How cannonically fast is Sonic? [Asking for documents and proof.]

Alright, basic typical internet argument between Flash and Sonic. So I'm asking for help on documenting and proving Sonic's max speed. I know there have been statements in the games and comics, so any contribution would help.

In an old sonic cartoon he races against a metal dog that runs 1000 miles an hour and sonic is faster. That's all I got.

There's no way you can win that battle if you are debating in Sonic's favor. Flash is absolutely broken in terms of max speed.

No matter what you find the flash is faster.

I think in some comics they have him going FTL. (He hits his shadow or something.)

From the Sonic Wikia:
"It is unknown how much faster Sonic can run beyond Mach 1, though it is on various occasions assumed that he can. In Sonic Battle, it is stated that he can move several times the speed of sound and when the Final Egg Blaster was about to fire, Sonic defeated Ultimate Emerl in less than 30 seconds. It is also believed that Sonic can move faster while in spinball form than running, possibly even reaching the speed of light as seen in Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Heroes where he could utilize the Light Speed Attack and the Light Speed Dash to achieve light speed movements. Also, in Sonic Unleashed, the Checkpoints, which measure his speed (SPD) in-game, can clock Sonic going over 2,800 SPD; in comparison, the Light Speed Dash measures 396 SPD. This suggests that Sonic can move at speeds far greater than the speed of light."

He couldn't chase Eggman for the most part, so...

Indeed. That fat man is fast

My knowledge of Sonic is (thankfully) slim but I recall in Generations Tales spouting some bullshit about Sonic being able to run so fast he could open rifts in time.

So greater than the speed of light, I suppose.

He can run faster than mach 1 which is canon by Sega.

If you want to go by the comics then he's pretty much like The Flash. In other words, he's as fast as what the writers or plot requires.

Sonic runs on water in quite a few games, if you know his weight you can probably calculate from that.

IIRC SEGA actually gave some guidelines on Sonic and his friends awhile back. Sonic is the only one allowed to have the highest top speed so not even Shadow is allowed to share that spotlight.

but shadow is the ultimate life-form

Maybe in other areas. In terms of star ratings 5 being the fastest and 1 being the slowest, Sonic is a 5 and Shadow is 4, but Shadow does have more power than Sonic since he knows how to fight and his chaos powers are definitely much stronger than Sonic's. Sonic is a purely speed focused characters in every aspect.

If you're trying to compare Sonic to fucking Flash, you're wasting your time. Flash follows insane comic book logic. The idea of "sensible limits/restrictions to superpowers" doesn't apply to him.

I just won the argument.

[but seriously I would like to get the in game statements, because I have read that they've declared his speed a couple times.]

Well... In one issue of Archie comics, Sonic ran so fast he gained new forms beyond Hyper Sonic (though these never made an appearance again) and when he reversed whatever was happening in his world in a Superman-esque way he somehow got taller and gained green eyes.

Game theories being wrong again... first of all they made one mistake:
Using classic games to measure up his speed by taking Modern Sonic to measure up size.
Classic Sonic is smaller than Modern Sonic.

Unless I'm missing something obvious how does that make a difference in the large scale? Even if Sonic is a bit shorter it's not going to make him jump from 10 m/s to the speed of sound.

Flash is like that kid at recess who always shouts that he's immune to bullets, or suddenly has a shield, or manages to dodge your bullet, when playing cops and robbers.

Being faster than light is sooo nonsense.

That just show how shaky are their calculations. Add up more and more mistakes and you have a huge mistake.
Even though I still like this show and find it entertaining.

No arguing that little things add up and their shaky logic and overanalyzation, hence why I specifically said in the large scale. If their math is wrong, which is highly likely, I still wouldn't specifically say their point is wrong. Purely on the game evidence.

really cringe-worthy to read.

this is probably something that the creators and sonic team don't give a shit about.

yet somehow, someone somewhere is serious about these things.
