OP Blu & Exile are awesome, thanks for that recommendation.

here's a few that i like:

FIrst off, this is my all time favorite rap song:

Its produced by Prefuse 73 and the MCs are MF Doom and Aesop Rock. All three are awesome.

The song is called Blacklist

http://youtube.com/watch?v=5Tgv__vJlvk

This second song is from Pharoahe Monch, its my favorite song from the last year:

Its called Let's Go, here's the live one

I've never seen a rapper do as great of a live show as Monch, see him live if you can

Since the new year is about to hit and most new albums, both mainstream and underground, have dropped. I thought it would be a nice idea to make a thread to help fill peoples Hip Hop music voids. I'm a pretty heavy hip hop head so I'm always on top of new album releases but even I let a few gems fall through the cracks.

My GF works at a local music store and hooked me up with a few CDs for Christmas this year. I was pleasantly surprised by one standout album.

blu-exile-below-the-heavens.jpg

Blu & Exile's Below the Heavens

This shit is fucking hot, everything from the lyrics to the beat is top notch. The whole album for the most part is pretty damn raw, it's probably towards the top of my list for album of the year. I've been spinning this shit nonstop since Christmas.

Heres a sample:

Blu & Exile - Soul Amazing

I've got a few more I'd like to recommend but I'll do it a bit later. Feel free to recommend anything from previous years, it doesn't have to new.

I checked out Blue & Exile. Really good stuff. Good hip-hop sound and awesome beats.

You guys should check Asamov out, they're awesome.

Haha was going through my music and found a group I forgot about.

Onyx. Not really a fan of the hardcore hip hop scene but I always found these guys to be dope. I always get amped when Sticky does his thing :lol

Didn't really like Aesop Rock at first but I'm starting to come around. His style is a lot different then most. I have his new album next to me unopened :lol Only song I've heard off the album is None Shall Pass.

I should've posted this before, but I didn't. They are a bunch of DJ's from Spain that just remix some classic tracks.

On their albun, "THE REMIXES VOL. 1 REVISITED", they remix Stunt 101 by G-Unit and it sounds better than the original. They also have a remix of MVP by Big L which is sick.

Aside from that, I can't stress enough how much you guys should give Asamov a shot.

Eww some of you guys have terrible taste ;). But yeah hip hop is dead and backpacker shit that still sounds like its from the mid 90's isn't going to save it.

Bacdafucup was the first album I ever bought with my own money. God I miss those days :(.

Saying we have horrible taste and not posting your own is not exactly the best way to make a post :)

The thing is I don't really listen to rap anymore. I can list the rap I do listen to but you've all heard it (or should have) as its mostly more than 10 years old.

like a seasoned veteran out of training

I'll try the Blu and Exile stuff when I get home. I have become a mixtape junkie in the last 3-6 months. For anyone to say "Hip-hop is dead" just isn't listening to much except for the radio. I have heard all kinds of great rap. From some down south stuff, west coast stuff, east coast stuff, etc. There is some good stuff out there. But to be honest, not sure if there are CDs that I can sit down and listen to straight through. That is where mixtapes come in. I get the best tracks in a nice lil package.

It helps to have a GF who works at a music store :P

Edit: Oh shit! I wasn't even paying attention, when did Nujabes drop a new album?

Yeah...
Remember when you could do that? I never said there aren't good rap songs every now and then. Across the board the quality of the music is down. It's could have a savior you never know but as of now rap is stagnant.

I can highly recommend Panacea - The Scenic Route (2007).

There style is kind of a mix between Tribe and Outkast.

:lol

So you don't listen to rap, but you somehow feel qualified enough to say it sucks nowadays and everyone's recommendations are bad? GTFO. I don't listen to it much anymore either, but you don't see me saying Little Brother sucks or backpacker X wouldn't know how to make a gripping song if Danger Mouse gave them his best beat, while Ghostface was channeling his aura into him.

I haven't heard much new stuff lately that I've liked, so I'll throw out some essentials.

