How could Microsoft knock it out of the park this E3?

Just having a second SKU without Kinect that is cheaper and showing a few exclusives that are expected like Halo and Gears will be great for them.
DING DING DING

"B-b-but Kinect is an integral part of the console, you guys just don't understand it because you haven't tried it."

I think a lot of people would welcome an X1 if it's $399 and without Kinect.

Price match PS4 or lower if Kinect-less SKU. This is a must unless they want to continue bleeding market share.

Lot's of games with a few megatons.

Show off "Power of the cloud" in a meaningful way. At the very least have some cool games running on dedis. Like Halo 2, Forza Horizon 2, also Minecraft and maybe Day Z or State Of Decay 2.

Project Fortaleza.

More good indie stuff. Have the "every box is a devkit" ready to roll this year with Unity as the new XNA.

Oh and obviously Banjo Threeie but that's a no brainer, right Microsoft? :)

There will be no indi revolution for kinect, indis want their games spread out over as many platforms as possible. They are not going to waste their time and effort on a kinect only game nor will they add functionality. That would have already happened if it were to be the case.

Yet we're already have a game like FRU, which uses the Kinect as a key mechanic of the game. I think you are too quick to jump on what an indie will do or wont do. MS will inevitably make Kinect available on PC as well, so they could always see a release there eventually.

1. Major killer app, ether a out of left field exclusive, or something that just majorly surprises.

2. Price drop.

3. Sony completely fumbles the ball, makes no exciting announcements.

There are indie games being made for kinect though so... yeah.

That's not to say there will be a "kinect indie revolution" though.

$100 price drop, unbundling Kinect. I'd buy one. Wouldn't mind trying out Killer Instinct, and I'm sure there will eventually be more bone exclusives I'd like to play.

I don't think Kinect-less SKU is enough to get them there. I'm thinking for $299, a Xbox Core, as opposed to the All in One Entertainment Center Xbox One. No HDMI passthrough, no Kinect, anything they can cut to make the insides cheaper.

And of course Microsoft could drop a ton of money on developers to get big exclusives - could, but won't, as investors are already itching to dump the Xbox division. I don't see Microsoft pouring more money into a segment that is already making investors unhappy.

I'd take this. It's not like I'm gonna use it anyway, Microsoft can't get deals with the vast majority of cable providers in EU. It's just added crap that a large portion of people will never get to use.

I think a $399 announcement is for certain with Kinect included

But:

-Announce that they've acquired Remedy, Crytek, and Insomniac, and that they're all developing new IPs exclusively for the XB1 (this is overzealous I know)
-Announce that 343 Industries is working on a new IP alongside Halo 5
-Halo 2 Anniversary is real and is built on the Halo 5 engine and the multiplayer beta for Halo 5 is inspired by Halo 2 and Halo 3's multiplayer.
-Sunset Overdrive gameplay
-Crysis: Insert Subtitle Here revealed, and is exclusive to XB1
-The Division gameplay
-Quantum Break gameplay demo and release date is slated for this year
-Titanfall co-op story DLC revealed
-Close with Gears of War tease

They really need to just go on a publishing spree for developers like Ninja Theory and Platinum Games. Everyone will love them for that.

-Big price drop would make them look so bad (but I guess if they remove Kinect it wouldn't look like they just admitted defeat).
-unless they are absolute ninjas at hiding internal stuff, they can't have many new ips outside of Halo,Gears and Fable being developed, since we know what most of their studios are doing already.
-Rare is irrelevant at this point, they are a Kinect games studio.

Things that could help their E3 presentation:
-Sunset Overdrive or Quantum Break gameplay that looks absolutely great.
-Announcement of money-hated game. This one is tricky, if its just something like hiring a third-party developer to make a new IP it won't make a big splash, there aren't many third party big franchises out there that it would be reasonable for them to money-hat with the smaller install base Xbone currently have so the best bet would be for them to reboot or remake some old franchise.
-Announcing that they formed/bought new studios and show the games they are working on.
-Some new tech (hard to convince people to buy an add-on after forcing them to get the Kinect).

