How will the PS4 and Xbox 720 controllers look like?

Dreams of a world where inflated review scores save studios
We all know about the Wii U controller and the build in screen but what about PS4 and Xbox 720? Do you think Sony and MS will copy Nintendo?

IMO the 360 controller is perfect and the DS3 needs to change the position of the analog stick.

I think the 720 controller will be intergraded with kitect somehow and the ps3 controller will get a redesign with a small touch screen build in.

PS4 controller will have touch pads, glowing orbs, camera's, motion sensors, magnetometers, and a 3D display.

Still won't have proper triggers or analog nubs.

you are the controller

The next Xbox won't have any controller, duh.

Just joking. But I think/hope they will copy the separate or break-apart controllers. It's a comfortable idea per se, but it becomes necessary for motion controls.

Well considering the fact that Sony hasn't changed the design much for three generations, I doubt we'll be seeing something drastically different. But I hope they fix those awful triggers. Microsoft doesn't have to do much, since it's pretty good already. Don't think they'll copy Nintendo though.

Edit: And yeah, Vita's rear touch pad may be used again.

I love the 360 controller. I imagine it'll be the same or improved on somehow. I'm sure they could find improvements internally or work with positioning a bit in some way. OH, make the D-pad finally worth a damn. That gray controller with the convertible D-pad was an improvement but still not good enough.

I was just thinking about this. Well, about the joysticks, to be exact.
There needs to be a complete revolution in analogue stick design.

The playstation sticks suck. The xbox sticks are slightly better, but still they suck. They're old.

Someone needs to figure out a new way to design a joystick. I'm talking about the internal mechanism. Something with a TON of resistance. Something that would offer previously inconceivable precision. Maybe make the ranger of motion/movement TWICE what we have now. Or something like that. Joysticks are here to stay, so why not design a better one?

Guessing the next XBox will look like the 360, but with a better D-pad (possibly something similar to that revamped one).

I am guessing someone will have 2 nunchucks with as much motion sensing stuff then can get in them

and analog stick on each + 4 buttons + 2 shoulder buttons on each so you can still play old games + people who want buttons still have them.

basically just a more user friendly version of the razor hydra.

If the DS4 is basically a Dualshock 3 but with correct triggers I'd be set. Ideally, the DS4 would be a DS2 but wireless. I really liked the L2/R2 buttons that had compared to the awful DS3 triggers.

The DS3 just needs better triggers (or even go back to buttons as those were better than the current triggers) and concave analog nubs and I'll be happy with it (I actually prefer parallel sticks but that might be because I don't play shooters).

The 360 controller just needs a better D-pad.

I'm sure both will add in some LCD screen/touchpad/additional motion functionality though.

My dream controller(s): Two ambidextrous single-handed controllers in the Wiimote/PSMove/Razer Hydra family. Each has...
  • Clickable analog stick - Hall effect mechanism, travel and spring tension intermediate between the 360 and PS3 sticks.
  • Analog trigger, similar to the 360's but wider and smoother.
  • Digital shoulder button, preferably microswitched like the 360 's bumpers, but with a bit less travel.
  • Either four face buttons or a d-pad. The system would come with one of each by default, but they'd be interchangeable.
  • A single start/select navigation button.
  • Internal gyroscope and accelerometer for motion controls.
  • IR detector strip for optical pointer control.
  • Internal battery, charged via standard micro-USB.
The controllers could be yoked together to serve as a steering wheel or traditional gamepad, or attached to a larger centering mechanism to act as a throttle or full-sized flight stick.

BELIEVE?

IMO the Navigator and Move are perfect. So damn good. Just picked up Killzone 3 for 19.99 and played a couple hours last night. Haven't used pointer controls in an FPS since Metroid:Trilogy, but was head-shotting fools left and right with it.*

Nothing like setting the defaults to about 1 inch up and 1 inch down. Move my wrist as little as mouse movement.

Just hope Sony continues this direction with PS4. Between that, and being able to plug my G27 and Thrustmaster flight stick into the USB ports, PS3 is best console ever with regards to controls.

*Maybe it helps that I can chew gum and walk at the same time? I don't know.

360 controller imo is getting to the point where I'm not sure improvement is possible. At least not without sacrificing something.

Sony needs to update the DS already, same controller since 2000 is sad.

the DS3 needs to change the position of the analog stick.

no thanks.

I expect similar pad for PS4, only with bach and front touch panels to emulate vita's possibilities.
However a 2-in-1 pad that could be converted into move+nunchuck could be a possibilty too.

For 360 i expect the same plus motion sensors.

Sony should just take some hints from the 360 controller. The analog stick placement and the R/L triggers are way better than on the DS3.

Rear touchpad would be nice... I also have this idea of a rotating analog nub. Not the whole part, just something at the top that you can rotate. Would be awesome for lockpicking minigames or as a quick method of timing bombs.

Maybe add some pointer functionality to a standard controller?

Some ideas may be weird, but I think there's a lot of room for improvement in this area.

Honestly hope both look like the 360 controller.

The size/sticks/triggers on the DS3 is why I only play things on ps3 if they seem like 10/10 and it's the only place like uncharted. A run of the mill decent exclusive? I'll try the demo and then bail because of the controller and hope for a port to 360 or pc.

I wonder if I can just use my DS3 with the PS4..... unless they somehow figure out some magical way to make a better controller.

If we're talking about traditional controllers, the best of all time would combine the 360's shell, Saturn's D-pad, CCPro's face buttons, Xbox Duke/Controller S triggers, and some compromise between the DS3 and 360's analog sticks.

It's gamers' faults the PlayStation controller is still the same.

I wanted to try that boomerang dammit!

The boomerang was Sony gracefully doing a pirouette from one type of bad ergonomics to another, all while the GC, Xbox S, and 360 controllers were chilling in the comfy middle ground.

There's no way Sony stays with that same tired design for another generation. It's been 15 years!

They need to grow a pair and innovate.
