who are you

are you a member of popgaf

leave that place

leave

please

they don't deserve you

and what's with this extended absence bit I thought kyon was struck down by people who didn't understand him, which is a shame

he really enjoyed batting things around and most reasonable people knew where he was coming from

he deserves to be here more than someone like say bootAPEtroll

Kyon and [ e f f e ]. Gone too early because of pressed people. :(

Just because YOU left PopGAF doesn't mean there aren't any true Moesha fans left in the building.

you are the reason why popgaf members commit thread suicide

Probably mentioned dozens of times, but no-one cares that actors don't write their own dialogue.

In many instances, music is about the performance. I don't think an artist needs to be the source of the creation of that performance.

Depends on what you want to celebrate.

I just learned that most actors don't write their own scripts, or even their own parts. I will never respect their performance again

Seriously, musicians have been playing songs created by other people for thousands of years. I don't understand the insistence that a musician has to create original music only written by themselves.

They don't. Even the Beatles got their career started by covering American artists like Chuck Berry and Little Richard.

But of course, that's not what they're remembered for.

But seriously, I feel like most music in the history of music has been composed by writers who aren't the best singers, and performed by singers who don't write the music. This isn't new.

Or are you supposed to think all choral or operatic music is bullshit, because the singers didn't write those songs? Is every orchestra bullshit, because the musicians and the conductor didn't write a line of the piece they're playing?

I don't know where this idea came from that real music cannot be collaborative.

would a real chef let someone else make their sauce?

would a real painter let someone else stretch their canvas?

would a real game designer let someone else write their code?

i don't think so.

I think I can agree with the OPs generalized point that today's pop music is 99.9% producer (and marketing) driven and that most pop-stars are somewhat interchangeable because of that dynamic. Yes, many popular singles could easily be given to any number of names and still sound pretty much the same. All a singer has to do to get song writing credit is have a tiny bit of input with the other writers so don't read too much into who is given credit for what.

That doesn't mean the music can't be quite good.

And you're still wrong.

NO YOU (wtf.)

Dude, at this point the burden of proof is on you when you make bullshit statements like "I think I can agree with the OPs generalized point that today's pop music is 99.9% producer (and marketing) driven and that most pop-stars are somewhat interchangeable because of that dynamic."

Me and my PopGAF sistren could go on and on about how involved most pop stars are in the creation of their music and branding, and for the most part we already have in this thread and the 8 freaking OTs we have in community.

Ah pro tools and auto tune beg to differ. Admittedly I do know who half of the people are on the radio top 40, but most sound quite similar. That is either because of a money grab at what is currently popular or the producers of music all go for the same sound in the vocals.

My favourite (pop) artist is Avril Lavigne, the last time I checked she had written a shitload of her own songs, so yeah it's not a fact I have to deal with.

The thing that really baffles me about Popgaf is how they don't care about Pop itself. You go into the Metal thread or the Hip Hop thread and you see healthy discussion of the genre as a whole.
Popgaf only cares about bad pop. Which I don't get at all.

Plus, why are they so unable to distinguish between liking something and considering something good?
I mean, Lana Del Rey's debut was my favourite album from 2012 but I wouldn't ever rate it above a 6/10, and that's being generous. I absolutely love it, but what does that have to do with it's quality?
Liking something doesn't make it good, guys...

Don't really care about the communal kool-aid and don't have to supply "proof". For many songs it isn't difficult to imagine other artists singing and making hits out of them. Production is definitely the driving force but that isn't a bad thing. Yes, many artists are involved with the process but that doesn't make it sound or feel less interchangeable. In many cases their "live" voices/performances don't even sound similar to their studio voice and it isn't because they are making artistic improvisational choices...the studio just normalizes everything these days.

Could you imagine Katy Perry singing something like Bloody Mary by Lady Gaga?

i couldn't

People have different opinions and criteria for music. You may learn about it at www.theschooloflife.com
