linear RPG that's also quite obscure, a bit slow but very fun.

Yes... where DID my copy of Bumpy Trot go?
Must have gotten lost in the shuffle during my move. Probably sitting in a box at my parent's house.

Here are some quick pulls from my big list -

Ys 4 (PCE), ys 4 (SFC)
ys 6
shining in the darkness
golvellius
haja no fūin

If you liked SRPGs I'd also recommend some Saturn ones (Terra Phantastica, Riglord Saga 2).

I think I may finally break down and start looking at PCE CD prices today. Well, what console would be my best bet? The PCE always seemed like a huge headache to me.

Just get a Duo R or RX. The original Duo can develop audio problems due to bad capacitors, which you can fix if you're a little electronics savvy, but it's just easier to get the R or RX. Only difference between the two is the RX came with a 6-button pad (the same design as the one on the PC-FX and no reason to pay a premium over the R).

What about the GBC version of Dragon Quest 1+2? Oh, and the PSP version of Tales of Phantasia (Could be wrong, but I think its the definitive version of the game)

Oh, and there is the other Megaman Battle Network games.

And there is also Live a Live and Robotrek made by Square and Enix.

Super Fami version trumps it pretty hard. Phantasia? I already have 3 copies and have not even played the game yet. Ugh.

What the fuck is Dark Hour?

Majin Tensei 2 is a billion times more stylish than the original.

Get Bushi Seiryuuden (SFC) if you want to try a JRPG with actual gameplay.

Since LiveALive was already mentioned, I'll go with Rudra no Hihou. I personally enjoyed it a lot (not as much as LiveALive though damn that game was awesome).

Seiken Densetsu 3 is also notably missing.

Hybrid Heaven is a weird game, it's like Konami had no idea of what is should be, it's as if they tossed Metal Gear, resident evil, a fighting game and a stock standard rpg into a blender.
