How do you deal with woke family members or friends?

So fellow Gaffers, how do you deal with people like that in your own circles? I'm close with my cousin so I don't want to just disassociate from them, but I'm also not sure how to even have a normal conversation with his fiancé without it derailing into some social justice lecture.

This is actually very simple. Just confront her with simple facts. Either she will answer only nonsense, or she will ignore it, in which case you simply say the facts again very calmly. This is actually enough to show at least all the other people at the table that she is an idiot. Just beware, no matter how wrong she is, you cannot expect such people to change their opinion at this moment.

Most of my friends are really moderate. Usually a bit leaning to the more left side.
I just try to give my arguments.

Most of them are quite baffled when I tell them I am a huge pacifist, and Trump is the most pacifist POTUS I have ever witnessed. For instance.

A huge talking point here in the EU is the refugee crisis. These left leaning types are usually pro refugee, without thinking about the consequences. It's actually quite easy to get them stumbling on their arguments with a few questions about the possible outcome if all of Africa and the middle east decides to come here, and how we could cope with this.

i don't have "woke" friends, I don't need retarded people like that in my life and thankfully, I can call very smart people my friends.

Go woke and go broke bitches

A couple weeks ago, I stayed home practicing Tekken combos while my other buddies got together for a board game night. I'm the most reclusive of the clique, so this is common.
Allegedly, at some point during the night, my friends got into a discussion about fried foods, and how grease works. My buddy, who is obese, said he was trying to eat healthier and was using an air fryer to promote this new life choice.
The other, more conservative leaning friend, apart from myself, of the group called him out on this and saying, "dude, it doesn't matter how you cook it if you're still eating like 30 chicken nuggets a day!"
Then they somehow got into an argument about the health benefits of using an air fryer and at some point my most leftist, Twitter woke, buddy accused my Republican mate of 'mansplaining' fried food to him.
The next day us two right-leaning friends went to Costco together and I was nearly in tears as he told me the story because it was so ridiculous. The point where you're so woke you accuse another man explaining something to you as 'mansplaining' is the day you need to tuck your dick between your legs and cluck.

Woke or not, religion or politics, people who are so sure their opinion or view of the world is the only right one that they feel they have the right to preach it, bore me and I personally choose not to have anything to do with them.

Which gives me, finally, a perfect opportunity to insert this awesome clip:

That clip is CLUTCH! And so needed for everyone! Not just TDS addled folks but anyone on the right who is just as belligerent as those folks! We all need to eat humble pie every now again. Myself included... I HAVE had some humble pie and be reminded that we're all humans and we all are children of God.

Thank you for this clip!

I've learned in my group that I just have to cut the discussion. Pressed hard enough, the woke arguement just boils down "white men = racist and bad". At that point, I just give up. It's so tiring.

One thing I've noticed is that if you press ultra woke people hard enough they have trouble backing things up without Googling crap on their phone. No, I'm not asking what others online think, I'm talking to you directly. People on the left wanna celebrate differences but are somehow afraid of their own individuality?

I think lack of individuality is part of their ideology.

Left-wing critical theorists see individuals embedded in their racial, ethnic, gender, or sexual-orientation identity group. Each person speaks from the shared group consciousness. (“Speaking as a progressive gay BIPOC man …”) In an individualistic culture, status goes to those who stand out; in collective moments, status goes to those who fit in. The cultural mantra shifts from “Don’t label me!” to “My label is who I am.”

My cousin was telling every one in my family i'm a Nazi because i support Brexit and like Trump.
I sent him a message on Facebook telling him he is a faggot and the next time we meet will be a long time from now, most likely at a family funeral and that i will smash the fucker up.

In “real life” I’m so ambiguous that no one but my wife and kids have any idea about my beliefs. I really don’t need to have my in-laws hating me because that would just put unnecessary pressure on my wife. If I’m drinking I have to be super careful, because my filter stops working, so I have to catch myself.

We try to change the subject. Religion, politics, sex, are all topics that should never be discussed. Especially with family.

But when some woke person tries to, they are quickly shot down for being stupid. They never have anything good to say other than "Trump is bad, homeless should be given your money, not mine, racism this".

I have been to some cringey family gatherings that were all woke. It is so bad.

According to surveys, republicans have less formal education and make a bit less money.

I'll give you the "education" piece. We all know the value of a Liberal arts degree.

Republicans make more money, and are happier though. I feel bad for the people that think an indoctrination is the measure of success.

You engage them calmly and civilly.

Eventually they'll become emotionally unstable, have a breakdown, call everyone around them a Nazi, *phobe or *ist, embarrass themselves and retreat to their safe space.

The problem solves itself really.

Politics and religion out of the table at dinner, that keeps the meaningless discussions out and the good food in. You would be even more comfortable discussing fetishes.

Thinks mods influence posters politics. Promoted to QAnon Editor.
Don't burn bridges. Just ask rational question that make them think about their position, but know when to back down.

To answer the question... I just listen and if it gets heated I diffuse. I agree with some but when it gets to extreme stuff, I just diffuse and turn the conversation elsewhere.

The thing that hurts discourse between people with differing opinions is that no one listens to understand. They just hear to respond... On both sides! Or all 4 or 5 sides!

