How can Microsoft attract non-Americans with the Xbox One?

Really? Here in the UK they've got apps for Sky (not on PS3), Lovefilm, BBC iPlayer, 4oD and other UK-specific services, alongside Netflix and the usual stuff.

Yes in the UK.

Netflix has like 30 millions subs worldwide. 29 in the us and 1 in the uk.

All the other countries in the EU have their own services that MS simply can't get their heads around.

If a company like Netflix that is 100% specialized in this can't successfully launch in continental Europe, how do you think MS is able to sell this media box there with no content?

I'm not sure what else MS could add. It's not like Hulu and HBO are available outside the US, so of course they can't add them in other regions.
Take a guess what's available in the rest of Europe.

MS stated they will launch it out globally over time.

That's PR. A few countries across the world that matter to them, and they'll call it "global."

The reality is that tv and movie content licenses are very complicated, especially from country to country, and while Sony relies on having a global market since Japan isn't enough and therefore attempts these deals, MS makes its deals in just a few big markets to maximize profits with minimal effort.

Seriously the only content available on my current dashboard is advertising for a local bank I already had an account with. Oh and that muzu thingy which is pretty much youtube but with ads.

Since the other similar thread just popped up to the frontpage again allow me to copy&paste my answer. They should merge them but I forgive the mods for not catching it in the midst of the neogaf xbone madness.

It's even better a lot of broadcasting companies in europe use special "digiboxes" (Read shitty dvr with cheap hardware they can rent out for a ridiculous fee) that use non standard encryption, and a custom java based ui. They will all be useless when paired with the next xbox. Furthermore having been a resident of a small european country I know how hard Microsoft has previously failed at getting deals done. The dashboard for my xbox360 is a fucking farce, it has no content, it has none of the apps the Americans so proudly proclaim as being awesome, it's a ghost town filled with advertising. If this is their entire strategy count me the fuck out, my cable box is fine and if they do ever switch to a standard encryption scheme I will use the smart tv I've owned for the past 2 years.

So I hope they enjoy being kings of their continent I guess.
The thing Microsoft is up against is licensing content. None of the cable companies or content providers in Europe give two fucks. We have no netflix and our equivalents are pure garbage, netflix has been trying to launch here since 2006 and still hasn't succeeded. The fuck makes juan think he'll pull off what that company has been trying since forever. It's like they've decided they want the tv market and decided the only way they could do it without actually paying money for broadcasting licenses etc. was to make the console equivalent of a middleman.

The tech segment on the morning radio in switzerland usually follows the press release and runs with the PR stuff that comes with them.

They've been very negative of the One reveal, because of the very reasons OP mentioned. It's a console designed to do and combine many thing....90% of which will not be available or relevant in countries outside the US.

[edit] or UK...

I would be surprised if SkyGo doesn't make it to PS4/Vita, it's too big a market to ignore for Sky and MS won't want to pay what is being asked. If they were then they would have had a News Corp executive on stage last night. All of those other channels and more are available on PS3 and I don't see that changing for PS4. In fact, Sony will probably be in a better position with PS4 as they won't be playing catch up in the UK this time.

The only misstep from Sony has been to make GT6 for PS3 instead of PS4. If GT6 were available on PS4 shortly after launch then XB1 would have no chance of getting a foothold anywhere in Europe, UK included. FIFA 14 Ultimate Team exclusive content is not going to cut it.

Even the Kinect by itself is too big for Japan.

Even with the enhanced lens, it's still going to require a play area that is too big for Japan. It'll be interesting to see what MS does at TGS this year.

I never said that I didn't see Sony thoroughly supporting this region with these apps, just that the notion of Microsoft supporting it less than Sony wasn't correct in the UK.

As for the rest of Europe, I really don't know. I'm still waiting for someone to answer my question above, listing specific countries with services that are available on PS3 but not 360. It seems everyone is shouting a lot but nobody will provide concrete info to back up what they're saying.

I really want to understand this further.

Can anyone list a few non-English speaking countries and explain the local services that are available on PS3, but not 360?

This is a genuine question btw, as I don't know the answer.
Well, I'm not sure what services are available on Xbox as I'm not a gold subscriber anymore, but here's the problem I have:
Microsoft expects European customers to pay way more for Xbox Live Gold while not offering any additional services. As someone who knows what kind of things the US is getting, it's really hard to justify spending more money on XBL Gold than US people while less benefits.

If Microsoft simply acknowledged that not all deals are affecting Europe in a positive way and thus lowered the Xbox Live price then the situation would be completely different. However, charging the same entrance fee (even more, actually) while not offering the same things is wrong.

As for a couple of services: Pretty much every TV station in Germany now has some kind of on demand thing on their website (free). Microsoft could figure out deals with them to deliver that kind of content.

