Hideki Kamiya: "Multiple publishers turned down Bayonetta 2"

Still too early to call this game a failure especially when only taking into account Japan. Japan console market today is a shadow of its former self. NA and Europe will enjoy much better sales. Overall Bayo 2 in Japan did ok considering that market today. I see it breaking 100k this holiday season there.

I hope Kamiya's comments educate the port beggars.

it will bomb harder in NA and Europe. bayonetta 1 came to a huge 360/ps3 user base in those territory's, which actually bought third party games vs a very small user base that doesn't buy third party games, especially mature rated ones. anybody expecting this to do much better then japan is delusional.

Geez every time i look into a Bayonetta 2 topic there's always at least one of the following

Stealth port beg
Blatant port beg (I'm pretty sure someone asked in an earlier topic possibly the DF one for Bayo 1 why it seemed like Port begging didn't = ban for Bayo 2 but it did for Scalebound)
Exclusive related saltiness even though we all know the situation with the game
General attempts at putting down the game in some way because it's a WiiU exclusive

How many times does Kamiya have to say that Bayo 2 wouldn't have happened at all if not for Nintendo. Why can't some just be happy that the game even got a sequel, heck WiiU only owners arguably have more of a claim to being salty/disgruntled about not getting future installments of games that appeared on the WiiU.

If people are so 'concerned' about the game selling badly nothing is stopping you from going out and buying the game and a WiiU if you don't have one, heck your purchase just might contribute to Bayo 3 happening rather than stewing at the fact that Nintendo resurrected what was essentially a dead IP. That's basically the equivalent of "If i'm not happy then no one else should be".

It merely exists. It's not good, it's not bad. Button line is that people will not get play it.

Sounds like a personal problem. I'm going to play it. A lot. Probably a hundred hours or more, and I'll be doing so from day 1.

I don't see how it existing can be construed as anything other than good. Even if you're not going to go out and buy a Wii U right now, the price might eventually drop to a level you or whomever else is saying stupid shit like this might pay for the console. Then, when it's cheap enough or whatever mental barrier you have to jump through to convince yourself to buy a console to play a game you want, since Bayonetta 2 exists, EVENTUALLY you can play it.

As opposed to never being able to play it. Ever.

Bottom line is that i'll get to play it, and that's awesome.

A hell of a lot more people are gonna get to play it now than there were before. Obviously.

Your tag is appropriate.

Don't think any other game has provided this much salt.

Oh, but we will! Only 21 days left.

People have already played it. I will get to play it in three weeks. Try again.

Also button line!

People WILL get to play it. That is the bottomline.

I think I understand how Pachter feels: when you say something objective and fans react in such an emotionally charged way. Obviously "people" playing the game in the 6 figures is not the same as people playing the game in 7 figures. You can call it stealth port begging, you can call it salt but truth is a franchise that was once hailed as the next DMC is now heading to complete obscurity. When Nintendo announced the game in 2012 they did it hoping the console would have picked up by then. Right now, 3rd parties are not selling on the WiiU, non family friendly games are not selling on the WiiU, hell even Donkey kong is barely registering. So yeah, it's such a great thing Nintendo paid Platinum to make Bayonetta 2 and send it to die.

I think you need to check the definition of "defense".

We get that you're upset but why are you so worried about Nintendo(they're rich as fuck) and the people that get to play Bayonetta 2(might be the best game this year)???

I know, right? They should have left it to die like everyone else.

You mean brought Bayonetta 2 BACK FROM DEATH.

Jesus fucking christ is it that hard to understand?

I guess he thinks that if it was multiplatform that all of a sudden out of nowhere that people would flock to a Platinum flagship game and it would become the next huge franchise in gaming.

Nothing points to that of course, there's no rationale behind it.

The market changes but it's not like all of a sudden it's going to shift in favor of a hardcore Japanese action title.

Those are not the choices, dude.

The choices were people playing the game in 6 figures versus zero people playing the game ever. Why is this so hard to understand?

Hahahaha. No, you're right, surely THIS was going to be the Platinum game to sell ten million copies like it deserves and propel the company to superstardom. If not for that darn Nintendo!

Are people really trying to spin "Nintendo saved this game with the power of money" into "Nintendo doomed the franchise to obscurity"?

So we've moved past denial phase into anger in one post. The way some of you "fans" are unable to cope with Nintendo doing the exact opposite of what you are saying is awe inspiring.

People that don't get to play Bayonetta 2 for whatever reason should buy The Legend of Korra and make it a multi-million seller and thus they will encourage the publishers to fund more multiplats from Platinum Games.

