How is the PS4 as a Blu Ray player now?

The PS3 can't do Dolby True Audio and 3D at the same time. It can handle DTS Master Audio while doing 3D though.

I don't believe this issue carries over to the PS4.

Righty. The number of affected films was tiny, but I do own a couple. Off the top of my head, How to Train Your Dragon was affected by this.

Since they updated the Blu-Ray player to support 3D, it's been my primary Blu-Ray player and I haven't had any complaints. I just finished watching the second half of the Desolation of Smaug Extended.

Anymore, I just Netflix.

Give me 1080p 24hz in the Netflix app or give me death. Or cookies. Blu-Ray remains the only choice for video philes like myself.

Last time I used it as a br player I could never get DTS master HD audio to output on my receiver. PS3 had no problem. PS4 always outputs as PCM, doesn't matter if it's on bitstream etc.

It's worked fine for me. I have noticed it makes a strange whirring noise when it's loading the disc though. Not sure if that's normal or not but it only happens for blurays and not games.

personally it works better than it did before, watched the LotR Extended Edition, Riddick(2013), Batman Trilogy and it looked gorgeous cant comment on the sound because i guess you mean it with a HT/AVR set up which i lack (with Astros A50 via optical it works awesome too)

for the most part HDMI-CEC works well enough to me and i dont mind switching on the DS4 in case i need to do something that my TV remote cant do

When in the ps4 Blu-ray pull up its menu in the Blu-ray software and select bitstream and you will get direct feed to your receiver

While a movie is playing, hit the Options button on your controller then go under Settings. There's an option called Audio Format, under there you can change it from Linear PCM to Bitstream (Direct).

It's also the same place you shut off Dynamic Range Control if you wanted to.

Like others have said, no official PS4 media remote is a real bummer. Should've absolutely been there Day 1. Glaring mistake by Sony. Using your DS4 will run the battery down quickly. I laugh at people who actually prefer to use the controller.

Also, no HBO Go app is a another letdown. Would be nice if Sony could get their shit together and get an ESPN app, as well. That way, I could retire my X360 as a streaming device (possibly move it to the bedroom for streaming).

and sometimes it's nice to have some kind of IR remote you don't have to sync

The PS3 remote was actually bluetooth, not IR. Now, thanks to the magic of HID, you could attach an IR dongle to your PS3 and use an IR remote, but the official remote still needed to be synced. That said, a PS4 remote would assuredly also be bluetooth rather than IR.

Put in a disc -> done. Seems fine to me.

However, I stick with my standalone player because those can be region hacked.

I was told the Ps3 was region locked for BR.

But just yesterday for the first time i popped in a USA BR (princess bride) into my Japanese PS3 and it worked to my suprise.

people complaining about a lack of remote, get the playstation app for your smart phone.
Alright, I tried this. Am I wrong, or does it only have like half of the buttons that the actual DS4 or remote should have? If they want it to be a full media remote, that would be great, but it seemed to be lacking in buttons...

Unlike DVD, BD only has Region A, B and C.
Region A - US and East Asia
Region B - Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, Middle East and certain parts of Asia
Region C - Central Asia, China, etc.

Japan falls under East Asia hence your US blurays will work on your Japanese PS3.

DS4 shitty battery life and controller on/off notifications that can't be disabled makes the PS4 pretty shit for me. Apart from the controller, i haven't had any issues, but the controller itself is enough of an issue that I would choose any of my other bluray devices over the PS4.

I rarely use physical media for moves, but I've watched a few blurays on it -- premetheus, nausicaa, and I plan to watch the wind rises bluray soon. I've had zero complaints.

The biggest improved over PS3 is that you can now multitask.
That means while watching a DVD or BD you stay connected to the PSN and can still receive game invites etc. and most importantly downloads do also continue while you watch something.
Furthermore, you can switch to the PS4 menu/game and later switch back to where you left off in the movie/series. That's especially helpful with the kind of BDs that start from the beginning (including trailers etc.) every time you launch them.

So there are people actually watching 3D movies, didn't those exist.

I bought a standalone Sony BR player dirt cheap, works great.

If you have proper kit for it, 3D is really amazing. I have a bunch of 3D blu-rays. I don't really know what it's like in the cinema with those crappy, cheap plastic glasses.

PS4 for blu-rays is janky just like it is for everything else. It will do random sh*t like not play sound of the disc then I switch to PS3 and everything is fine.

And unlike DVD, lots of BD discs come without a region lock.

It lacks pretty much all buttons and the back/enter etc. controls only seem to work in the XMB (and second-screen supporting games I guess). I launched a DVD and couldn't do anything besides going back using the PS button, no second screen for this "app" either.
Maybe he/she was talking about full Remote Play using the Sony/rooted smartphones?

The PS4 super expensive as a bluray player. The $60 player I got a few years ago works as well. I don't use 3d bluray movies.

I would rather not put the extra wear on my PS4.

PS4 worked fine for me, overall the image/sound quality is fine. Basic functions work. Battery life isn't an issue for me because I don't watch 8 hours at a time. But I prefer the PS3 for the remote.

I have this set to OFF. Should I?

Wow did not know,

Thanks.

The PS3 is the more refined of the two. It just seems less clunky from a GUI perspective. I usually use my PS3 over my PS4 for watching blu-rays. Also, the PS3 is more energy efficient if that matters to you.

what is with the fucking prompt to connect to the god damned internet every time I put in a bluray movie on the ps4? why can't this prompt be turned off? no, I don't want to connect to the mother fucking intertubes for the bdlive GARBAGE.
