Maybe the a way to look at this is the Madden vs NFL2k thing back when.

ipad tablet is Madden
Android tablet is NF2k

Android needs to sell at a price 66% less than an ipad to get people through the door?

When NFL2k went to 20$, it gained alot of market share on madden.

But hardware is a whole different thing, so who knows.

Good analogy but there's just one problem. 2K was demonstrably better than Madden in many ways. No tablet is close to making that claim vs ipad...yet

I ordered the 32GB from HP. However, when I checked my order status I was greeted with this message:

"We are unable to process your order, please contact a representative at 1-800-888-9909."

Guess that means I'm screwed.

The site now has a "sold out" image with no link to add to cart. HP site is dead.

During the mayhem yesterday when I was able to get the item into basket, I did Save Basket.

http://h71016.www7.hp.com/dstore/dcart/SaveCart.asp?HeaderAction=DisplayRetrieve&CartAction=DisplayRetrieve&oi=E9CED&BEID=19701&SBLID=

When you retrieve your basket using above link, you can then add the item into your cart or replace your basket. I was able to get an order through using above method. And this was after SOLD OUT message was splashed on all HP touchpad pages.

I'm not saying HP will honor or if the order won't get cancelled. Just a worth a try for anyone who did "SAVE BASKET" and can still retrieve it.

meh. Android is the leading mobile phone platform right now, IIRC. It's not unreasonable for them to have assumed that Android running on a tablet would yield good numbers on its own merits given nice screens and features. sure, they were horribly wrong to this point, but I think the assumption made logical sense.
not sure why you seem to think this affects android tabs more than itab. android's popularity has very little (almost nothing) do with tabs atm even though they're slowly gaining marketshare. that's apple's big moneymaker

Or you could have a golden ticket to future stock! Call the number and see where it takes you.

trying to enter a market by selling at a loss is dangerous. not every company can afford to eat hardware losses for years in an attempt to get marketshare. and, unlike the console business, there’s no software market that sells at high enough prices or in high enough volume on Android that can compensate.

the only way any of these guys will BEAT Apple (instead of just nipping at their heels) is to come up with something that seems radically different and cooler. not just adding features and banging on raw speed and flash support.

I think this device will impact tablet sales all around.

For istance I'm not biased toward iPad nor an android device, I'll get what offers more bang for your Mula. I wanted an iPad 1 first but the price kept me away. So I saw the nook color with the hack but $250 was still too steep. Refurbished models going at $180 still too much.

Now here comes the HP tablet for $100/$150 which is within my range. May not be the most capable but I honestly want an upgrade from my iTouch for web browsing (got my 32gb 3GS for $100 thanx to SD) on the bed/couch. And with the prospect of getting android on it makes the deal even sweeter.

So yes this has stopped me from being a potential iPad/android tablet buyer. Sucks for those in the business but I don't give to shits for them. Who ever lowers their price to an acceptable range, I'll be there.

anyone else think all the Android tablet manufacturers are bitter that this device is going to sell like 400,000 in volume to people who may have been legit tablet buyers in the next 12 months?

Considering how Android on tablets is struggling (less than 2 mill LTD?), the other companies had to feel a little upset about all this. No?

well i AM returning my Acer Iconia to best buy tmw that i bought last week, though that was mostly to wait for ipad 3/amazon's tablet. Touchpad, assuming my online purchase comes through, will ease the wait.

I am not into economics, so I am not sure if I a putting this correctly. But will the demand for this product affect the market at all? I mean what people expect to pay? Is the 99 the sweetpoint for Android adoption? Or is this an abberation? I mean I know Apple wont reduce their price. But Hardware makers might be looking at the amazing response to this tablet and say: that's it! Might a price drop like this fuel Android uptake?
Nope, it's an abberation. This was a liquidation. In order to get this level of hardware to sell at this price, HP lost $150 million in a weekend(assuming 500K units at $300 loss per unit). There isn't a company around, not even Apple, that could sustain that kind of loss over time.

Any Android tablet would need absolutely shit hardware, and a lack of Google services(which also need to be paid for) in order to sell at $99.

It will be years before decent hardware can sell at that price legitimately.

No one can afford to sell a tablet worth a shit for $100. You can get Android tablets for under $100 TODAY, but they suck.

Personally, I view the Touchpad as a stopgap measure to hold me over until we see what comes out in a year. By that point we'll have quad core tablets on the market and Windows 8 will have joined the party.