I listen and try to understand. I see what we agree on and take that to build on it. Doesn't always work because some people can't be talked with. They don't want to listen back. And that's ok. No need to argue or fight. These are people I love and I won't disown them because of difference.
But they’re feeling pressured to disown you.

It depends on the person.

Being in California I have a ton of friends that used to be traditional liberals that are now ultra woke. Some of them have become insufferable while others are still willing to have civil conversations. The insufferable ones I just ask them questions to hear out their logic. What's weird is sometimes they get really mad about that

If it's someone I don't know well I just skirt around the topic because you don't know who's going to blow up and freak put over you not agreeing with them 100% and that's always a waste of time

There's a spectrum of responses, but none of them really involve debating a person or trying to explain something to them. If someone's far enough gone that I would internally classify them as "woke" then it's pretty much never worth responding to or acknowledging them.

I only have one, and she's a cousin's wife so if I see her once a year that's a lot. I pretty much just don't talk to her lol. Not just because she's 'woke' but mostly because she's dull as fuck

Because it’s pretty rude and uncalled for calling someone “fucking stupid” because they identify with either party and then doubling down and insulting all of your family.
Why did you like this post and want to encourage more of this type of posting ? It was well deserved in my opinion.

I reminisce the good times that were had with them before being woke is a thing, and let go. If our interaction is forced (funerals, holidays), they can still have my attention but I will not actively get theirs.

It would be a welcome change to have more woke' family members, to balance the one that called a black lady on television a 'jiggaboo' out of nowhere like it's 1974 and he's in the national front and it's a casual term used in everyday conversation. gonna have to rely on my gf's family for that I guess

It's insane that even such useless topic as politics are casually thrown into the ring during dinner. I guess I am glad, that Bolshevik created the situation where people don't think that anything can be done, so people don't talk about that shit in here anymore.

My family is mostly indifferent towards politics. I think one of my sisters would cheat on her husband with Ben Shapiro if she got the chance but otherwise you won't really catch any of us talking politics with each other.

I didnt like or encourage the post. As I said, I've been seeing posts that are deleted and I can't help but wonder why they are being whisked away never to be seen. It seems bizarre for a forum that prides itself in being so open and free to voice opinions to see them swept under a rug. This is his opinion on Trump followers, a crass opinion no doubt but surely you have seen the opinions people here have about the "left" or people who vote Democrat right?

Here is another one from the Returnal thread. Remember that thread? The one about the rsd looking game but the thread immediately devolved into whining about how ugly the main character was? If they are so egregious why isn't a ban or warning being issued and the post left up for posterity? It just kinda reeks of steering the narrative in a direction. Nothing to see here folks!

That is a really bad idea to talk about politics in general with your significant others family especially at the dinner table. I would do my best to change the subject. I just don't think that is appropriate.

I don't mind it at all. I welcome anyone with differing opinions to sit down and chat, at the end of the conversation we can both look back and not think of each other as horrible assholes then it is a win. Honestly wokeness as the internet likes to call it is not a problem for me. Being a giant asshole is. If a person cannot go through a conversation without name calling, flailing around with abstract concepts that do not bring merit to the argument or just flame out and end up being aggressive those are the things that I dislike. Vastly different opinions are fine for the most part unless they fundamentally go against my morals/ethics and even then if the converstation gets a bit lively but does not become an enraged emotional dumpster fire then I am fine with it.

Hey GAF. So at a recent family gathering I met my cousin's new fiancé. She seems nice and friendly at first glace. However, once dinner started and everyone was engaging in conversations, it quickly became obvious that she was super woke. Now, my family is generally pretty moderate and have no issues with liberals or conservatives, but she is basically a far-left, socialism is good, we need a revolution liberal. The rest of dinner turned into an awkward cringe-fest as she lectured us on how Trump is destroying public education and putting immigrant kids in cages.

So fellow Gaffers, how do you deal with people like that in your own circles? I'm close with my cousin so I don't want to just disassociate from them, but I'm also not sure how to even have a normal conversation with his fiancé without it derailing into some social justice lecture.

I have a large family in the U.S. with 98% being super left-wing liberal and loud about it. The family I have South of the border (myself included) are pretty conservative. To deal with it? Don't bring up politics at all. I tried it once years ago and the family wanted to kill me. Once someone goes woke...you can't fix them. This is another reason why I enjoy being detached from social media, news via internet / TV / or paper.

My whole family is "woke" and we get along just fine. For you maybe its best to just avoid political conversations. Try to steer into a different subject.

It was so crass it was probably reported. We definitely should not encourage these types of posts, sure shit on one party or the other all you want but when you start throwing blatant idiotic statements and making it personal it should be off limits , adding to the rudeness and making it even more personal by extended the insult to family members.
The mods did there job and I applaud them for it.

I work in an industry dominated by nothing but woke. It's party of every company's policy. Every other person is a blue haired feminist. Thank god the corona virus forced everyone to work from home so now I no longer to face them or listen to their bullshit on a regular basis.

Friends... it's simple. The more woke they are, the more limited our friendship will be. Pretty easy since woke people like to bring it up in every occasion so I know who to avoid.
