How could Microsoft knock it out of the park this E3?

For me personally

"Early" launch in Sweden "Available after this presentation ends."
Free online multiplayer and media app functionalities, subscription becomes like PS+, but cheaper
Cheaper Kinect-less alternative
DOA6, NG4, DOAXBV3 shown looking jawdroppingly amazing with the new engine and soft body physics. Show ends with "One more thing... Team Ninja is now a Microsoft first party developer. And one more thing, they just hired a new president, I think you might know him... *Itagaki enters the stage with an evil grin* he starts speaking "Yes, I'm back! And here's our latest game, available... Today!" *Devil's Third trailer runs. Looks mind-blowing. Crowd goes insane.*

;)

Talk about games and exclusives, Admit they got it wrong and they want there core fans back who switched.

Add more value too Xboxlive when your rival is giving insane value for theres.

A new Xbox thats cheaper.

Stop thinking the whole world thinks like an american and is american.

Completely knock it out of the park?

games games games

Drop to $399 with Titanfall (kinect or no kinect)
Quantum Break Demo, and September Date
Sunset Overdrive demo... but delayed til 2015
Forza Horizon 2 demo
Battlefront/Battlefield Demo
Don't talk about TV
If no kinectless bundle, demo something that gives core gamers a reason to plug kinect in

end the show with Halo 2 and a small sneak peak of halo 5

Haha what? That sounds underwhelmingly realistic. Nothing about that would "knock it out of the park".

To really get people going, they need something big and unexpected. A major third party series announced as Xbone exclusive. A new Platinum game. A new Crimson Skies.

It's impossible for MS to knock it out of the park. They're so far behind with such a poor team that they would be happy to hit a few bunts and steal a base. Frankly I'd be pretty surprised if they show up with a single interesting exclusive. Although the late launch in tier 2 countries could be indicative of a relaunch of sorts.

New game reveals, great demos of upcoming games, and a price drop (make current Xbox One model $400 and introduce a 1 TB version for $500).
I disagree, a 1TB sku shouldn't be $100 more expensive than the 500GB sku. You can get a 3TB drive for $100. That said, knowing console makers(and MS) if it gets announced it most likely will be $100 more expensive.
If Xbox1 has to make concessions to reach 1080p and possibly 60fps on a TV, I don't want to imagine what it would look like when it's surrounding your face. Maybe the AR solution is the right way to go? I just don't see how buying Rift would make sense for Xbox1 as is.
Every console has to make concessions to reach 1080p and 60fps.
I´d expect these at TGS, if indeed the rumored launch in Japan is just after it.
Agree, TGS seems like a better place to reveal those titles. As long as they get revealed(and make it to release) I'm happy :)

MS were the first ones to put a headset/micro in every box, thus helping the adaption of social gaming.
Now they´re packing a Kinect in every box. Benefits wont be visible so soon.
So in the end: I don´t give a fuck for MS bottom line, so I hope for a 100$ price drop, with Kinect still in the box.

Agree, TGS seems like a better place to reveal those titles. As long as they get revealed(and make it to release) I'm happy :)

Without any Japan centric games, they need not bother to even launch there - so I´m optimistic.

Slicker than PS4.

Kinect Optional.

True exclusives. The Xbox One still has better exclusives than the PS4, at least in my opinion.

No (but subjective) certainly not slick enough to warrant space in my media cabinet, I'll wait for a revision.

You have to buy it, I was implying they make the purchase optional.

I think I worded my comment wrong. I meant they needed to announce more exclusives in addition to those they already have. There is a perception (right or wrong) that MS relies on one or two 1st party franchises, whereas Sony invest more in new IP.

People have been mentioning how the PS4 is supply constrained, but when my parents visited I went to all of the electronic stores. Target had two, and even walmart had three.

Look at how many they've sold, and then look at the numbers you've seen in store. Is 2-3 units in a few stores locally an indication of mass availability? The console is virtually sold out online. Amazon just recently got a big shipment in. So yes, the PS4 is still supply constrained, even in the US. Here in Canada, the stock is dry as a desert.

If Microsoft dumps a lot of money for exclusives made by third-parties, my interest will be very small in those games. I bought an Xbox 360 based on some of the great exclusives they acquired early on from third-parties, and after a certain point they simply stopped financing those types of games and I was left with a console that, in terms of exclusives that interest me, was useless.

So even if they announce some games that interest me from third-parties, that alone won't be enough to convince me to purchase the console, I will wait a few more years to see if that money-support is continuous instead of just an attempt to try to grab a slice of audience.

A price-drop would help drive sales, but that would be irrelevant without good software to accompany it. Dropping the Kinect would earn a few points in my book.

Unlikely: Not having a healthy-dosage of time focusing on dude-bro "awesome" sports action features or highlighting the next Call of Duty

Changing Xbox Live's service into something more lenient in terms of online usage would be nice (hah, this is so unlikely it's funny but hey, this is speculation), but I honestly think Microsoft's position on this is something along the lines of: "If we've fooled them this far, no need to change it now.", and given that Sony made it's online gaming paid for, they have even less of a reason to do so.

