I am addicted to Spelunky!

I find the PS4 version really hard to play, the analog sticks are really imprecise, I keep falling off things and being unable to navigate well.

I can sprint permanently on Vita and make every jump perfectly. Very odd.

Wait what? The sticks on vita are not even in the saMe league ds4 sticks when it comes to precision

I finally broke the 400,000 barrier in yesterday's daily, which netted me 31st place (there may have been a couple of hours left to go when I last checked).

Anyway, getting to hell is still extremely rare, and if I'm on a daily, I'm more likely to just take the 50,000 bonus for beating the game (which in itself isn't very common).

Is the PS4 version a separate leaderboard?

Aside from the dpad I'd recommend switching the controls to sprint by default if you haven't.

First time playing Spelunky in months.
Don't make it to the mines. Dies on 2nd level. "Alright Spelunky! I've got your number! I'm gonna go fast this time to learn fast". Dies on 3rd level. It took an hour to get to the jungle. It's like learning how to play all over again T_T

You have that kick ass DS4 d-pad right under your thumb and you're using a stick on this game? C'mon man!

what's the secret to "getting" this game? I've tried once on PS3 and now PS4 but it isn't clicking. seems like a finicky game. should I keep going? any tips?

Was this game free on vita and ps4 this month or was I mistaken?

Edit: nvm. Checked the store. Downloading now. :D

It's just a matter of playing it a lot. After a while you know exactly how your character handles, when you can make a jump, when you can't... You'll learn enemy behaviours, how to best avoid each type of obstacle, how to best use each type of item, etc.

Thank the heavens for this game. I was able to drop Destiny and now I just dropped Shadow of Mordor (gets repetitive). This game should hold me over till GTA V.

I don't know if this is popular advice, but it helped me to watch some Let's Plays to see how a player who wasn't constantly dying in the mines handled the game. I'm still pretty bad at the game, but I at least got over the hump of feeling that the game was punishingly difficult to now enjoying every death and learning from it.

I really like the daily challenge replay feature added to the PS4 version. Anybody feel free to add me on PSN: madmook
Random question, but does the game ever end, or is it one where you see how a far you can make it?
There is an end but it doesn't take long to get through it all. After beating the game it just becomes replays to get a better score or time.

i went to
hell
today for the first time,i had the jetpack, 10 bombs, 4 ropes, the fucking ball and chain from SMB3 killed me :(

I downloaded this on my PS4 and played it a little bit. Died a couple times on the first level and stopped. Worst game I ever played, 4/10.

I'll probably try to actually play the game after I'm finished getting my last weapon in Destiny :>.

The move to analogue stick as people's preference is a curious one. A decade of Xbox gaming has really made people expect little from anything but the analogue stick, but it's sad to see the DualShock 4's dpad left fallow because of Microsoft relegating the dpad to something unusable.

Mh, first time I played Spelunky... it was ok. Charming and I enjoy the freedom of making my way through the levels as I like it.

I must say I probably should not enjoy slowly turning the pages of the books/journal via the DS4 touchpad as much as I do :P

So anyway, the PS4 version of Spelunky has a pretty bad bug in it!

I happily started the Daily Challenge, bent down to pick up an item but when I pressed square to pick it up, nothing happened. That was odd, thinks I, then I press X and all hell breaks loose. Somehow, all of the controls had become mapped to the X button, including run, so I jumped and whipped and threw ropes and bombs all at the same time! As you can imagine, it is not an efficient way to play Spelunky.

Disaster.

At one point I try to whip a pot but accidentally go through a door because, naturally, that's mapped to X as well!

I just noticed that it has changed the HUD as well from what I had, and probably the damsel. Bizarre.

Wat!
And why is the controls option not available?

Actually I could see a 'single button run' becoming a challenge for some of the Spelunky nuts if it's not already.

So I just found out the opening lines are kinda randomly generated (from a given set) too. O.o

I thought it was just a different paragraph each time but apparently there are 3 lines in the opening and each is picked from a random set of 10 lines. Thought that was pretty cool.

Never noticed cause I mash the fuck out of the X button every time the game loads. :P

D-pad being the only way to play Spelunky is nothing but a load of bullshit. The analog stick is perfectly fine.

Yes, it's 95% (Scientifically tested accurate statistic) as good as the d-pad in most situations, and it is possible to adapt to its imperfections and still perform very well.

The d-pad being better is not bullshit though.

Sounds great in theory, previous glitches have become part of the game so maybe this will.
It probably won't though so if anybody knows of somebody streaming such attempts please link to it.

At what time does the Daily reset? I played at around 10pm EST last night, but this morning it said I had already attempted it. So was I playing the challenge of the 9th early, or is the challenge from the 8th going late?

Thanks lol

The video I posted a few posts ago is today's (the 9th's) challenge, so you should be able to tell from that.

I think they change at midnight GMT.

Have been playing this a bit now that it's free on PS+, and I like it! Definitely not a pro yet, but I can see myself playing this a lot going forward.

Holy shit, I've had Spelunky for a year and just realized that I can aim my throws. I've been using the default horizontal throw this whole time. Taking down bats and placing sticky bombs just got WAY easier. I don't think it's any coincidence that my first run with this new knowledge was also my best one yet. This is a game changer.
