How can Microsoft attract non-Americans with the Xbox One?

I really want to understand this further.

Can anyone list a few non-English speaking countries and explain the local services that are available on PS3, but not 360?

This is a genuine question btw, as I don't know the answer.

Does 360 have YLE Areena? It's the on-demand service of YLE (the finnish broadcasting service)

When they showed the logos for all of the companies they have deals with, I saw the Channel 4 On Demand logo and I think the BBC iPlayer. So for the UK I guess whatever online TV services are available in UK will wind up on the XBox. But I'm not sure if the RTE and TV3 Player will pop up for Ireland.

I'm really curious how that live TV stuff will even work here in Germany. At least in the past few years there was a trend to include all sorts of tv receivers (satellite/cable/terrestrial) in the TV itself. We don't do cable boxes or external sat boxes anymore. So there is no tv box to plug in the Xbox One...And TVs don't have HDMI outputs...It's beyond weird.

It really depends on the market. Specifically from Sony in Portugal we have the MUBI service (independent films) and Vidzone (music videos).
And it's not just services, but also local artists in karaoke games and localization efforts for games overall. Sony has these even for small European markets.

Regarding streaming services like Netfilix, in Portugal cable tv companies have a monopoly on licencing content so we won't see services like that in the near future. I can barely believe we manged to get Spotify.

Phil Harrison's main role is to commission and oversee the creation of games and content specifically for the European market. Interestingly, EyeToy, Buzz and Singstar were all huge hits in Europe - commissioned by him. If Phil has still got it, then it could help Microsoft's fortunes in this region.

Weren't games like Lair also commissioned by him? Meaning, he could pick a winner, or a loser.

One thing strikes me: I was wondering if the TV features might require Gold, but if that's the case I don't think the BBC services can legally be on it, and that would be a huge blow to the functionality over here.

I've been wondering this since the reveal.

The announcement screamed "USA only" in about a hundred different ways. Yes there's FIFA and Call of Duty, but that's nothing new and exclusive.

At the moment I really can't see why many anyone outside the US would even consider buying one.

good games... that's all.

also, get rid of that no-used game bullshit. In most of the countries outside of the US, new games are fucking expensive.

Games. Regardless of how bad Fable 3 was, if Fable 4 is handled well i'd buy the system for it. Software always outshines hardware.

On that note, where's black and white 3, Lionhead?!

Just hope for good first party games :/

If 360 is anything to go by, gold will cost the same or more outside of USA and get a lot less out of it.

I don't think they care about Japan anymore and the rest of the World (Europe, South America) can easily be charmed with FIFA + COD/HALO.

Of course, the Xbox will never sell as much in those places as it does in the US, but MS seems OK with that approach.

I don't think MS cares too much about markets outside the US. Sony has them beat pretty much everywhere but the US.

If the past console generation is anything to go by, Microsoft generally only gives a shit about English-speaking audiences.

They can't. It isn't meant for them

This

How are you going to sell a always connect, anti consumer/anti used games, where most content is catered to Americans with NFL features and more shooters to Europeans? Much less Japanese?

Its clearly meant for US and maybe UK, without a 1,5 year head start and a huge price advantage that 360 had over PS3, they have no chance. FIFA is not going exclusive, Gran Turismo 6 is probably coming to PS4 or at least GT7. So far not a single product announced is going to appeal to the average Japanese gamer, the Wii U struggles there, did 6k last week and has Dragon Quest 10, Monster Hunter and 2D Mario released, how is Microsoft going to get even above 1k sales? With what? Halo tv show? NFL football?

I don`t want and like the new xbox. I mainly play on the PC and plan to buy the PS4 for Final Fantasy, JRPG and other exclusive stuff.

Most of their TV services won't be available here unless they make some kind of deal with the cable companies (unlikely) so...I think there's only the games to talk about. But they didn't show anything that made me go WOW and on top of that there's that fee thing and the always online thing.

I will not buy one.

By bringing you closer to your TV!

In all honesty, if their event was any indicator, they arent planning on doing anything special for international audiences for a while.

Games. After E3 we will see if they have enough for people to care

Yeah, as a Canadian, I find it hard to get excited about anything that was announced. All of the TV stuff and NFL content deals and everything else won't work in Canada.

Plus, if their track record is anything like what it was for the 360, they're not in any rush to improve the situation.

If they still require XBL Gold to use other subscription services like Netflix which I can use for free on pretty much any device, there's nothing at all to be excited about.

This seems appropriate.

Same deal, I greatly preferred my 360 to the PS3 overall this gen but paying the same price for LIVE to effectively subsidize the extra services Americans get rubbed me the wrong way.

I don't care about paying for LIVE and can't wait for the tears when Sony pulls the same deal this gen.

Outside of that I probably would still go with Xbox One. But it looks like PS4 will get my moulah

Pretty stupid business decision. That Sony has a firm grip on outside US markets shouldnt mean they shouldnt be trying there very best.

I mean, i live in the netherlands, and i read in an article the other day Apple is doing 2.5 billion euros a month in the benelux (belgium, netherlands, luxembourg) maybe not a fair comparission but i mean there is a lot of money here for microsoft.

Let us first figure out how they will attract Americans.

This.
As an American I am having a hard time finding something (from the reveal) that I care about. Let alone trying to come up with reasons why countries like Japan should even care.

Exactly. I'm a flag-waving NFL-loving TV-watching American and I have zero interest in the thing.

All of this.

I don't know why people are just assuming that Americans are going to buy this thing in droves. I'm an American who loves sports and I hate what I've seen so far.

If they really want to get some sales in Japan they just need to put this on the front of it:

It'll sell immediately.

Fake edit: It didn't help the poor vita though, so who knows.