I'm still waiting on E3 before my verdict. For now the XboxOne has yet to impress me. The TV/Movies/Music/Etc they showed, won't do it for me for a simple reasons: It probably won't be available in Europa just like the X360. That and I honestly don't care about TV, it's been atleast 4 years since I last watched TV.

The only thing they showed and that we are certain to get in Europe are the games. Yes the whole three games that they showed of which one was a new IP. Which looked pretty good for the 60 seconds orso trailer. Forza can be pretty interesting to play with the new triggers. But calladuty? No, it looked like a mediocre current gen game with "impressive" N64 style AI.

As for the new kinect. Just like the current kinect I'll puth a cloth over it when I don't use it.

Xbl should be free in Europe for starters. The paywall for nothing is ridiculous.

Plus if MS' focus is so much on media and tv, but doesn't actually deliver that outside of the us then you would feel like youre buying half a console.

Imagine doing that for 25 countries in Europe.

Now imagine those apps behind a paywall.

GT and free online gaming. Both of them are killer apps for Europe that MS don't offer.

the thing is, you're supposed to plug you cable/iptv box to your One by HDMI, so I guess everyone in the EU who has a TV subscription can use the X1 features?

correct me if I'm mistaken, please

MS would have to pay the likes of Virgin and Sky a lot of money or include a Freeview HD tuner and RF in to offer these features in the UK. The situation in Euroland is even worse tbh. All of those enhanced TV features are essentially US exclusive. If they had made a deal with the Premier League and Sky to offer exclusive EPL games on XB1 then I could see it taking off over here, but honestly Sony are more likely to make that deal than MS right now.

In Italy they have a partnership with Mediaset Premium, a service that's crap unless all you want is watch soccer.
In Germany we got a simplified version of ZDF Mediathek which is available online for free. The 360 equivalent lacks most of the content anyway. But it's not just the TV services. For example : Remember Inside Xbox? Because compared to what the US, UK and even Japan got, the german one was laughable. We got new content every 2-3 weeks while the other 3 where updated on a daily base.

I wouldn't care for this stuff, if I hadn't to pay for gold to play online. If I have to, I want at least the same value for my money as US or UK residents.

Nothing they are doing the best job they can to lose the US markets, so they might as well lose any other market to.

Fuck all.

Actually, no. They'll partner with Sky in the UK. And gouge everyone.

Gouge is right! Sky...the company that charges ÂŁ9.99......for 1 day....ONE DAY of sky sports, unlss you pay for the entire month.

maybe I got it wrong, but you can just plug your tv box into the HDMI In port

I agree, this is probably how it will work. Howeverererererere, what about all the functions that are already built into the sky/virgin media boxes in the UK? Like recording 3 channels while watching a 4th? Their OWN pretty slick TV guides, Catch up TV, etc etc etc. Will all of that just work as is. Would I just be able to tell the Xbox "Xbox, record BBC 1, BBC 2, and Dave, while I watch Discovery channel"?

As far as i can see it's just an overlay for the content feed coming in. If you want to control your DVR then you will have to access the DVR menu not the XBOne menu.

There was an article comparing it to GoogleTV saying they work the same way. HDMI overlays. It seems a little bit clunky to me so i'm waiting for more news and details.

I might not get to see the 63 stream services, I might not get to enjoy all ( any ) the TV features, will most definitely not see much of the sport integration but between the Danish netflix, which is renowned to be a nuclear wasteland of old shit with a tiny, tiny selection and Microsoft's own EU video store which can be sifted through in about a minute - I feel well catered for.

They'll have Foxtel streaming here in Australia, which is actually genuinely useful and seems better than whatever that pointless crap they're doing in the US is. Although of course you can already do that on 360.

Japan will be hilarious, if they even bother launching there.

They won't do anything for us. Their presentation made it quite clear that with the US only tv service at launch and the NFL partnership that they want to cater to the US. I'm not going through this crap again with them so I will be getting a PS4 as that seems more like it's going to be for gamers.

I think MS won't really give so much effort for countries outside america. Much like Nintendo giving all it's effort in Japan. Sony wants world domination.

It's been a while since I've had a Sky subscription, but the regular boxes don't have HDMI, right? And no Sky box uses HDMI-CEC, which Xbox One uses for controlling TV, so presumably that's out. Even if Sky does comply with that standard why would anyone who pays ÂŁ50 per month then pay an extra ÂŁ4.99 to access content they're already paying for when the Xbox One won't be able to use certain Sky features?

Uh, weren't you guys listening?

FIFA Ultimate Team is exclusive, at least for a while! Enjoy!

Some Ultimate Team content is exclusive, not Ultimate Team itself.

So..

Nintendo - Japan
Microsoft - USA
Sony - World Domination

For me as a European the new Xbox didn't attract me at all. To much all-in-one crap. I already have a media player with all my movies. I just simply asked for a next-gen console that can do games.... and all I got was a lousy multimedia-machine (until now).

Hopefully they show a good lineup of games on the E3.