Even more unlikely: not using "the cloud" and "experience" once throughout the entire presentation.

Nearly impossible: Rare will start developing sequels or new games that aren't focused around Kinect or the avatars that live up to the quality standards of old.

This is just slightly more unlikely than the previous: Shenmue 3 announcement and exclusivity deal

Post mortem: I swear I started this response as a way to try to devise ways in which Microsoft could impress me, but along the way it turned into bad cynical comedy. I apologise.

I agree that it shouldn't be $100 more but that's the only possibility I see in terms of getting the (500 GB) Xbox One to $400 with kinect while at the same time not losing that much money. $500 for a 1 TB model would be attractive to many, especially the ones who are going digital.

Heck, if they want to go cut throat, release a 250 GB model for $350 too. Would require a lot of space management but some wouldn't mind it -- especially with the external HDD update coming soon (or just the people who don't play that many games per year -- just a few sports and shooters).

I'm not saying it would be complete megaton as such, but I would really like to see "Project Milo" revived for the new Kinect, as I really liked that concept. Now the console and camera have more power to bring true the vision, and Microsoft need to give us justification for the Kinect, Project Milo is an already existing and quite popular concept we're familiar with

Incredibly unlikely since Forza Horizon 2, but Project Gotham Racing would be a huge step in getting a lot of hardcore fans excited.

That's my 2 suggestions, but Sony are coming in strong already and the pressure is on Microsoft to show that up until now they've not been ahead, they need to show signs they are going strong and not far behind. I don't want to see a great focus on the non-gaming related apps, except when it'll be a big firmware announcement, similarly if Sony did the same with announcing 2.00 or whatever during the time and it has the suspend/resume function for example.

People have been mentioning how the PS4 is supply constrained, but when my parents visited I went to all of the electronic stores. Target had two, and even walmart had three.

That's true in some areas. In some other parts of the world retailers can still practice price hiking due to low supply.

Wasn´t there some speculation, that due to the esram MS would have a lot of leeway regarding die shrinks, and thus getting the price faster down?

Never said they don't I'm talking in the specific case of Xbox1 where concessions are being made to get just 1080p or 60fps on a tv let alone for VR. I guess it's a moot point if they get it to work eventually more power to them.

Wasn´t there some speculation, that due to the esram MS would have a lot of leeway regarding die shrinks, and thus getting the price faster down?

Not sure. I would assume that they planned out how to have price drops while keeping kinect though months (or even years) before the Xbox One launched.

I would hope that they would have realized that they can't make a console stay at $500 for the majority of a gaming gen.

Pre-planning a price drop via hardware specs doesn't seem like Microsoft at all. It's more like they make consumer hardware that no one really wants (Surface, Zune, etc.) and then they have to drop the price to be competitive when sales are flat. The Xbox One is more successful than those other examples to be sure, but given their strategy and messaging, they were confident in trying to sell their underpowered box for a premium price.

Apologies, must have misunderstood you.

Milo is popular for all the wrong reasons, it was completely made up of lies. Also Milo was introduced before all the NSA leaks came out, in that context it seemed like an exciting prospect, but do you really think that having a game in which a virtual character understands and interacts with you is a good product to launch with the current mindset and concerns that a lot of people have?

It would surely draw some attention, but ultimately I think it would be a very bad move for Microsoft to take. Not to mention Lionhead has their hands full already whor.. ahem, working on the Fable spinoffs.

More TV. In fact maximum TV, watch TV in your TV whilst watching another TV. Watch Sixteen TV's at once. Watch TV whilst watching yourself watch TV using the Kinect. Watch someone else watching you watching them watch TV.

Its the only way to get that much larger TV audience. I cant see it failing to be honest.

Games Games Games.
A diverse lineup in genres and games was something that got me interested in the 360 back then and would get me interested in the X1.
A pricecut or a kinectless SKU is another point.

Bring a new xbox 2 with a decent GPU (above 7870 / greater than 2 TF) and GDDR5. Put in PowerPC CPU extra so its backward compatible with 360.

Drop Kinect, make xbox 2 US$ 399

All new games have an select option for 1080p60 or xbox one settings or 360 interface.

Or offer an upgrade motherboard to xbox one.

It would then be in the race for next 5 years.

not going to happen

But I would buy it...

Here in Portugal i see them stacked everywhere, our economy it's just too broke, day 1 console's are becoming a luxury here!

If we believe recent leaks Microsoft will knick it out the park:- for shooter fans.

Outside of that, there is nothing rumoured that suggests to me their console is even worth considering till 2015.

I´m pretty sure, every manufacturer planes the lifetime cycle of their product. If this plan comes to fruit, now that's a different pair of shoes.
I think MS thought to sell the XB1 as close to the build price as possible. A 500$ price tag doesn´t look to outlandish, compared to how many consoles Sony sold last gen at or around this ASP. And I´d guess that a lot of this planning has been done independently, meaning before they knew their competitors price tag and power.

Drop the price to $399

Else all the other efforts and game launches will go waste. Selling lower horse power console for higher price.. is not going to get them any where. It is a lost cause till the price drops.

