How did Sunset Overdrive get so little GOTY talk?

Very similar games. But SO is far less boring, but not as pretty.

Agreed. Art wise SO is amazing, but technically it's pretty poor. By contrast SS is amazing looking, truly incredible, yet quite dull. To be fair though First Light helps rectify that quite a bit.

I do think the game was trying for something unique and really made it work. Insomniac games seem to end up being liked by me more than the average bear.

Saying a game didn't win GOTY because it was an exclusive? Come on now, this is a discussion of the game's merits, not a circlejerk thread.

Some impressions after playing 10+ hours with my friend:

+ Style and presentation are novel and fresh feeling
+ The game doesn't try to be serious
+ Dialogue is funny (at times)
+ Grinding & Gunplay is solid
+ Good weapon variety
+ Fun customization & power-ups
+ Fizzie is hilarious

- Traversal just feels clunky in general, especially transitions. For such a large element of the game, it should have been worked on more.
- Open world doesn't feel very populated
- Dialogue is crass and corny (at times)
- Repetitive missions
- Forgettable story

It's a solid game, but there's just not enough there to be considered a legitimate GOTY contender, even in a weak field like this year's. This might just be me, but I feel like a lot of the major reviewers were fawning over Sunset Overdrive because they were sick of the continued onslaught of grimdark militaristic shooters that we see so often. Much like the famous "I'm so f*cking sick of shooters" reviewer, the scores were somewhat a product of the environment than from the game itself.

For me I think it's because it was too short. That last group had like 2, maybe 3 missions tops. The traversal and stuff was amazing. But after I beat the game, it just felt like there was nothing else to do.

I am not sure why posters are going "It's an Xbox One exclusive" route. .

Since the general beating the Xbox brand took back around the XB1 reveal (very much deservedly so), there has been seemingly a rather prevalent "persecution complex" running amongst Xbox fans, wether on Gaf or other forums.

SO just didn't review well enough (MC average 81) to be considered for GOTY, regardless of anyone's opinion about it.

I put in 25 hours and still have 2 side quests available and tons of green challenge missions after I finished the main story

It's good but I feel no replay value from it. Dragon Age inquisition is my GOTY for 2014 but then again, I haven't played half of what 2014 has to offer.

However SSO is fun, exciting, loved the characters designs and the whacky weapons but Idk, it just wasn't GOTY for me.

Yeah I was hoping we would get an honest discussion of why it was IMHO a bit forgotten by the end of the year lists top games list. Instead I'm seeing a lot of really pathetic phony victim mentality posturing.

couldnt disagree more. this is the games biggest strength imo. the transversal is fluid, intuitive, fun, and easy, all without being automatic.

Destiny has a 76 though...

Here are the sites that gave Destiny its GOTY along with their corresponding metacritic score:

Premios Xataka (not rated)
GamesRadar (9/10)
CheatCodeCentral (9/10)
VOS (not rated)
XXL Magazine (not rated)
XGN Reader's Choice (lol)
Digital Trends (not rated)
CoPlaNet (not rated)
GameKings (not rated)

Can we stop this now? Or would you feel better if Premios Xataka gave Sunset Overdrive their GOTY?

Thread is doing great everyone.

Agreed. I'm not a big open-world guy, but the fluidity of travel was great without feeling too simplistic.

Great game, I loved it. Probably my favorite game of last year. It didn't get a lot of nods for game of the year, but that doesn't matter.

It's still pretty likely a sequel will get made, and I'm gonna love that sequel.

Whoa... I don't care about it not getting a GOTY award either way. I was simply making a point as to why metacritic ratings didn't/don't matter (in reply to him); Tone was a bit unnecessary.

I really enjoyed Sunset Overdrive while playing it, but once you put it down it just doesn't stick with you. I feel no need to yell about SO's greatness or revisit the game. It was solid, I enjoyed playing it and there were no technical issues with it at all.

No, you countered that metacritics shouldn't matter in determining GOTY, but they do. The same sites that give games 7/10s and 8/10s are not going to give a game GOTY. In Destiny's case, the same sites that rated it very highly gave it GOTY. Your reply was misdirected whatabouttism, even after you edited.

Yeah I kind of got that vibe, too. I mean, at 28 with a family I don't really care about "cool kid shit" anymore, but the game definitely gave me that vibe.

I'm playing through it right now. The humor doesn't really work for me and it feels like its trying too hard. I just met the geeks or whatever that are hanging out in the arcade. like the intro CS for these people and its like OMG THESE NERDY COOL HIPSTERS ARE LOL TXTING EACH OTHER the whole time their friend is talking and talking shit about him. its supposed to be funny i guess because they're so lazy/apathetic/whatever the fuck, and its just..whatever.

But I don't really care about any of that. I care about the gameplay. It's pretty fun, but it's not as fun as I thought it would be. Sunset Overdrive is actually one of the reasons I bought an XB1, and it was a bit of a letdown for me. Definitely not GotY material for me personally.

Yeah but it still felt super short. If you cut out all the challenges, it's not long at all.

It just didn't feel satisfying enough as a whole to be GOTY for me.

Not as many people played it I think. Yea "but Bayonetta 2!" but that game appeals far more to a hardcore gamer than SO I think, so people bought hardware to play it.

The humor in the game was actually pretty great, and I have a great sense of humor.

Agreed. And I tend to have really good opinions so yeah. But that comes with the territory when you I consider that I'm one of the most modest down to earth people ever born.

;)

In my opinion, it was a high skillcap game. Several people I know who got it couldn't get acclimated to the controls.

The game is way more fun when you can play it effectively.