They are in a very bad position, Sony has much more cards to play at E3:
-We don't know what Bend, Media Molecule, Quantic Dream, London, Guerrilla Cambridge, Santa Monica and Japan Studio are working on.
-Project Morpheus game announcements and demonstration on the on the show floor (OR steals the spotlight at everywhere they show up, the same might happen with Morpheus).
-More information on games like Uncharted 4, The Order, Deep Down, Lily Bergamo, Rime, etc.
-Ports of TLoU, Journey, Uncharted...
-PS4 indies.
-Vita related announcement and reveals like Gravity Rush 2, indie ports(Papers Please, Mincraft, etc), memory card price drop, etc.
-PlayStation Now and PlayStation IPTV.
-Crazy stuff like The Last Guardian, Agent, Crash, Shenmue.

why does everyone seem to want Kinect out? is it just the price or is it something else? I don't own an Xbox One but I think the Kinect is a pretty cool part of the console and I'm especially curious to see how it's used moving forward. it'd be a shame for them to remove it this early imo

I don't think Kinect is going anywhere but perhaps a price cut would be the biggest news for MS. And MS has to show why the Kinect is a part of the Xbox One. If they can't do that, they have to at some point make it optional.
Also MS should have an system update to be released right after or even during E3 adding DNLA, popular 360 apps etc and also show what Games For Gold will bring to Xbox One. And the bulk of their announcements should be 2014 related and finally have some surprises. Due to previous leaks we have an idea of what MS was previously planning.

If they want to knock it out of the park, they'd want to put down the limp dildo their swinging with atm and pick up a damn bat, crack some heads!

Do away with the live fee altogether, free online for all. Keep kinect but still reduce price of the machine by $100e, ontop of that announce several brand new IP's that can be played no where else but the XB1.

Just more games, really. Maybe a new, full-featured Civ game, exclusive to XB1. Edit: make Live Gold a better value proposition somehow.

They are in a very bad position.

[Assuming he's talking about MS] I don't understand why people keep saying that. They're not in a good position as Sony is with the PS4, but not necessarily in a "very" bad position. The WiiU and Vita are in a very bad position. They've sold a great deal of consoles [Xbox ones] in a small time frame and have had a decent line up of launch titles. Just because they're second place doesn't mean they're doing terribly. Probably not as good as they'd hope, but again it's just the start of the this gen.

The PS3 started off terribly and ended up being one of the best consoles with some amazing games.

EDIT: Answering OP's question, more games. The hardware revels were last E3, just show us you'll support the hardware.

geezes, some of you guys are really trying to garbage pack MS into the ground aren't you? So far I'm reading about a $299 system without kinect, which is still going to make MS eat a huge cost. On top of that, I think they are just going to pull games out of there arsenal this year so expect to hear about a new Gears of War. LOL

I don't expect MS to really put anything out of a hat this year, they are going to try pulling their past games first and then after all that, it could be anything.

Going by some ideas in this topic, if they ever did most of these right now (like a $299) which is a $200 price drop, be sure that after this set of consoles there would be no more Xbox in the future, they would pull out.

A price drop and good looking games you can't find anywhere else.

Heck, they might do fine even without a price drop, IF the games deliver.

The only way they can make a big mark is by opening the cheque book and making some well known games exclusives or at least timed exclusives.

That and revealing some new tech like Morpheus.

I've been an xbox fan since the first one, so a $399 price would get me to buy one. I love forza, they'll have another Horizon, and I'll want to play new Halos I guess. I just think it's an awful value at $500 since it's weaker and I don't give a shit about kinect or TV features.

Why are people supporting this? It's one of the worst things, that happened in the history of game development, alongside with timed (exclusive) DLC...

As a developer, I wouldn't support this, because you are just splitting your potential player base and make people angry...

I don't like it either but given the question asked in the opening post I think Microsoft needs to announce something big with the message "Play it first/only on the Xbox One" after it in order to "knock it out of the park" this year.

