They might have changed it. I only did it with my EU launch phat. Still rocking the original 120GB drive in my PS3slim.

You're right, I don't really have a proper set...a couple of the sizes for my adjustable screwdriver have been lost over the years. I did okay until the last screw..I guess I got too excited.

It's obviously a prototype or just a single screw, which was made that one time. That's always "expensive". When you order thousands... in Sony's case millions of them, the price goes down until it's worth a couple of pennys.

I thought one of the biggest advantages to consoles was ease of use, the whole plug and play thing. They should have just added an ssd for the os and a hot-swappable hdd for games. Considering 500gb really isn't enough, I guess people will need to learn how to take apart their consoles now.
With 3D printing nowadays, I don't think it will be long before we see one.
Also, to those speculating on drives for the PS4, I wonder if we can cut out the top of the drive cage, thus eliminating the height issues.
Ok now that we know where the HDD is located can someone tel me what is this strange cover near the bottom :

It's been confirmed SATA2. And HDD is most likely same as PS3 (5400RPM (for heat) and 9.5mm height, 2.5").
Honestly not sure what the lines are going to be like.
The delivery drivers across the US are going to be busy on the 15th though.

Size as in dimensions, or data storage?
it's a standard laptop sata drive - 9.5mm? Should also run at 5400, unless I'm wrong then someone correct me. Any standard laptop or solid state should work. Really shouldn't' be a data size limit.

The shadow is due to the HDD being in that little cage you pull out. There still isn't enough room for a standard height HDD.
I've been doing desktop support for years and work on a lot of laptops. That's a standard laptop drive slot. It will likely take the slim laptop drives too since the cage attaches to the drive itself for insertion.
Look at that family:
1) Why have they not flipped the PS logo on 2 and 3?
2) Why is 4 backwards?

Alright, so that should be easy to upgrade over. I was worried about getting another replacement HD with potentially worse specs.
Hopefully Digital Foundry will do a load time test with a bunch of HD's.

The screws with the original 20 and 60 gigs were notoriously soft. I was using a #1 Phillips screwdriver to upgrade my HDD and still managed to strip it a bit. You literally had to use needlenose pliers to loosen (those suckers were on tight) and then use the screwdriver afterwards.
The caddy was still useable with two mangled screws and 2 decent ones though I contacted Sony's CS to see what size screw I needed to replace them. Rather than tell me, the CS rep I talked to sent me a whole new HDD caddy with replacement screws.
But yes, they corrected the screws for later revisions to be not as soft nor as tight.
We could design and print our own :O

They should have had them all sitting flat actually and just took a slightly wider shot.
To be honest though, the PS1 should have been on it's side or even upside down because near the end, that was the only way I could get it to run games and I'm sure I wasn't alone.

Being usb3.0 it should support sata3 - not like it really matters with most ssd, let alone hdd.
I have bad news for you.
If it goes the same way as PS3, you can't get much worse. They probably pay more for the SoC than for the HDD. If it is 5400rpm, then any 9.5mm height drive running 7200rpm will be a welcomed upgrade. I wonder if you'll be able to use a desktop drive like you could with the PS3 (ghetto-like with SATA cable coming out of the box and need external power supply for HDD itself). From where everything comes apart, seems like it may have to enjoy the console lying down, rather than upright.

This is one of the very few positives about UK PS4 coming out two weeks later - this question will have been answered by the time I place an order for whatever the largest HDD that will fit for my console.

If it can fit 12.5MM there are 2TB capacity drives available... The question is not will 15mm fit, rather will they have 3mm more clearance to go from 9.5mm->12.5mm

Also closest we've got to a look behind the plastic shell, very cool its simply the black glossy part you take (Slide?) off to replace the HDD, really admire the PS4 console design the more and more I see more of it, not so surprising though considering the amount of hardware Sony makes.
I have to say too, PS4 stripdown! Yes! Would love to see how everything is organized inside!
