How will Nintendo approach "Handheld" Zelda now?

So yall gonna wait till they reveal pokemon stars to know its a traditional pokemon? Gone
Except gamefreak has never really made a game for consoles other than the stadium games which are pretty bare bones. Pokemon existing on switch doesn't prove your point that Nintendo will develop portable and console style games equally or that Nintendo won't just charge 60 for most games.

I'd be pretty hype for another Intelligent System's take on a Pokemon Colosseum/XD style game.

"Gone"? Come back when you feel like being an adult.

I'm not sure Nintendo will be interested in making two different types of Zeldas anymore. I hope they do though, because I've loved the DS and 3DS titles (not the remakes of Ocarina and Majoras).

"How will Nintendo approach "Handheld" Zelda now?"

I don't know. I do know that I'm done buying Nintendo hardware based on hopes & promises.

Are we ever gonna see 2D Top Down Zelda again?

Experience the challenge of endless adventure.
  • 2-D hand-animated sprites
  • Overhead perspective.
  • Explore a vast Overworld to discover hidden treasures.
  • Discover the mystical labyrinths of the underworld and ward-off ruthless enemies.

Essentially, do for Zelda what New Super Mario Bros. did for Mario; take the classic gameplay, give it updated aesthetics (higher quality sprites, music, etc., not 2.5-D like ALBW) and basically celebrate everything awesome about a much-beloved series. Since it's a spin-off series, it doesn't need to worry about the regular series canon or timelines; they can just make really good Zelda experiences without any kind of gimmick or theme beyond "It's like Old School Zelda!"

Make it happen, Nintendo.

I'd love to see a parallel line of high-resolution 2D Zeldas that look roughly like Four Swords Adventures on the GameCube—sprite-based with console-quality effects.

We still don't know if Switch is even going to replace the Nintendo handheld. 3DS still has a year left, and after that the future is open.

I reckon they'll release some sort of dedicated handheld, be it a new console or a more portable-focused switch, and we'll see nintendos handheld game design continue on that. If not, things like that may become smaller, downloadable titles.

Something like ALBW with better graphics would still work.

Or remake Link's Awakening, Oracle of Seasons/Ages, Minish Cap.

I want to see 2D Zelda with real sprites again.

I also want to see the one screen system-not like ALBW where you it is zoomed in and the camera pans with the character.

It's not like Nintendo has been shy about putting 2D games on their consoles. Not sure why that would change now that the software ecosystems have probably been merged.

I think they're looking at how the market behaves, they have various scenarios:

1. people like the hybrid console and 3ds sales continue, fail on mobile apps market: they'll keep working divided projects for portable devices and "main" console devices. And announce a 3DS succesor.

2. people like the hybrid console, people lose interest in 3DS, and top grossings on their mobile apps: they they'll make those kind of "portable" Zeldas for the Switch but with alternate stories (like putting a Tri Force Heroes in between a "big" Zelda release). and also putting small game apps like Fire Emblem mobile.

3. people dont like the hybrid console, and 3ds sales continue: unlikely

4. people dont like the hybrid console, 3ds sales fail but top grossings in mobile apps: Nintendo stops their hardware attempts and focus on software for other hardware like SEGA did.

So I do hope and feel they'll continue doing this kind of Zeldas, and not only for the market behaviour as the points above, but also because they have other dev teams, that can deliver smaller Zelda projects in between.

Hey man, if Nintendo had shown something like this your point would be more applicable. For now all we've seen are traditional console games. It's fair for people to wonder about this stuff.

The new game that the Bravely Default team is working on (Octopath Something) looks like something the 3DS would get, just looks nicer from a graphical standpoint. So his point is applicable if you're not just confining this discussion to Zelda titles.

I think the fact that full blown console style Zeldas take so long to make serves as good encouragement to keep making smaller handheld Zelda games.

We will probably get a MM style entry next reusing the same assets. They should totally do one Nier style though, mix of 3D, top down and side scrolling sections.

So is Disgaea. But this topic isn't about Bravely Deafult or Disgaea or that new Inazuma Eleven game that seems to be coming out for Switch. It's about Nintendo and 2D Zelda.

It makes sense they won't come out screaming "THROW AWAY YOUR 3DS BECAUSE IT'S TRASH NOW!" but some people just want confirmation that this will be the next 3DS + console.

And it really wouldn't surprise me if the next 2D Zelda is still on 3DS, especially after BoTW being a launch game. But people will take this as a sign that Switch is dead already or something.

I agree with you BTW. I just think Nintendo should be a bit more upfront about this so we could get pass unnecessary negative posts about the grim future of Switch and the 3DS.

The first handheld Zelda was just a slightly smaller scale version of what console Zelda was at that time.

They're just the 'smaller' entries. Consoles got them too, like Four Swords Adventure on Gamecube. They'll still release them.

I'm sure we will get the same variation that we always got, only this time they will be on one platform. 2D games and spinoffs in between main 3D instalments.

I'm sure they can coexist on the same platform, much the same way the console style N64 ports coexisted with the handheld style games on 3DS.

Why are they saying it's home console first and foremost? Because people perceive handheld games as inferior (generally lower budget etc.) Why are they despite that showing people playing games away from the big screen in the marketing? Because that's the biggest thing about the system that makes it different from others.

I don't think it's that hard to understand.

"I think there’s a sense that Nintendo Switch is a portable device. It is portable. But at its heart, it’s a home console that you can take with you on the go."
It's a portable home console, which is what handhelds have been since they were conceived.

Gameboy - NES
Gameboy Advance - SNES
DS - between SNES-N64
3DS - N64-GC
Switch - Portable Wii U+

The thing is, it makes sense for Nintendo to still support handheld games on the Switch. These games require shorter dev cycles and cost less to make. This allows them to supplement their bigger titles with more frequent smaller titles, giving them a healthier overall output across various pricepoints, which in turn provide options for consumers.

Not to mention that some devs are already set up for developing games of this type, and expecting them to just shift gears and make HD 3D titles would be less than efficient.

And they know there is a huge market for handheld-style games.

PLUS, the joy cons and local mp anywhere practically screams for HH games than can also be played by split joy cons in kickstand mode.

I would be very surprised if Nintendo did not think similarly in this regard.