The last time I bought a console because of ONE game was 2006, Gears of War for Xbox 360. They would need a similar game changer for me to think about getting a second next gen console …

I would never buy an X1 for 399$ w/o kinect. I mean really, its the same as ps4 then, but less powerful. 350$ would be better. I don't expect them to drop kinect tho.

BTW who came up with the "X1 is 100$ more because of Kinect!" anyway? Didn't some dev say on reddit that it was closer to half the cost?

They should follow the same formula as last years when it was purely about games. They won E3 2013 in my eyes because of that and if they do it again then they'll be fine.

They could've won it, but the PS4 price point and DRM stuff lost it. I agree though they need to pack a bunch of game trailers like last year. I'll be easy to please. If Forza Horizon 2 and the Halo 2 remake are true and are coming out this year I'll be very happy. I LOVED Horizon it was the perfect racing game for me. Then convince us that Quantum Break will be good and give us a new Gears teaser. All that would make me happy. To knock it out of the park they'd need to follow all that up with an announcement for a robust NFL streaming partnership with NFL/Directv (no directv sub required and MS servers backing it up so the streams aren't awful like with past attempts), show us a killer looking new IP, then BAM an UNREAL TOURNAMENT reboot fast paced scifi shooters are back baby (this one's just for me), and then end it with a more extended Halo 5 trailer.

I don't really care about price point since I already have one, but if they can make a decrease work and it helps sales all the better. I want healthy competition from both Sony and MS.

Just go back to games for the dude bro fps guy. Halo, gears, and any other shooter. I like when Microsoft at least tries to cater to all different genres for gamers, even if they quickly abandon it. They quickly abandoned it with original xbox, and it wouldn't shock me if we see nothing but fps games at e3 this year for the One.

Either a Kinect-less box or a genuinely exciting reason to own Kinect.

Not sure the latter is possible for me so it's def the former. Looking for a Kinect less box at 399. And I want a new Halo, (not a Halo remake) at 1080p and 60 fps.

They hyped about the cloud so much last year. They need to show an example of what the cloud can do. Maybe an example scene from the next Halo that utilizes the cloud to help overcome console hardware limitation.

New exclusive 2. party games. Buy the IP (Crackdown/Quantum Break-style).

Tier 2 is lost. Don't talk about how proud you are to release it there 10 months late.

Surprise us with Shangheist (Black Tusk).

Crackdown 3. Like for realz. No tease, just do it. Full 3 minutes GAMEPLAY trailer.

Real exclusives, enough of these timed exclusives. They won't win you PS4 owners.

Be the publisher of Respawns next game.
Very unlikely...

Bring back Rare classics. Not just one, maybe two or three.

Change Xbox Live Gold. Make it a better service.

- Ditch Kinect
- Invest in more 1st party studios
- Unveil more exclusives from internal teams (partnerships with independent 3rd party developers doesn't count - ie. Crytek, Remedy, Insomniac).

I just want to see the games. Quantum Outbreak looks great already and i want to see more of that. And Gears and Halo with good competent graphics

Pricing it the same as the ps4 will at least take that one bullet point away though. I loved MS's games, xbla, Live was solid all generation and never got hacked, and I've got tons of achievements. I hate kinect, but keep it or not, I don't care, I just don't want to pay $500 for a console.

-Rare game that isnt Kinect related.....basically letting Rare do what they want...would be a great cold opener with a new Banjo Kazooie or something

Janitor is probably the only dude left at RARE from back in the day ;), unless he got some mad skillz its very unlikely we'll see anything worthwhile! Only thing left with that studio is the name...

Drop the price of their console to 299, and give rebates to early adopters. Anything else and I think they come across as really wishywashy. Don't forget, they didn't get to implement it, but they were trying to fuck over consumers with their visions of the "future". In my mind, they still need to do some pro-consumer things to balance out that ill intent.

- A new Rare Project that's isn't Kinect sports.
- Lost odyssey sequel or something in that old school JRPG vein.
-a great Star wars battlefront Demo.
- a new RPG, maybe even a first party Dark Souls clone.
-A demo of the NEW Halo game
- a couple of $20 arcade type games that look fun.
