How did Sunset Overdrive get so little GOTY talk?

Never played it (though I want to). Assume it's because the number of people who have played it is lower than some of the more popular GOTY candidates which were mostly 3rd party.

What a shit excuse.

Damn dude chill. I'm pretty sure all people mean is that more people would get exposure to it if it were not a console exclusive.

Personally I liked the game a lot but it's not GOTY material. But then honestly I feel like most of the games many considered GOTY candidates were overrated (i.e. Dragon Age).

South Park was easily the GOTY.

Open world game about killing stuff stylishly while maintaining momentum has traversal that often grinds you to a halt.

More people in the gaming community have a PS4 than an Xbone.
That makes a difference when looking at GAF voting, but it shouldn't matter for gaming publications in general. There were just some really strong offerings from Nintendo this year.

Last of us, journey, uncharted 2, super Mario Galaxy and bayonetta 2 all won being exclusives so being an xb1 exclusive isn't an excuse for it not winning. The game is a lot of fun but let's not get carried away it has its faults and there isn't anything standout or mind blowing about it. That is how I feel about most of Xbox exclusives, they are fun to play but don't seem like a lot of risk and effort went into them or anything unique about them. Quantum break and ori seem like good gets and those should have a decent chance this year depending on how they turn out

Yeah I'd say this was a huge factor in why I didn't enjoy it as much either. The idea of the game was clashing in a bad way with it's execution.

agree to disagree on the bolded, it is unique and different and IMO a risky game to make.

The game has its minor faults but the fun gameplay, scope, humor and music in a package that doesn't take itself too seriously was fantastic IMO. I played all the other contenders except Smash and Bayonetta 2 and SO blew them away....

I am not sure why posters are going "It's an Xbox One exclusive" route. A bunch of bans were handed earlier in the Bloodborne thread for the same kind of shit more or less. If it weren't more apparent, it adds nothing to the discussion other than some conspiracy theory melodrama.

Dragon Age: Inquisition, DKC:TF, Shovel Knight and others were better in the eyes of most in media?

It can always be a personal GOTY. Nothing wrong with that.

Should have played Smash and Bayo 2 then :P

It is my GOTY for sure.

That being said, I can see why it is not on everybody's list. The style is not for everyone, and there are some issues with the amount of content in the game (I thought It was a bit on the short side)

Still, it is the most fun I have had playing a game this year, so I would give it my vote!

I just started it this weekend and I'm having a crapload of fun with it. Awesome game with an amazing art style and the writing in the game is too notch. Reminds me a lot of the Jet Set Radio games of past. Overall so far it's just a damn fun game that I'm having a genuinely good time playing. Great palette cleanser from the street trash that most triple A games are now.

:lol

Bingo. Game tries way too hard with the memes and jokes too.

Yet it knocks it out of the park when it comes to gameplay and you know, actually being fun. The jokes were hit and miss but for the most part good, it didn't take itself seriously and that was just fine. GOTY for me without a doubt.

Great game. But I think the style and humor were take it or leave it. I personally dug the 4th wall breaking, over the top punk stylings. That said it just didn't click for a lot of people. I'm surprised it isn't more well regarded, but GOTY I can see being a hard sell for many.

Bayonetta 2 is one of the best character action games ever made. Sunset Overdrive is not even in the same league, and I enjoyed what I played.

Didn't get the chance to play Bayonetta 2, hoping to rectify that this year.

SO actually was my GOTY. I enjoyed its cheesy, self aware humour but I think that factor may have been what turned a lot of people off.

The press rated it in the low 80s on Metacritic. Why would they all of the sudden vote it the best of the year?

It was definitely my GOTY. The media GOTY is nearly always a multiplat though unless there is one game clearly heads and shoulders above everything else that year like TLOU.

Also, it didn't sell that well. I don't think most of the press even played it tbh.

Because imo and many others it's nowhere near GOTY material. A fun romp based on what I've managed to play but handily bested by many games this year.

I applaud all the new things it's doing and I think it's a fantastic game, however I can't get it to keep my attention! The combat just isn't as fun as the traversal and the game just keeps asking me to shoot stuff, which so far I haven't found amusing. Maybe others feel the same?

Then again, I've barely heard that talked about. Chief concern I've heard is that it missed on comedy for some. Maybe just 10 other games came out that were better.

Sunset got more awards than Donkey Kong and Shovel Knight. I think Dragon Age and Mordor are the better answers because they're the ones taking most of the awards.(especially Dragon Age)

I don't see why the humor turned folks off. The story is batshit insane and would be utterly ridiculous if it tried to take itself seriously lol

Anyone here who hasn't played it should do so just for the NeoGAF call out at the end lol

It's polarizing. Its easy to see how the humour can be a significant turn off for a bunch of people, gameplay and art style are amazing though. Anyway GAFs GOTY list was pretty eh IMO, top three were good but then Dragon Age, Mordor and Destiny just really ruined it for me.

Couldn't make it past the first 2 hours or so honestly. It was "OK" but the combat really didn't feel that great to me, the weapons you get access to at the beginning are also a complete snooze.

I found the game fun and interesting, but not to the level of hype it was being given. To me, the strongest point is the charm but that doesn't really mean much :X

Its an awesome game for sure, but its so niche. Plus its not a sequel, wasnt really hyped, and the story is corny (in a good way).

Plus its an XB1 exclusive which means its crap in the gaming world.

It was my GOTY (that voye might change when i finish dk:tf and bayo 2) it was easily the funnest game I played all year. I mean I played DA: I close to 70 hours..... but how much of that time was I acutally having fun? maybe an hour or 2 (romancing cassandra and maybe the first time I beat a dragon). But I had fun like 90% of the time I played SO.
It's really just a ton of fun to grind around shooting things, traversing, setting trap, etc.
The fact that I could make a reasonable fascimilie of my wife in the character creator was also a first and VERY welcome.
MY biggest gripe was that some of the side missions had you collecting stuff that totally breaks your momentum when you have to run around on the ground looking for some trash.....
But besides that it was definitely deserved more recognition.

Between this and R&C: ACiT Insomniac made some of my favorite games.
