Apple gets the same kind of initial frenzy selling their tablet for $500+

I'm not trying to troll, but was there really this hysteria for ipads? I know people waited outside and all, but was it like this? And don't get me wrong, I realize after this weekend everything will be back to normal again.

That said, I don't know why, but I find this all very entertaining. Peoples' success and failure stories and the thrill of the chase. I have this thread and the corresponding CAG thread up and keep reading.

There were 2 weeks of over 200+ lines at every Apple Store in New York City.

Android development starting. If you have one and would like to help out, IRC: irc.andirc.net #touchdroid

There were lines forming as early as 5 am at the apple stores for well over a month.
Most of the time they didnt have it in stock, so people would just come back the next mornng.

I was in a line with 400 people at launch, for a slight upgrade to ipad 1. Xoom launched with 3 units at bestbuy, I was the only one online with my friend to pick one up.

Honeycomb never went AOSP though. I thought the NC port was based off some pre-release app development build.

So realistically, what's the next step for people who couldn't find one today? In about a week Amazon and HP will probably have them for sale again online, right?

Initial work will probably be gingerbread.. and once ICS goes AOSP.. that will probably get a port if they get this going.

I love how nobody wants a TouchPad for $400 but those same people will buy four of them for $100 each.

100 dollars for a comicbook reader, ereader, video watcher, email surfing, and internet surfing is a fucking steal vs the android equivalent at same price ($100)

No its not. Thats how things always work. Tech wise.

Edit: full disclosure. I own and ipad and i love it =.

most logical bet would be hoping hp.com sells them again. Amazon hasn't had it on sale yet so people like myself are hoping they get in on this. Obama needs to end his stupid vacation and get back in the White House to make a call to Amazon.

Nook Color is 2.3.5 with tablet tweaks that add softbuttons to the notification bar, like Honeycomb.

Ice Cream Sandwich should be AOSP, and the next version.

I don't know cause I don't have an Apple product...well, an old ipad. Also, weren't they were only sold at Apple stores at launch? That would help.

It's EXTREME COUPONING damnit!

I got my iPad 1 on launch day at a Best Buy. They were sold everywhere (Best Buy, Target, etc.) for iPad 2--there were websites set up for people to check Target stock. You're just trolling now under the guise of ignorance.

Some guy I talked to at a Walmart said he thinks that they might be getting more on Monday. I have no idea how this works but I guess you should call your local Walmart and ask if they are restocking.

Again, I have no idea how this process works. lol

Had a 32GB in my cart on officemax.com. Got all the way through checkout then hit submit.

Error.

Now item shows up as discontinued.

FUUUUUUUUUUUU

Back in stock at Amazon, now i'm just wondering if I should wait around for a potential price drop? I couldn't bring myself to spend $170+ at Sams Club when I really only want the 16gig.

Basically this happened to me only with the 16 gig. I'm really starting to get irate this is so stupid. Why won't Amazon just follow suit and drop the price already...

damn, i got confirmed store pickup/ready to be picked up at wal-mart but prolly won't be able to pick it up till 5-6pm tonight, while my order at a different wal-mart was cancelled.

i figure they either have it for me or they don't. its out of my hands. sorry guys, just kinda nervous.

I think the lesson is that the theory there is only a market for ipads, versus a tablet market thats real, has been blown out of the water.

Now the gulf between demand for a good, solid tablet at $100 and the ability to deliver that is still pretty huge, obviously, but thats the parameters for the race now. retina display and faster tech may be the wrong direction for the main thrust of this market.

Interesting. I was out at Walmart anyway this morning and walked over to electronics. I figured, what the hell, if they got one I'll pick it up.

Some fat pasty neckbeard douchebag was at the counter giving the lady behind the register a hard time. Apparently he was trying to get a $99, but the employee didn't know anything about it. So while she was trying to get a manager he was standing there making comments to whoever was with him "OH I KNOW THEY ARE GOING TO DO ANYTHING IN THEIR POWER NOT TO LET ME HAVE ONE", "WHY DON'T THEY HAVE SOMEONE INFORMED UP HERE", etc. etc.

Eventually they got it sorted. 1 16GB and two or three 32GBs were all they had in stock. Douchenozzle took his 16GB (he suddenly became all sunshine and roses "Oh, I NEVER get in on these sales, I'm so surprised!") and a couple of other people standing around suddenly decided they needed a Touchpad. lol

Of course, now I was interested to see if I could actually get one. Nothing at the Sams across the street or the other Walmart in the area. I didn't bother with anywhere else.

Oh well. If they come back online maybe I'll pick one up.

We are years before someone delivers a dual-core, 1gb ram, IPS tablet for $100. The materials cost for this device was more than the iPad 2.

No, the lesson is people go crazy for cheap shit and sales. It's why a Borders 'OUT OF BUSINESS EVERYTHING MUST GO' liquidation for 10 percent causes near riots and hollowed out stores.

Something going from $400 to $100 is going to get attention. And then of course you get to the people buying to flip them....

The four walmarts near me just got wiped cleaned in the past 45 minutes according to the website.

wow.

Also kudos to the ADF on your assembly.

Damn, I would have connections at Office Max but my brother got fired from there last month, lol. I called them and the manager said that the touchpads are being "recalled". I specifically asked whether or not they plan on selling them and he said no (a little apprehensively though).

hmm i kinda like this webOS. lol

I bought the Touchpad for my mom and I have a Transformer for myself. This Touchpad isn't bad at all.

I went in search of at least one 32GB so I can return the 32GB I bought on launch day to Best Buy...

I ordered one 16gb and one 32gb from Micro Center this morning. 16gb already cancelled, 32gb not cancelled yet but not optimistic...

Went to Walmart when I realized my Micro Center order was gonna get cancelled. Got there one minute after they opened, a swarm of 6 people came in and bought every single 32GB (and tried to buy the demo unit, LOL)...however the price had not adjusted yet.

I stayed and got a coffee at the McDonald's, when I left 45 minutes later they were still waiting to see if the price was going to get adjusted...

Went to Office Depot, the only one that showed any stock on the website. Waited 30 minutes, talked to an employee who said they were all out.

Went to Sam's Club, got excited when I got one of the cardboard placeholder things with the UPC code. As I waited in line, the cashier looked up and said "oh, we are sold out of those..." As I walked out, I could hear some of the workers talking about it...

Went to Staples, was first in line there, but right before they opened, one of the employees said the only units that they had in stock were damaged returns...I think there were at least two groups of people here waiting for Touchpads...

While in line there, I ordered from HP Small/Medium business, at full price :p On the phone now to make sure that gets corrected.

Managed to order one from Office Max just now, too.

I think I am done now. I may have extras, depending on what happens (still don't have any in hand from today), so we'll see...

Did anyone make the official webOS tweak hack whatever thread? I could give it a go if no one else has done it yet...

I like how I can see the touch digitizer at certain angles.

I think there are different screen/digitizers on these things. I totally can't see the digitizer on mine at all...but I have seen pictures of other people's and the digitizer is super obvious.

I find this whole situation very interesting. At my BestBuy in Ottawa, Canada, there were about 50 units in stock at 8:30PM when I got there. Me and another guy were the first to pick ours up. Apparently by 9 (closing time), all stores in Ottawa were sold out. It goes to show how far word of mouth goes.
