Here is how replacing your HDD on PS4 works (ComputerBild)

Don't think that will be possible.

Your right 1.5TB with dual 750gb platters is the largest that will fit at the moment, though I'm sure you could stick a 3TB external on it with some cables running out of your PS4 to it but it wouldn't be elegant.

love it!

the same label does the same with cars:

every piece

must be shitload of work

Yeah those did strip real easy. I remember saying "Well, I guess that was my one shot at upgrading the HDD...hopefully it worked."

It did.

You people really need to buy a screwdriver set so you're able to use the correct bit size, it's really not that easy to strip that screw.

needs 3mm~ (12.5mm) for the larger 2TB drive. Unfortunate they could not fit a full capacity 3.5" drive in there. 4TB+ drives please. No one can go all digital with such low capacities...

I'm wondering if thats why they might have afforded the bay an extra few mm of height to at least allow for the larger 2.5" drives.

hmmmm i have a 256GB SSD i want to slap into my PS4. I'm not doing a ton of digital downloads anyways....waiting for those test results

An SSD certainly does make a noticeable impact in many games with the PS3 (GTA V, for example), I expect things to be even better on the PS4 (as a system that is much more hard-drive dependant than the PS3 was).

Sounds like they'll do a full teardown tomorrow before noon (CEST)!

I'm excited.

From their site, cant wait:

The era of the new generation of consoles breaks from COMPUTER GAMES PICTURE today at: The first Playstation 4 is the editorial ago and tested for heart and kidney immediately. Get ready in the coming hours and days to a flood of news, images and videos. Be there when the editor switches the console from its packaging. Learn what the PS4 is really under the hood when the editor takes the inner workings of DADDELKISTE under the microscope. In all these and much more you get answers soon. The attached live ticker keeps you in the coming days constantly on the cutting edge of things.

Wow so they will already tear down the console. I thought this always happens after the console release, but hey I'm not complaining. That'll be very interesting... so, thread update anyone? Since they are disassembling the console, the HDD replacement was just a small portion of their article.

That screw. Need a ring of that or something.

Why is the PS4 facing backwards?

Because if it were facing the other way, then you would just be looking at the bottom of it. The way it's designed is that its front is on the left instead of the right (like the PS2 and 3).

And yeah, the PS1 looks more out of place than the PS3.

You're right, I don't really have a proper set...a couple of the sizes for my adjustable screwdriver have been lost over the years. I did okay until the last screw..I guess I got too excited.

And what do you mean, you people?!?! :)

But it really is. I have like a whole room of tools and loads of experience constructing, disassembling and reassembling shit. I was still not prepared for that screw. The material was soft like a peeled banana or something. More pressure might have helped, but I already applied slightly more pressure than I'd usually do, because at that time I had already heard the stories about ruined HDD screws. Still messed it up in the first turn.

Wow, Computer Bild Spiele delivering the goods, who would have thought that? :)
Hope they really have a teardown tomorrow.

So... any idea if the PS4 HDD compatible with PS3? Bear with me for a second here... I have a launch PS3. With the original 20GB hdd. That's right, we're talking the no wi-fi model (Ethernet4Life). I always kind of planned to upgrade it, but it just never happened, Xbox 360 got most of my play-time along with almost all the multi-plats.

Now, with PS4 coming, I'll be getting on PS+ for multiplayer... so why not just take the 500GB from my PS4, shove it into my PS3 for all those PS+ freebie games, and then upgrade the PS4 storage to the 1-2 TB range, maybe a nice hybrid?

They're all 2.5" SATA drives right? I'm assuming the latest SATA is backwards compatible, but this is stuff I haven't been paying a ton of attention to the last few years...

Maybe they have different types of screws (or I was just lucky). My Slim screw didn't seem especially soft (not exactly hard either), but never in danger of getting stripped when screwed with the correct bit.

They will: "Tomorrow it gets down to business. We're gonna take a closer look into the inside of the PS4" and at the last picture they are already removing the screws which require special equipment.

Your plan will work.

BluRay drive.

Nope, that's just standard electronics structural integrity stuff. Hard drive cradle or whatever. Not a heatsink at all. My laptop has that on the inside too. Although it could absorb some heat, that's not its function.

Also similar:

The thing that's ABOVE the heatsink for RF shielding, but not part of the heatsink itself.

I still really want to see what Sony did with the cooling here.

No I think he means that plate underneath the HDD looking like crinkle-cut crisps which could be some kind of heatsink.

With the way the case pops right off I can imagine third-party custom designs to replace it and maybe even official ones from Sony.