You wont see the Samsung Galaxy Tab go to $99 anytime soon or any other tablets

This was a fire sale, just like those Guitar Hero/Rock Band/DJ Hero bundles were getting slashed from $100 to $50 to $25 to now fucking $10
They the retailers just want it gone out of their store, remove those huge boxes taking up precious retail/warehouse space
(They will get paid back no matter what, so what the hell, it's a win-win, you sell out, at least you got customers coming into your store, maybe they might not leave empty handed)

Just like Black Friday, not everyone is gonna get the HP $179 15" Laptop (maybe 3-5 per store, first 5 in line guarantee they will take it out of spite + price)
So rather than go home empty, why not grab the $299 Toshiba or the $399 Sony (20+ per store)
(trust me I have went to 3 black fridays, got everything online 1st year, was #1 in line next year, and #4 the next, you make out like a motherfucking bandit, last year I did $10,000+ worth of shopping, only cost me around $5,5000, close to 50% off)

to be frank, if $250 for a nook colour was still too much for you, then you were never a potential customer. no one company lost a sale to you.

The holy grail of all consumer business. Steve Jobs is hoarding it.

What/Where/How/When...

What are the chances of Best Buy restocking these tablets? Every store in a 50 mile radius from my house says they're completely sold out

Some of you are totally overstating this. Many of the buyers were hoarders, and people will buy anything if it's cheap enough.

Well that price held me back, yes, does that mean that I eventually wouldn't of bought one in the next few months? No.

I'm sure if the HP tab never went on a fire sale and I felt this holiday to buy one [a tablet that is] and make the jump, I would of bought one say during BF or something. Now there is no reason to look forward to any tablet this holiday, regardless of price mind you if the NC didn't get a price hike for some odd reason.

All I know is, I'm good for now. My iPod needs an upgrade and an iPad it ain't. Lol.

Someone is trying to sell me a 32gb touchpad for $200. That doesnt seem too bad for a eReader and Comic book reader, with some light web browsing...What say you Gaf? Good price?

If you can't find one anywhere, sure. 50$ over sale price, but still 50$ less than a Nook Color.

And people looking to resell on ebay/craigslist/whatever

There will probably be more sales throughout the week. Let them sit on it for a while.

someone earlier said a lot of fake bids.
Oh yeah, I forgot sellers can't leave negative feedback, but are there any repercussions for basically trolling sellers? I would love to join in on the fun.

stores may have more to sell at the beginning of the week

Man, wish I had $100 of unneeded cash a few days ago. :(

Hope you guys enjoy the awesome WebOS, hopefully it is all worth it, if someone opens one up and hates it, I will gladly pay $125 for it in excellent condition with box and all that. Not to resell, just to use. :)

I called them a few minutes ago and they're closed.
I'll try first thing in the morning tomorrow.
Thanks!

They will be selling them to someone. Even if they give them to family/friends, those family/friends are no longer potential tablet buyers in the near term.

Could be good for Android software developers, but bad news for Android tablet manufacturers.

So has there been any talk about accessory deals? Seriously I can buy a keyboard and that charger for more than the actual tablet. What's up with that!

Also, Anyone know a good case that would fit on this thing? I know my brother said he saw people talking about one the other day that was made for the first Ipad that fit pretty well on this, but he forgot what it was.

Except when Amazon comes out with one in a while. I feel since they are the only ones with a developed and integrated media and app system (MP3, VOD, Apps) they have an advantage over pretty much any other Android tablet maker (even Google for the moment, since Youtube rental and music and are still testing and haven't been out for nearly as long as Amazons counterpart).

Sorry, but I don't see an Amazon tablet being the revolutionary device the Android community has been waiting for.

The problem for those hardware makers is that you simply can't put together a half-decent tablet for $99 especially if you plan to make any type of profit. Just the display alone in the TouchPad costs $70 for example.

No more webOS dominance trolling if you don't have a $99 TouchPad. You're not allowed.

Why not? It has the one thing Apple previously has only had unified and deployed. Do you just mean in terms of being moddable, custom installing, and the like? If that's the case, I can see your point. I mean in terms of being a non-iOS tablet than can survive, do well, and compete. Though I'm not trying to say Amazon crushes Apple or somethjing that dramatic, more being a distant, but stable and growing #2.

Idunno, it's just a feeling. Different market than the one they jumped into with the Kindle.

I'd have to see it.

Wow, it's over $300 just for the materials. I guess labor is another $10-12, And then they need to add shipping, packaging, marketing, and whatever cut it is that retailers get.

Android manufacturers cannot sell at a loss because everyone buys their apps/games from Google or Amazon. They don't own a store where they can sell stuff to make up the loss. Even then, a customer would need to buy over $300 of apps just for Google to make $100 from it's 30% cut of sales. And most of that money usually goes to upkeep of servers, paying for reviewers, editors' picks, etc.

I finally got an order confirmation for my $99 purchase at that HP education+army store on Friday.

Wow, I don't know if there was a limit on how much you could order Friday night, but I could have made $800's potentially after seeing these go for ~$300 on ebay. That would have taken a chunk out of the remaining tuition I have a to pay, lol...