Atmosphere - GodLovesUgly & Seven's Travels
Grayskul - Bloody Radio & Deadlivers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDE-snmOwvg
Jurassic 5 - Quality Control
Danger Doom
Deep Puddle Dynamics - The Taste of Rain... Why Kneel? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvFP3kz3-kk&feature=related (ignore the skate kid, it's the only sample I could find)
Them - Them (now known as Themselves)
Aesop Rock - Pretty much anything he's put out
Brother Ali http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgJQJesMs9s
Heiruspecs - Tiger Dancing http://youtube.com/watch?v=i24lYJBzLu0
Deltron 3030

Blu and Exile came to mind as soon as I saw this thread.

DJ Jazzy Jeff - Return of the Magnificant
Joe Budden - Mood Muzik 3
Devin the Dude - Waiting to Inhale
Scarface - MADE
Little Brother - Getback

I know a ton of people have slept on the new version of Slum Village. Believe me, they are the truth. I highly recommend their self titled album. It is amazing.

If you're a fan of southern hip-hop i gotta recommend the latest UGK album. Also, check out the homie Z-Ro. He's one of my favorite MCs... homie is ridiculous.

If you're feeling the current LA scene (who isn't) be sure to check out Inverse. They are releasing a pre-album album "So Far..." tomorrow (not sure what time exactly, but they say New Years Day).

Just an update: this project is really good. Here's a link to their blog.

Great tracks on that one. I bought this on wax I love it so much.

I [legally] downloaded his new album, and promptly deleted it. It wasn't bad, just not that good.

I did the same thing with PUTS - Stepfather like last year or w/e, but now its one of my favorite albums after listening to it a couple times. And -his- album? Isnt Little brother 3 ppl including 9th Wonder??

I don't know when it changed from "guac" to "gwap" but some people out there are retards.. We used to call money "guac" as in guacamole because it's green. Then someone heard someone say it I guess and didn't associate it with guacamole and thought they heard "gwap" and then ran with it (Xzibit)..

fucking telephone game bullshit.

Hydeout Productions 2nd Collection is incredible. Nujabes delivers again.

Yep, If I was a rapper, I'd kill a man to get to work with Nujabes.

The atmosphere on this album is fucking awesome. Not on the album but another great JMT track: http://youtube.com/watch?v=7r0KpWMNxnM be sure to pay attention to the lyrics and the 2nd verse by Rugged Man. Fucking brilliant. God take, God give.

If you end up liking JMT shit, this is mandatory:

Also glad someone pointed out Blu & Exile, that album really impressed me.

An underrate solo album from Wu member Masta Killa:

Sorry, their album is the epitome of mediocrity to me. Float my boat it does not. Coincidentally my little brother can't get enough of them.

I don't know how you couldn't recommend Illmatic, the only album I keep going back to. Nas has a few other great albums such as It Was Written, Stillmatic, etc. I also like Lupe Fiasco a lot, all his mixtapes and albums are good.

This is a great thread. Some good stuff I never heard of that I am legally downloading tonight.

I went to amoeba yesterday to cop this album. It's pretty damn good.

UGK. All the fucking time. For fucking life. Ridin' Dirty will change your life.

Also New Kingdom because not only is Paradise Don't Come Cheap probably my favorite rap album ever, it's actually totally underappreciated.

this is the truth. don't forget super tight, that is just as good in my mind.

Mine too! But it's easier to ease into those country rap tunes with Ridin' Dirty, then work through the rest of the catalog which is all really good. Even the solo albums. (I think I'll put on Pimpalation right now, in fact)

True :D

Ghostface Killah's Fishscale

Fishscale and More Fish were bad and I'm a big Ghost fan. Even Bulletproof Wallets was better. I'm glad Big Doe is great. Classic late 90's era Ghost came back. I mix that up with some tracks off Pretty Toney and everything is banana nutriment.

!!!??? When did this drop??

MM3 dropped 3-4 weeks ago but it's a DJ yelling all over it

Get MM 3.5. It has no DJ and a couple of bonus tracks.

crazy how different our opinions are on that ghost. while the bdr was good, it doesn't hold a candle to fishscale (imo, of course).

This was one of my favorite albums of 2007 and is highly recommended and of course the classic Illmatic. Also, check out Pharcyde - Bizzare Ride II the Pharcyde.

To me, it's the best damn hip hop album that's been released this year. Jeru is fucking amazing.

"Most of these so called conscious rappers are my bastard children" :D

I'd also like to recommend the promo CD "My Life" by Kool G Rap, very very nice.
