I am addicted to Spelunky!

Today's daily challenge ended with me being whittled down to 0 health (from 17 or 18) by a lone shopkeeper in the City of Gold, one that I could've completely avoided if I wasn't so gung ho. Still making the bozo mistakes after a (for me at least) stellar February.

Bought the game a week ago cuz of Keplek's videos, the game looks so easy if you watch someone else playing it, looks like an HD super mario world x montezuma (Atari), piece of cake game, well, the game is kicking my ass, fucking arrow traps, fucking totem/spikes traps, fucking yetis playing ping-pong with my body against the wall.

i'm stuck in the third level (blue level).

218 kills in 23 hours.

You should not be going anywhere near them yeti's!

Try to go into Ice Caves with at least a shotgun (+ Jetpack would be ideal). Get used to robbing the Black Market. It is better to do the final levels with the huge amount of items a good Black Market can give you (with shopkeepers aggroed), than going in with less items

Dont rush. Think out each move. The ghost does not come that quick, and you have time to plan ahead without rushing..

I am so excited! I made it to Hell for the first time! Fuck yes!

I added the City of Gold and Hell to my journal as well as Anubis 2 and the Book of the Dead. Unfortunately I didn't make it too far into Hell as I drowned in lava right inside the entrance room when I didn't pump the gas fast enough while trying to avoid a demon who was already dead. I even had a Mattock to go a different way. Oh bugger.

I also got a new high score. I didn't have a baseball mitt though and only had like 12 bombs. But still I'd love to get to Yama. And I had angry shopkeepers on my tail the whole time. (I found a shotgun in an early mines level and it was just so obvious what I needed to do.) And even went to the Black Market.

Next goal is to get to Yama and finally tackle the Mothership and actually get the Plasma Gun.

I did fuck up the daily for yesterday though. Was doing great until I veered left when dropping in the jungle and made myself a meal for a hungry plant. I can't believe I did it either because the platform was directly below me.

Video will of course come later. One of my proudest achievements.

Man, I could have had a good run on today's PC daily challenge if I didn't screw it up in the Black Market. A shopkeeper ran from offscreen and killed me. I should have been continuously shooting. Oh well.

Also, it was the first time I got the kapala but I'm not sure how I'm supposed to collect blood for it. I was killing enemies up close to catch their blood droplets but it didn't seem like I was catching them. Maybe it's because I'm using the PRO UI and the kapala icon is very small so I can't see it filling up.

You have to actually catch the three or so blood droplets that come out of hurting/killing an enemy. If you never catch the droplets then the cup doesn't do anything. The drops don't disappear right away, so you have the chance to chase them down.

I just realized that even if you defeat Olmec, and are on your way to Hell, you need to beat Hell in order to count it as a "win". So if you beat Olmec and exit through his door, it counts as a win. If you beat Olmec then go on to beat Yama, it counts as a win. If you beat Olmec and die before beating or even getting to Yama, it doesn't count as a win.

Damn. So I've beaten Olmec thrice. But only won twice. It never really occurred to me.

You need 8 drops for a heart.

The daily challenge of the 11th (PC). Made it all the way to 5-3, then suddenly:

I'm still bungling about with my unwarranted nonchalance...

Beat Yama for the first time and got the big money/entire gang trophy simultaenously

Feels gud :D

Wonder what I'm missing for Seen it all.. :/

Is there anything special to do to cause characters to appear for unlocking? I think I only have one character left to unlock (I think the one in the City of Gold) but I didn't see him anywhere when I went there yesterday.

Also wish you could get the succubus entry without having it kill you (I assume, I haven't gotten it yet).

You can get any entry by killing it as well.

You can just check the journal to see what you're missing.

Just blast any damsels you see with a shotgun from far away. You don't even need to set them off (and getting near one is not worth the possible one heart for rescuing).

I know that feel. Was my one and only hell run so far too!
I'm going to have to look up what I'm missing, I know Mother Brain is one, but there's another one or too I'm missing.

Edit: oh great I've got to die in the acid? :(

You only need to take damage (but will possibly die anyway). That was my last journal entry to get, pretty easy.

I'll try blowing it up from underneath and see what happens. I try not to enter the worm too much.

I think I must have the spike ball entry despite never being killed in Hell. (Thank you, Mummy puke!)

Yeah, I didn't see the character there too when I got there yesterday. But the one in Olmec's lair was in it the first time I got to him. So he must have been in there somewhere. Since the entrance and exit were on the same side I didn't even venture to the other side. That's probably where he was.

Edit: oh great I've got to die in the acid? :(
I bet I haven't gotten that one either. Maybe I have. I've swam in it before to get the Crysnife but don't remember if I was in it long enough. I don't assume "destroying" a pool of liquid counts as adding it.

