I played hundreads, maybe thousands of hours of this game in singleplayer and local multiplayer. Never, ever played online. Always with friends staying over / in their homes.
Sigh, I feel ya. Some of my fondest gaming memories are exactly this - hot seats in HoMM 3 with a bunch of friends, from dusk till dawn. Good times, good times.
ITT - I'll keep an eye on this release, but if the expansions aren't in then... uhhh, not really that interested anymore.
Um, they're basically polishing the graphics I don't think they can fuck that up but with AB and SoD missing I don't think i'll be getting it.
and the HotA mod wont be compatible.
Well, this is the company that did the recent Final Fantasy 4 Android to PC port.
That has point texture filtering (so, pre-3dfx days) *and* runs battles at smooth 15 fps.
One of my favorite games of all time. Reeally excited about this.
Never got around to getting the GoG version so unless Ubi somehow manages to fuck this up completely, Ubi gets my money on this one.
Indeed. It's games like this that show why iOS and Android are the best mobile gaming platforms. While this is a port and not a brand new game, it shows the level of depth you can get with iOS/Android games and it's far beyond what 3DS or Vita can do.
It's a new implementation of H3 with support for expansions, mods, custom resolution and ports for Linux, Mac and Android. You just drop it in the original game's folder and run it. From the basic things I tried out, it seemed to function very well. At least on Windows. Going to try it out on my tablet later.
Awesome news, but it's a shame this only has the base game.
I already have the complete edition, and I didn't know that there are HD mods for it. I'll look into that for now.
Best lore, best artstyle, best gameplay, best campaigns, best factions, best units, best music, best EVERYTHING. It's just the best, it's a timeless masterpiece. It's the Diablo 2 of strategic RPGs.

Oh jesus. Can't and won't care about the overprice.

For me Diablo 2 is one of the best action RPGs ever, and HoMM 3 one of the best strat RPGs ever. I'm just comparing their status of genre defining games, "go-to" games for their respective subgenres for me, not their likeness (or lack thereof) in terms of gameplay or polish.
About the artstyle, I can see how some may prefer 2s, but it's a matter of taste really.
I didn't see it was WoG at first. Tried it with my original game files and just started a normal game, but I guess the differences in WoG aren't apparent until later in the game. Going to take a look at the stuff you linked later.
For me it was the last fun one.
Biggest reason is probably the art style (i prefer the style of HoMM2 though).
HoMM 1-3 had an interesting style that made me curious to see more, the artstyle of all the sequels did nothing like that.
It combines a certain amount of complexity with good balancing and fast/responsive gameplay. The previous installments were more simple, especially HoMM1. Later games didn't play quite as pleasently due to either increased micro management (HoMM4) or slower loading times (HoMM5, especially with AI involved). The latest installment tried to change some core mechanics and simplified resource management a bit, not all fans were fond of that.
Question: does the King's Bounty series build on Heroes? If I play the former on a touch-screen laptop, is there any compelling reason to get Heroes on tablet (which I have as well)?
The other games in the series can't compete with the insane amount of depth and polish that its gameplay provides. Between the 8 different factions (9 in the expansions), each of which has 7 upgradeable creatures and two different hero types; the hero development with dozens of different secondary skills for your heroes to learn and hundreds of artifacts to find which can enhance their skills and abilities; the magic system with four different schools of magic each featuring 5 levels of spells with each spell having 3 levels of expertise; and tons of different overworld locations and events and other wrinkles which add layers to the strategic and tactical gameplay, it's one of the deepest and yet most accessible strategy games of all time.
It's EXTREMELY well-balanced for a game with so much depth. (Or at least vanilla HOMM3 is. They kind of fucked that up in the expansions with the Conflux faction.) The AI is very impressive as well and actually forces you to think about what you're doing, unlock the rest of the series which has really stupid and underdeveloped AI. The amount of content is mindblowing as well. There are dozens of well-designed standalone maps to go with the handful of in-depth campaign scenarios, which will take you hundreds of hours to complete. And once you're done with those, you can download thousands more fan-made maps and campaigns to keep you occupied for the rest of your life.

The pixellated versions seem exaggerated, I remember being able to see more of the monsters' features at least. Or were some of the PC versions "upresed" already ?

It came out at the right time and had all the good features without being bloated at the same time.
Some say HoMM2 was the best, but 3 really brought a lot of new things to the table: all creatures have upgrades, more castles, better magic, graphics, actual campaign. In terms of features it's definitely the most balanced.
All the games after HoMM3 had big flaws. HoMM4 and 6 took a step back and cut out important features like unit upgrade and resources. HoMM5 is quite close to 3 and is the best entry since Ubi rebooted the universe, in my opinion. That being said:
- Ubisoft's Ashan <<<<<<<<<<< Might and Magic. Original lore was much deeper and merged sci-fi with magic
(oh yeah, the devils/Kreegan in HoMM are actually alien in the grand scheme of things).
Instead we got a run-of-the-mill fantasy universe, automatic fail.
- HoMM3 doesn't do 3D and is better for it: better visibility (they still haven't solved how to properly show the map and resources in 3D), quick animations and functional UI. It's like Civ5 vs 4, the new one looks better but plays slower because of all the visual clutter.
And maybe a bit like Worms 3D, the game just doesn't work well
- 3D also ruined maps: too convoluted, too cluttered, dungeon levels have horrible visibility.
- Easy to set-up and play modes with little clutter. Random map creator actually making fine maps, unlike Heroes 6. It's the same problem as in Diablo 3: it's easier to randomize 2D tiles than 3D art, and therefore create better maps.
- Simply put: when this game came out the genre was at its peak and it was the best in terms of gameplay, graphics, campaign etc.
Mostly excited about a hopefully stable online multiplayer. My favorite HOMM, but current versions has extremely buggy online play - hopefully the HD remake fixes that!

Yea, it's a gross misrepresentation to what you'd actually see while playing. I suppose they took the characters and stretched them out to prove their point. Which hey, sure it's nice to have higher-res sprites and all, but that isn't totally fair. I just took this screenshot to compare what it more-or-less looks like. The archangel is there to compare what they're claiming to what you're typically going to see.
You've gotta wonder why they had to redraw it since all those were originally 3d models that should've been archived along the source code and rerenderable at higher res, but I guess no one was really in charge of archival at NWC.
