How important is backwards compatibility on the PS5 for you?

Very important, I have a huge backlog of games I still need to get around to and sometimes I feel like replaying a gem from the past, KOTOR for example on the Xbox. If both console manufacturers are planning to stick with AMD going forward then I see zero reason BC should not work for PS4-PS5-PS6 for example.

It's not important in the slightest.

It would only be important if the PS5 had no decent games to play on it.

I understand why it's important to Xbox users.

I like BC. Used it a lot in my pS2 day to play a lot of PS1 games. I'm attached to games that I like. I'm a keeper.

I've always looked at it as a plus, but not a necessity. I mean, it's a new console, prepare for new games. Want to play your old games so bad, just keep your old console.

Thats about how I've always seen it, its a good bonus but not a deal maker breaker. With the playstation I've got quite an old collection going back three soon to be four consoles and I would really like a way to just have them all run through one device. Mostly because it would reduce the barrier to playing an old game on a whim. If I want to go back and play a ps3 game setting the console up ads 20-30 minutes of annoying reaching around behind my tv and console stand to unhook whats there and hook everything back up.

If instead I could just push the disc into a new console things would be hugely simplified. I still enjoy loading up older games on my xbox now and again because its so simple, it makes it easy to do and that makes me more likely to play.

I think it's a really nice feature, although not that personally important to me because I'm one of those strange people that likes to play games on the original hardware, and typically keeps my old systems - so if I want to play for example a PS2 game, I will play it on a .. PS2. I can sort of understand Sony throwing in the towel on BC because they got so horribly burnt with it on the PS3 - they announced it as a firm feature early on in the development process and ended up painted into a corner where the only way they could deliver the spec they had promised was to stick basically all the hardware out of a slim PS2 into the launch PS3 - which I would estimate added about $65 to the BOM of a machine that was already way too expensive to build.

The fact that the PS4 was highly successful even without BC probably helped to cement the position that they didn't need it.

Microsoft are in a bit of a different position - they have the advantage of being part of a much larger company that has an enormous amount of in-house development resources. This includes all the people MS hired for their virtualization products section back when they started to consider VMware to be a major potential business risk. Building a container that will run games for a legacy games console is exactly the sort of project these people would be perfect for (and they would probably enjoy it a lot more than rolling out a bug compatible version of Windows Server 2000). So I think it's mostly a case of them leveraging the specific strengths they know they have.

I'd like the PS4 BC on PS5 at the very least. I did miss out on playing several PS3 only releases when I owned the PS4 (games like Arkham Origins, GT6 to name a few). So yeah this PS4 BC on PS5 is awesome and would've been very disappointed if Sony had dropped the ball on that. Glad Cerny and AMD worked in ensuring BC works right out of the gate in the PS5. PS3-1 BC though not sure if Sony is willing to spend in the dollars and work effort to make it a reality. I wish Sony had seen the greatness of doing something akin to what Microsoft accomplished with BC on Xbox One and the Series X with support all the way back to OG Xbox and Xbox 360.

Backwards capability it's like 60% of my decision to purchase PS5 now.

If Jim Ryan had told me that PS5 would be compatible with PS1, PS2, and PS3 game, I had preordered the console day one even if it's a turd or a trash can. Don't care, I want to play all of my collection.

Right!? I was really holding out hope for full b/c from them. Like I know they can have psone emulation no problem, we've seen it before. Even rough ps2 emulation exists in the wild on hacked ps3 and ps4 consoles. I still have vague hopes, mostly from some patents they put out, that we will see some backwards compatability in the future. Even sony's history of adding much desired features to consoles after launch is giving me hopes that they just couldn't finish B/C software in time.

I am (more realistically) a bit concerned that they'll just put it out as individual games on their store though rather than letting my shove my discs into the console.

I have 320 PS4 games. They better work. PS3/PS2/PS1 I don't give a rats ass about because I own the better remastered versions of most games I want to play from that time.

I'm sorry but most won't. At least not immediately. They already stated it won't have 100% backwards compatibility. And I'd bet on it not supporting digital download PS4 titles either.

I want it 100% going back to PS1. I'll pay the absurd price
Not 100% I can understand for things like PSVR or some obscure untested title but I'm still optimistic all/99% of my library will work.

I would prefer having the option of backwards compatibility but it's not a deal breaker. I would want to be able to play all my games in a single place but realistically or practically I haven't or don't actually go back to a lot of the games I have finished before so....

Very important, not happy with my impression of backwards compatibility on ps5(paid for upgrades from Sony, no ps1-ps3 emulation, unclear if full hardware is out to use or if it's just a compatibility type mode, is it a full boost utilization not just partial and if so how much etc...)which is why I'm buying Xbox next gen.