I think that would just drain it. Just hop in the acid for a quick dip and try to get back out. The worm is easy enough to get to, just do a suicide run quick.
Hell, if you've unlocked the Jungle, you can get there easy by just using the shortcut. Or the Ice Caves if you prefer. Either one.

Ok

I'm missing;

Monster: 20, 39
Item: 14
Trap: 6

I'm pretty sure what monster 20 and item 14 are
big fish and sacrifice knife?

Could someone please indicate what trap 6 is? And perhaps monster 39 (guessing it's something in the mothership)

Trap 6 is where the Crysknife is :)
39 is the alien tank, surprised you've not got that if you have the others.

Hm, I'll try to get to the City of Gold again and try looking again for the character. Need to verify that's the one I'm missing to be sure. Also didn't know you could get the succubus one before they transformed, but I will try that in Hell when I make it there again.

I have just 2 or 3 entries total missing from the adventure guide, may post the ones I'm missing in here once I'm home.

Only missing 39 now - you're going down stupid tank driver

Edit: i've seen it all! :)

Was that your last achievement? Or do you still have Speedlunky?

Still need Speedlunky, yeah.. I dread it a bit, because for some reason I tend to fuck up on resource-less Olmec kills :(

I have a few I'm missing too. Old Bitey is definitely one of them. I avoid the water pool whenever possible. One of theses days though I'll go down with a Jetpack and shotgun and take everything out.

WOOOOOOOO! FUCK YOU OLMEC! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

It took me like 19 hours on the pc and probably another 10 on the vita, but i finally killed you! Didnt even think i would make it. Shops had nothing but bombs, so no jetpack or climbing guns to make the caves easier. Had one life going into 4-2, somehow beat the last 3 levels with 1 life and then i applied everything i knew to Olmec and i finally beat him. Wooo! Yama, im coming for you!

Can anyone help?

Also don't know what character I have left to unlock. I just see a lock with a 1 on it. I have all the ones I see in a guide... ?_?

EDIT: Ok got my book filled! Just gotta figure out why it's saying I'm missing a character, don't see any that I don't have.

EDIT2: I'm missing Yellow. Oy. Not sure of an easy way to get their coffin to spawn.

EDIT3: Got her in the Temple :D

Just did pretty well on the Daily. Failed though because the Temple sucked ass, but I got the Plasma Gun finally! I didn't even bother with the Queen or Lords. I bombed from underneath and took it. Almost forgot it when I forgot to let the shopkeeper pass by me. I only went into the Mothership because I got knocked onto some spikes by a fucking bat in the Jungle and wasted my Ankh. So disappointed. Especially since I had a Jetpack and was well on my way to the City of Gold again.

Best part is I didn't kill myself with the Plasma Gun. I've watched enough people play to know how to handle it. I forgot how much kickback it had, but I was happy to trade in my shotgun for it. (I actually purchased the shotgun in the 1-2 shop because 1-1 had SO MUCH MONEY.) But for some reason there
ARE NOT MANY BOMBS AT ALL
IN TODAY'S DAILY CHALLENGE. Especially in the Black Market which
only has 6 total
. (Spoilered just in case. You might want to read though.) Oh, and today's Daily also
doesn't have hardly any Kali altars. So don't count on getting a Kapala easily. Plus some Damsels are tucked away and one Jungle level has 3/4 blocked off with a straight shot to the exit, which coupled with the lack of bombs makes it pretty shitty.
(That part of the spoilers is optional.)

Also, since I bought my gun in the Mines, when I got to the Black Market I forgot I had bought it and thought I was already on the wanted list. So I decided to take them all out. I'm getting good at massacring shopkeepers.

From the looks at my Journal I am only missing the following:

Monsters:
Old Bitey
Vlad
Imp
Devil
Succubus
Horsehead
Ox Face
Yama (Pretty much all Hell specific enemies and one big old fish)

Traps:
Acid (Easy I'll just go into the Worm during a fun run)

Items:
Sheild (I remember knocking it out of his hands once but he got it back before I could get to it)
Vlad's Amulet
Vlad's Cape

That's it.

And the only characters I'm missing are Golden Monk and Yang for obvious reasons.

Had 12+ health again too thanks to the invigoration buff, much like yesterday...

There's an indication that tells you which one's real or not. If the damsel is real, it'll take 8 seconds per help cry / dog yelp. If it's a succubus, 4 seconds.

Can anyone help?

Not that it really matters since you've already unlocked her, so this is aimed at anyone anyone else not certain about the criteria for specific characters. There's one of each per world and that's excluding the likes of the Golden Buddha / Monk or Yang where you need to reach a specific stage or finish the game via one of two endings.

