Hey Sega, How About A "Sonic's Ultimate SATURN Collection" ???

If Backbone really wanted to cram a bunch of Saturn games into a compilation they could just rip out the FMVs.

Lord knows I could do without Legend of Oasis's horrific ending.

Yeah, why not take a bunch of the Sega Ages releases and throw them on a disc?
They did that. It bombed, so they never did it again.

And as luck would have it, it was at that point that new entries in the 2500 series began to improve in quality. Oh well.

Well that collection still had the excellent port of Virtua Racing so it wasn't totally worthless. Mind, the Golden Axe remake still gives me nightmares.

The Saturn hardware was just a pain to work with be it emulating it or just developing for it. Add to that the fact it wasn't all that popular and you can see why Sega wouldn't bother. Personally I'm not a big Saturn fan and I'd much rather see Sega put their Dreamcast games on Live Arcade and PSN.

As far as Panzer Dragoon Saga goes, in that 1up Retrospective, they said the source code was lost.
Wouldn't be a problem if it were emulated.

God, I bet that's why SEGA is waiting. They don't want to sink any money into a total remake, so they're just waiting for hardware powerful enough to effortlessly emulate Saturn, then they'll drop it individually with a filter applied and charge a premium. It all makes sense.

While we're picking at problems with the list in the OP, SEGA would have to re-translate Dragon Force even assuming US publishing rights have reverted back to them, and Shinobi Legions was published in the US by Vic Tokai so I'm guessing there could be problems there as well.

I personally would love a Saturn collection, but tbh I don't see them releasing a collection for a system that is 1. historically hard to emulate and 2. widely recognized as a pretty big failure.

If they're having troubles with Saturn emulation, I don't get why they can't just port all of their PC ports of those games onto the Xbox 360 and release them as a collection.

Because most of those PC ports were awful.

After playing HotD: Overkill, what I really want is to get some of the arcade stuff perfect at home. We still haven't really gotten Daytona, Sega GT, Virtua Cop 1, 2, or 3, Virtua Fighter 2, Last Bronx, etc. perfectly brought home in their arcade form. Everything's either been a port, home version or just plain not ever released.

A Model 2 collection would be ideal.

Jeremy Parish asked about this on the recent Retronauts podcast in an interview dedicated to the Genesis Collection. Supposedly not a possibility at this point due to the near impossible task that is Saturn emulation.

Sega made GiriGiri, which is the best Saturn emulator you can get. (Well SSF is great but needs a top end pc)

I can't remember exactly, but I on the podcast the guy was being all Saturn emulation is so difficult! And don't bother bringing up the Panzer Dragoon thing, cause that was PC version yo!

Then Jeremy is like what about PS2 Nights?

And the reply just kinda trailed off without an actual answer or something? Lol. :|

Isn't there already a working Saturn emulator for PC, made by some random guy? Could have sworn there was.
the emulator isn't perfect and has some performance problems -- ie. even beefy machines have trouble running some games on it

you can forget about trying to get it to run on a ps3 or xbox 360. Even if they could. it would be too much work optimizing it.

SSF doesn't need a top-range PC at all. Last time I checked, anything with the SSE2 instruction set should do. My mid-range PC from 2003 could play almost anything that I threw at it, though the most 3D-intensive games stuttered quite a lot.

Still, that was 4 or 5 years ago. I'd like to think that the program has improved a bit since then.

The PS2 NiGHTS isn't the Saturn version emulated. It's a port.

I wish we got some of the SEGA Ages series up-ported to the 360/PS3... the Monster World collection, NiGHTS 1 remix, and Phantasy Star collection in particular.

I wonder if I'd really want other games.

Add Jet Set Radio Future to that list and I think we've truly got the Ultimate Saturn Collection!

Was the Saturn Shinobi game with the awkward digitized graphics any good?
Yeah, it was actually pretty awesome. Not quite on Shinobi III's level, but certainly a worthy installment. The FMVs are soooo fucking cheesy they're funny, and the gore is hilariously over-the-top.

I never got to play any Saturn games because I never owned one. I would love it if Sega did something like this (and yeah, I know it's never going to happen).

SSF specs never go down with new releases. In fact, they went up a lot 3 years ago after the GFX rewrite. You need a semi-decent Core2Duo or a upper-end AMD if you want 100% speed on any 3D game, specially the high-res ones (like VF2). Of course, more and more people have such CPUs in their machines nowadays.

Interesting. I do have a Core2Duo now. Maybe I oughta chuck NiGHTS at this thing again to see how it fares.

Most of the Saturn games I bother playing these days are 2D, though.

or master system/gamegear. Saturn was pretty cool but no sonic was laughable. I mean sega cd even got one and the 32x had some form of sonic inspired title :lol

Not that I buy their excuse (Saturn emulation should be handled fairly well by both the PS3 and the 360), but the presence of a PC port of Panzer Dragoon and a re-coded from scratch PS2 version of NiGHTS doesn't really prove much. And in the case of the SEGA Ages releases like Fighting Vipers, they're recoded using the arcade version as a base, not the Saturn version."

You're right. Perhaps I should have offered the progress made on fan-emulators as better evidence for my point.

Just a Mega Drive port with FMVs.

In fairness, the port also contained some Sonic-team produced special stages, which though based on the Sonic 2 ones, expanded the concept with multiple paths/prettier music/visuals and more speed. I rather thought it was worth buying the port for these alone.

In fact, I'd go so far as to say these special stages were one of my favourite Sonic-y things ever.

Saturn WAS the greatest system ever made.

But the lack of a true Sonic game certainly did not do it any favors, as the Saturn saw a very early exit in the 32-bit console wars in North America(for various reasons).

when I got my Ristar cart I said so that why they called their new system Saturn and they put planet look like Saturn behind this cute yellow thingy ..so the next game will be on Saturn , is he the new mascot , well he is cooler that Sonic , and I was happy kid that day ..

250px-Ristar_cover_EU.jpg

but Ristar sequel never come..it was failed hint :(

but seriously I didn't cared about Sonic with Saturn , because Saturn there were tonz of super awesome first party SEGA stuff left and right on that sexy system..but I guess that was only me :(

The Saturn version of Sonic 3D Blast is worth it for the soundtrack alone. It's all redbook audio too, so you don't even have to play the shitty game to listen to it.

The special stages were excellent, though. Pretty much the only game that did the half-pipe style justice. Sonic 2's are rather lame in comparison.

Why is this near impossible exactly? Sega included a copy of the original Panzer Dragoon in Panzer Dragoon Orta which was an Xbox release.

that was the PC version not the Saturn version.

was thinking..they could use the pc code and the sega ages code from the PS2 games they did. Not sure if they would all fit on one disk.

And Burning Rangers isn't even worth the trouble, might as well develop a new sequel with a decent camera this time around.

WTF are you talking about!!!!!!!!!!!!! Burning Rangers is a GREAT game!! I loved that you could replay the game again in altered stages once you beat the game's main story. It was fun to see how long you could last on a stage without continuing, and then get the rating. Yes the graphics glitched alot on the last 2 boards, but that was a great game. I loved the Chessy voice acting, " you are ok now" and all the other cute line. Burning Rangers is one of Sonic Teams best games. I enjoyed Burning Rangers more then any of Sonic Teams' Dreamcast games, with the exception of Sonic Adventure 1. SXo don't talk down to Burnig Rangers. I guess I was lucky that I got to play all those rare Saturn games.