I was really hoping for physical PS1 and PS2 BC just so I could kick out the non-HDMI native consoles. Digital is NOT real BC to me as you are at the mercy of whatever meager amount of games they make available. But I'm sure they will pull the same crap they did with the PS4 and not let it read CD's. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I read that hackers determined the PS4's optical drive WAS capable of reading CD's, they just never enabled it in the firmware.

Very, I missed out on the PS4 Generation largely. Luckily, the PS5 can play all but 10 PS4 games, so its a great opportunity to make up for lost time.

Very important to me. A huge PS4 backlog that I'd want to continue to play on the PS5. Great news about PS4 game saves too.
Very pleased.

Decently important.

I'm holding on to my PS4 games so I can replay them on the PS5 otherwise I would have sold them already.

Holy shit I was actually going to reply to you until I saw that link.

If anyone wants to see what an astroturfer or schill looks like quote that post.

It'll be important down the road. Due to the size of the PS5 I'd rather put my PS4 away when I get the PS5. To be able to play all my PS4 games on the PS5 is therefore a necessity. For Xbox this is no problem at all, save files and everything is just carried over. Don't know how this'll work on the PS5.

Super important. There is a lot of money and time invested in building a library of games throughout a gen, and that shouldn't go to waste just because of a hardware upgrade.

Couldn't care less. I buy new console to play new games, not ancient shit.
This is the grossest type of gamer.

Everyone worried about what Gamepass is doing to gaming only needs to look at this guy.

Ancient shit that came out this year,is already consumed and forgotten.

Fucking disgusting.

Fast food gaming for fast food appetites. GoT and TLOU are already ancient by his standards.

You know, I'm right fucking here. Don't need to talk about me in the 3rd person. Also, chill the fuck out, seems like I hit a nerve. Get some air, breathe. Don't be so emotionally volatile about this stuff. It's ok, really.

My post was more directed to those hyped about new consoles because they're obsessed with playing games they've already played God knows how many times, @ higher resolution and framerate. Never understood how one could garner so much excitement about that, but whatever. Also, one would assume that whoever was interested in GoT or TLOU has already played them, so again, I don't understand being excited for the PS5 to replay the same damn games. There are so many games out there and new experiences, and time is valuable, so why not play something new?

But hey, I don't want to traumatize you any further.

Well I bought a lot of digital games on PS4 (Gow, death Stranding, Tlou2 and more) so it is important of course Sony could have did better, like Microsoft, but well, better than nothing.

Score: 6

I used your quote as a point and you reinforced it.

It causes me no stress, as I don't give a fuck what you play and I assume you feel the same about me.

I used your words to prove a point and you came back to help reinforce my point.

If you disagree, I'd be happy to hear your position, but I will be comparing against what you initially said, so don't contradict yourself.

I think you understand how narrow minded and dumb your original post sounds now though, so I'm willing to let you off the hook.

Until I see you post something so shortsighted again.

assuming it doesn't add cost to the system, why would anyone say it isn't important, that's just dumb reasoning
People hate themselves and want to see the company win, even if it costs them?

This is the only answer I can come up with.

When you see people shouting give me more remakes. Instead of make what I own better, you know the companies won.

I held off buying or playing many late PS4 games because I anticipated a PS5 patch that would give them a resolution boost but more importantly, 60fps support. Series X showed a pretty nice video regarding BC and if PS5 has anything like that, it's a day 1 buy for me.

Pretty much the only reason why GOW was my last exclusive PS4 title I played. After I played TLOU: Remastered, I felt cheated out of the first time experience after the PS3. Don't get me wrong, it looks amazing but after playing it 1080p/60fps, I wished that this was the experience I had for the first time.

A lot. I have quite the number of games bought and not yet played, and my Pro is loud. Also, I quite like replaying games, though I am hoping for some patches to make them even better.

Same boat as you boss. The only game interesting to me for next gen us demons souls. At $130 AUD for this game. Forget it. The console in Aus has an extra $50USD value on top. $599 for the DE version. At that price it is not worth it for 1 game. Will wait a while I think.

I also want to play all the metal gear and silent hill games. Where can I do that?
PS3 says hi for all the silent hill and metal gear solid goodness

BC is very important for me.

I'm a PC gamer, but want to buy PS5 eventually, maybe after hardware revision and price drop. I gifted my PS4 to my friend two years ago (it was collecting dust anyway) and would like to play all PS4 exclusives I missed, especially God of War.