At least you showed Anubis who wears the pants in Spelunky.

Any tip on speedlunky?

I think I'm overdoing it, trying to speed to much. I usually clear the mines in a minute, but struggle a bit with some patterns in the jungle and temple, especially tiki trap heavy sections etc. Caves can be tricky sometimes, compass helps a lot of course.

Any general input on solid strategy for spending time in each area? I only pick up gear and damsels along the way, don't bother about gold of course, only buy stuff if I happen to have money and a particularly useful item (compass - which is often cheap enough anyway).

So you have 8 mins, I figures:

Mines: 1 min (~15 sec per level target)
Jungle: 2 mins (~30 sec per level target)
Caves: 1 min (~15 sec per level target)
Temple: 2 mins (~40 sec per level target, sometimes the temple levels are pretty prolix)
Olmec: ~ 1 min

1 min breathing space

Your doing good keep it up eventually you'll get a good seed it took me 3 days playing two hours a day to get speedlunky.

I got speedlunky like a month ago, and yeah honestly the jungle was always by far the hardest part for me unless I was lucky enough to have a jetpack. Only two pieces of advice I really have is if you're fortunate enough to get a shop that has one, always steal the jetpack no questions asked, even though that's probably obvious. And save as many bombs as you can for the temple so you can use them liberally there, since going through it straightforward is hard enough without speedrunning it

Ugh. It is impossible to get killed by Old Bitey unless you take out all the other fish first. Fucking hell. Even when he locks you into place, all the other ones take priority in biting.

Also, WTF I ended up getting a dead level but no castle. Instead I got a damn beehive.

All I need is Old Bitey and the Shield to fill out my Journal up to the Hell point. I played the Jungle shortcut so many times and only got a dead level twice, but never a castle. And the water level is just so hard to get a setup that will let you easily take out the piranha's first.

You can't. There's hundreds of piranha so you have to lure them all into one spot, which is super hard. You can't just go down to Old Bitey because he's guarded by so many helpers, all of which have a higher Z-index and thus hurt you first. So even if I'm right on top of Old Bitey, as he swims, his helpers all come and gather around my location first. Which results in you getting killed by a Piranha, not Old Bitey. Maybe if I can get sticky bombs and suicide bomb him. Though if I die first, I don't think it'll count. And I'm pretty sure he takes more than one bomb.

I did it that way, first try. I went down with two hearts, let a fish touch me and swam over to the old buggar while I was invincible

And Fuck speedlunky, made it to right near the entrance to Olmec in 5:28 and some shit hit me and I fell in a pool. Buggerbuggerbugger

The stuff you can pull off in this game impresses me sometimes. It's not often you have a setup like this.

An idol sits waiting on its platform. To the left there was an altar. To the right a shop. If I'm not fast enough all hell will break loose. I could easily get the golden monkey, but why wait around for my money when I can get it instantly?

i0SSmcOMTFwp0.gif

And that is how that is done.

In that same run I made it all the way to the City of Gold only to get crushed by a Thwomp. Didn't even get the book or find the Golden Man character. So sad.

(Most people don't realize the shopkeeper will give you the full value of any idol immediately. The first time I accidentally dropped one into a shop I thought he stole it from me.)

Monkey gives you somewhere in between 10k - 14k gold total though, whereas the idol only grants you 5k in the Mines. If you have the mobility to pull it off and if you want to maximize your gold on for example a pacifist run, then it's worth the wait. Just need to make sure the monkey doesn't kill itself with nearby spikes or that you can drop it in a little ditch / narrow floor.

When you have limited time and no way to dodge the ghost it's usually more risky to use the monkey. Especially if you're already at a minute and still need to get the Eye and the exit. I chose the path that made the most sense at the time.

It also has a stopping point and may or may not be anywhere near 10K. Usually about $5-6K. It only poops out gold nuggets ($100 in the Mines) or tiny gems. ($200, $300 or $400 each in the Mines) It would take forever to get to $10,000. I'm pretty sure it's very rare that it would get anywhere near that much. Even with the rate of inflation it would still be more logical to trade it in at a shop if you need quick cash.

Ah, didn't know that. Still, the risk in taking a damsel to the exit in Hell for one measly heart is hardly worth it. Shotgun to the face for everyone!

Yep, I kinda live by the creed of whatever I have going into hell is pretty much what I've got for the rest of the run outside of the amulet and the bomb boxes Yama's henchmen drop. No matter how many times I make it there I still get a little nervous, especially layouts with a ton of damn spike balls when I'm low on bombs
