How is the PS4 as a Blu Ray player now?

Im aware that early this year, a few publications did a PS3 vs PS4 comparison from a Blu Ray Player functionality standpoint, and the former came out on top.

After the stability patches that were released throughout the year, does that still hold true? I have both a PS4 and PS3, but will need to take the PS3 out of storage, and ideally I don't want to clutter my room with too much stuff

Reason for asking is that I ordered a shitton of BDs from Amazon during Black Friday, and Ive hardly watched Blu Rays before that.

Anyway, I should probably elaborate. I'm more concerned from a Audio/Video quality perspective :)

If they don´t release a proper remote => useless for me.

Is it really that difficult to use the DS4? I would choose controller over remote every time. I wish I could use DS4 to control my Sky TV.

OP, everyone will say PS3 is better because of a remote, lol.

Well yes

1) We all know the controller is empty after 5-6 hours
2) The controller powers itself off when not in use. You have to reconnect just to press pause.

Both are kind of "no-go"s for me.

Don´t get me wrong => If you don´t have another BR-player you can use it, but I would prefer any other device which has a real remote.

It is funny because i have a PS3 and PS4 that have blu ray but i use my stand alone blu ray player just because it just works and i have a remote.

The controller powers it self off because you didn't change it

Go to settings, power save settings, turn off controllers automatically, and select 30 minutes, 60 minutes or off

The DS4 lasts about as long as Das Boot and sometimes it's nice to have some kind of IR remote you don't have to sync, so to speak. It'll last way longer if it's going into standby for long stretches but sometimes can be annoying to be unable to immediately pause something.

the CEC control is flawed with my TV as well, it jumps two options with every click

the quality is fine, but operation is annoying and if I had a spare HDMI socket on my TV I'd buy a standalone player in an instant. And no, I don't want to start messing around with HDMI switches.

It's an enormous shame that the Wii U doesn't have BD playback, I'd love to be able to operate it as a BD player in a similar way to the TV control function.

I'd be interested to hear about how the Xbone is nowadays as well.

I recall Digital Foundry being down on both new consoles' media capabilities around launch, but I'd like to know what the situation is after a year of updates.

Let's be honest: the PS3 is really awesome as blu-ray player, especially with the nice remote control.

It still is included in CNET's top 5 Blu-ray player options I think.

Id say a piece of shit.

The other night we watched Pacific Rim in 3D and there was a slight video/sound sync delay the entire movie. I put up with it.

Last night we started Spider Man in 3D and it was WAY off. Rebooting the tv helped, but it was still too noticable to everyone.

Switched to my PS3, and all problems went away.

Ill never use my ps4 for movies again.

If you give a damn about PQ, whilst playing a movie, bring up the settings and turn Noise Reduction to OFF.

It was set to 2 during a firmware update.

I think it's pretty damn good. My PS4 runs pretty quiet, maybe because it's well ventilated so noise isn't an issue. The IQ seems great and it works just fine as long as your happy to use the controller over an actual remote.

aye, HDMI CEC sucks - i even have a Sony Bravia TV, but there's no button that calls up the menu (which 'triangle' does on the controler, afaik?).
So if i want to change language or subtitle settings, i need to use the controller.

Which is better out of the two new consoles? The One or the PS4? I haven't put a Blu-ray in either.

I usually just watch movies on TMN, or TV, and rarely buy or watch BR discs. If I want to watch one, I'll just use a PS3, so as to not put wear on a newer device's disc drive laser.

It's better than it was, but the PS3 is still ahead. One thing that annoys me about playback is that they changed it from X to O on the controller to pause / play - minor thing I know!

I use my TV remote via hdmi control, no remote needed really

So there are people actually watching 3D movies, didn't those exist.

I bought a standalone Sony BR player dirt cheap, works great.

I just got a ps4 and it won't let me play any mvies until I connect my system to the internet. What's that all about?

Well the PS4 lets me use my Samsung TV remote to flick through the menus, pause movies etc.

the best guess is it means they only have to pay the per console bluray/dvd licence fees if the machine is actually used to play those formats.

Eh, it's fine. It works fine. I don't really have any Blu-ray 3D discs, so that's not a problem for me. But it's fine.

Unlike DVD players, there's not a whole lot of variance in blu-ray player quality in my experience. Video and audio is always the same. Some are laggier than others. The PS4 is pretty snappy. I use it as my main blu-ray and dvd player and have no problems.