I own a One and I completely agree that Kinect adds very little. Think it'd be a smart move to dis-Kinect that while they've still got Titanfall momentum. I also own a Wii U and I'm not crazy about the Gamepad, and a PS4 and I hate the DS4's trackpad. /Shrug.

Well, now...

Imagine they made online gaming free, what a sucker punch that would be for Sony. Pigs will fly but you never know. I think they could change Gold into an actual content sub like Netlfix, Spotify etc. rather than a locked features sub. You pay more monthly to access NFL stuff, Xbox TV shows etc.

Halo 2 Opening Demo and it''s the lost E3 level re-imagined. Halo 5 Beta.

Great new games and IPs without using the crutch of buying third party support.

They will rest on their old stable though, some shit Gears Teaser (It's YEARS away still), some Halo stuff etc.

They haven't learned yet so in their head they have no reason to change their presentation. I could see them jumping on the promote the indies train though.

Realistically, they could announce a lot of exclusive games and have a good show. But I don't think that would be enough for me to buy one.

I think for them to "knock it out of the park" for me (and a rather large part of Gaf) they would need a price drop and/or a kinect-free version, PLUS a lot of unique exclusive games.

I also think if they removed media services from behind the XBL Gold paywall and improved the "games for gold" quantity and quality of games (more somewhat recent releases on the list) that would go a long way in creating some goodwill.

edit: I don't realistically expect a kinect free version this year. I could see a price drop considering they're already offering a pack in game for $500.

I can't see them announcing a Kinectless SKU at E3. That would basically be admitting defeat at their biggest event of the year. They're going to want their message to be positive, I doubt they'll put a spotlight on a product that almost no one likes by admitting no one wants it.

Could be difficult, nickle-diming the media, ads and services turned out to be a decent cash cow for them.

What if they show the fortaleza vr glasses and they use kinect which is the real reason they don't want to take kinect out of the box?

This is what they would have to do to get me to buy one: Kinectless SKU, along with a patch for all games that use voice commands to just use the frickin' mic from the headset, a series of Japanese exclusives like the 360 had early in its life, and some Games with Gold titles for the Xbone...

Of course, none of this will happen, but it's what would be needed to get me to buy into the Xbone...and this is coming from a diehard 360 owner.

As much as we are all like "KINECT LESS", it doesn't need it. Its like people calling for a Tabletless Wii U, it is highly pointless. A price drop would be embarrassing for them considering it only just launched and it would need some mega promotional stuff for existing owners.

1. Needs to start offering stuff to make having a "day one" console more then just a pretty achievement.
2. Sunset Overdrive and other games we saw last year but in more depth with release dates and such.
3. Forza Horizon 2, it needs to be big, it needs to be bold and revive the Forza series after the disappointing Forza 5. They need to go give it some life, and Horizon is what did it last time, it will be interesting to see how well they can do Horizon 2. Maybe like that Ubisoft title which has driving all over America, to give the sense your driving to this big event? Or something.
4. Games for Gold for Xbox One.
5. Smart Glass Xbox One titles.
6. Kinect titles and features which make having it built in worth it.
7. New IPs.

A price drop would be embarrassing for them considering it only just launched and it would need some mega promotional stuff for existing owners.

Didn´t Sony do exactly this with the PS3? No one operates in a vacuum, you gotta react to what the market says.

-Cheaper model with and without Kinect
-Quit money hatting and make their own games.
-Let Rare make a game that isn't Kinect based.
-Apologize for treating their customers like retards with Cloud talk.

As someone who's planning to get a PS4 the only thing that might change my mind is if they announced that No Man's Sky will be a console exclusive. God I would be annoyed by that.

Star Wars Battlefront timed exclusive

- Timed Star Wars Battlefront DLC

A new Ghost Recon game that is a timed Xbox exclusive.

New games with some timed exclusive launches, new additions for Xbox Live and little to no "TV! TV! TV!" stuff.

Why are people supporting this? It's one of the worst things, that happened in the history of game development, alongside with timed (exclusive) DLC...

As a developer, I wouldn't support this, because you are just splitting your potential player base and make people angry...

not going to happen

But I would buy it...

That's even more unrealistic than my predictions, and I put Shenmue 3 in them.

I don't think that Microsoft will afford another 3rd party exclusive or even timed exclusive title. I also don't think that 3rd party want to make such deals since the Ps4 has definitely the bigger hardwarebase.

Microsoft has to do it on their own.

What I think will happen at E3:
-Forza Horizon 2 annoucement with gameplay footage.
-Halo 2 Anniversary annoucement.
-Sunset Overdrive gameplay
-Quatum Break gameplay
-Fabel Legends gameplay
-Halo5 announcement, no gameplay but some ingame graphics.

That already an amazing games showing.

What I hope will happen:
349$ kinectless SKU
Crackdown annoucement
RARE doing something without Kinect

What needed to happen for them to beat Sony:
-GTA 6 exclusivity
-COD and Titanfall 2 exclusivity
-FIFA and Madden exclusivity
-stacked GPU, infinite cloudpower