I think you're saying you'd rather the Wii U not exist right now, so that years down the line someone will remember Bayonetta exists, fund a sequel, and it would sell millions and warrant more sequels.

My thought is that, there's no guarantee that someone is going to fund it later, no assurance that it would sell well enough to warrant any more sequels than what we're getting.

I'd rather not take that chance and just get a sequel now, but I understand where you're coming from

I've said it before, but people act like Bayonetta 2 selling badly is going to make Sega think "Shit, we shouldn't have let Nintendo pay for its development, we should have released it on other consoles instead" when the reality is Bayonetta 2 is going to make Sega think "We were totally right to cancel it"

Honestly, from the sales it seems the other publishers made a good choice for their business. Hope it does alright for Nintendo in the West, but I doubt it personally.

But you said something stupid.

7 figures is bigger than 6 figures. I am being condescending, not stupid.

Noone seems to be noticing that Platinum is not exactly waiting for Nintendo to throw them a bone, neither is Bayonetta their only game, it's a highly versatile, in demand studio. Instead of bringing Bayonetta "back from the dead" and throwing it directly into the abyss they could have been finishing scalebound or some other project not destined to die. And I am saying "defense squad" because you are being selfish.

For the 1000th or more time though, Nintendo paid for Bayonetta 2 to exist. You must know this by now. Before Nintendo there was only Bayonetta 1 - nothing else. Now with Nintendo's help we have (soon) Bayonetta 2.

Why aren't you happy?

You know that there is a Platinum Games game releasing at the same time with Bayonetta 2 on the console of your choice, right? Buy, play and enjoy that. See? Everyone can be happy.

Yep, Sega wanted no part of it because they didn't think it had sales potential.

The worst thing in the world concerning this game would be for anyone that would rather it never be released than be released on a failing console.

That's just complete bitterness and sour grapes.

It's understandable that many are upset due to the fact that it might not be viable to play it on a console they don't care for but it's how some go about it that is really temper tantrumish.

100!

Prove yall just not a bunch of messageboard guys just talking junk, please. Legend of Korra is not even on Wii U so that should make yall happy. Or are yall just gonna sit and watch other people buy and play the game but be quick to show up in a sales thread? Pick the poison.

it will bomb harder in NA and Europe.

What we definitely already know is that the First Print Edition (Europe) sells like hot cakes and is sold out everywhere.

It sold out faster than the Hyrule Warriors LE on amazon.de. That's saying something.

7 figures is bigger than 6 figures.

Getting Bayonetta 1+2 is better than just getting Bayonetta 2.

What's better than that? Getting Bayonetta 1+2 and also getting lots of salt.

Did you really just accuse people of being selfish?

Sir, I'm sorry, but you are not very bright.
Holiest of shit...

I am sorry but what brand is that ?

It would be impossible to guess from your post history.
KZ 3 is still last gen biggest technical achievement. But of course gameplay wise they dropped the ball after 2.

I think we are getting somewhere... A killzone game, with the design approach of 2 & 3 and a story by the guys who made Spec Ops the Line.

It was not really my most anticipated game but after the awesome siege on Visari's palace and the glorious ending of KZ2, I was so looking forward to the 3rd one. And I was like, where is my glorious final battle ?

To be fair, the Wii U two years had a lot less value proposition than it does today. I was never mad at anyone for the game being exclusive, but I found it much more difficult to justify a Wii U purchase at that time.

Now anyone can buy a (practically new) refurb from Nintendo for $200 or one the killer bundles this season (my buddy just snagged the SM3DW/Nintendoland bundle for $275!!) and the system itself has been improved through various updates (folders, quick start menu, etc.).

Beyond the improved user experience and price, the Wii U definitively has the most number of high-quality exclusives. Whether or not these exclusives speak to people are another situation, but nobody can say that the value isn't there with titles like SM3DW, TW101, Pikmin 3, LoZ: WWHD, MK8, Hyrule Warriors, Bayo 2, and DK:TF, not to mention all of the eshop offerings. I mean seriously, who doesn't want to play Shovel Knight on a Nintendo system?

Yadiyadiya. I own all three systems and my Wii U gets the most use both in terms of games and other features that I adore like my ability to wake up on Saturday morning and browse GAF without having to leave bed (I have a tv mounted in my room).

TL;DR In 2012 I felt similar feelings toward Bayo 2's exclusive nature, but objectively the Wii U has pulled its weight ever since and become a daily use machine for me.
