I can't get over how bad Metal Gear Solid is

The dialogue felt like it was written by a 15 year old virgin in an honors English class.

The often cheesy, frequently overly-expository style of MGS dialog is one of the more beloved trappings of the series.
But, more than that, I find it funny that you're mocking writing when you make statements like that and expect there to be any actual weight behind them.

Truly no one can formidably command the written word unless they know what a boob feels like, right?

The MGS series isn't for everyone. I never thought the gameplay was very good and I played it when it was pretty new, around 99 or 2000, gameplay gets better as the aeries goes on, but the story becomes even more nonsensical for the most part.

yeh the tryhard philosophy stuff doesn't get any better. it's like that the entire time from I to IV.

OP, you can go play IV and Rising at least. the former ain't a strict action game but you can force yourself to not go stealth

The game that got me into stealth was Splinter Cell Blacklist. Since then I've played Dishonored and the Arkham games. Nothing has topped Blacklist though in terms of pure stealth.

Holy shit, Blacklist was not pure stealth. Play Chaos Theory then get back to us on your extensive experience with the genre.

are you really trying to compare a ps1 game to modern stealth games?

1. I think the stealth is great. You can of course shoot everyone but there are no kill no alert runs out there for you to watch. So gut gud is valid here.

2. It's neither bad nor good... This could be controversial but keep in mind that the series is OLLLLD.

3. A controversial topic as well, but I agree with you. It's BAD for at least 90% of the game.

4.No comment.

5.You must have not play many games...

*Note that I didn't play every game in the series.
*Your body needs to be ready, MGS fanboys/girls are notorious. (run)

Uh.
These aren't stealth games you're listing. Blacklist can be played as an action stealth game, but the reason so many people mind conviction/blacklist is they aren't really pure stealth games.

5. Solid Snake. This must be the worst main character I can remember. His voice is ridiculous, but the real problem is that he is nothing like he should be. They say he is a combat legend who only cares about surviving, but then he falls in love with a girl he has know for all of 5 minutes. And at the end of the game, he is unable to pull the trigger at a critical moment.

This guy must be on team B.

I loved Blacklist, but it wasn't pure stealth.

Chaos Theory is the best in that regard for Splinter Cell, and MGS3 is second as far as pure stealth gameplay.

Plus you are comparing an almost 20 year old game that kind of invented 3rd person stealth with games released in the last 5 years.

Blacklist as pure stealth? Whhooooo boy, you got some splainin' to do!

When is the last time you people have played MGS? I literally just finished it tonight. I went in with an open mind (afterall, I committed to $30 for the Legacy Collection) and I was extremely disappointed.

As for my comment about the writing being done by a 15 year old virgin, I am talking about the discussions of love in the game, as well as how the characters fell in love with people they didn't even know. Am I supposed to laugh at Otacon's love for Sniper Wolf? It didn't seem that way at the end of the game, but it was really pathetic.

You don't know what you're missing OP.

I totally agree that the cheesy and weird story/dialogue is a part of the MGS soul so to say, but I think it's fair to critique it since it is weird/bad and there is a ton of it. It's something people either love or hate. Personally I think Kojima and the other writers have the right idea but really need an editor or someone to take it from Japanese to English in a better way then what has previously happened with the series.

absolutely do not play the rest of the series if that's how you felt about MGS1.
People will try to convince you that 3 is better, but it builds off the first game. It's too similar. Just skip the series altogether.

If you don't like the most revered entry in the series, its clearly not for you.

Give your friend his ps3 and legacy collection back and move on to fifa or something.

Excuse my ignorance, I plan to get into the series eventually as I respect what it is, (Barely played the spin off Metal Gear Acid and loved it) but whats wrong with twin snakes?

Do you really think the game is beloved just because of nostalgia glasses?

Because that's what you're implying. And that's wrong. MGS is still worth playing today.

The controls are clunky though yes, but that's expected with it's age.

Blacklist is actually a really great stealth game. You can ghost the whole thing.

You can, which is great, but the game makes it hard at points due to its design. I would probably rank Blacklist 3rd as a great stealth game, but only when you play pure ghost.

I play it at least a few times a year. It's literally why I still play games. If it didn't come along when it did I would've left this hobby.

Those games wouldn't even exist without MGS.

And Arkham? Mentioned in a series of sentences about stealth games?

You can criticise a game all you want, but when you base your argument on empty insults to one of the most revolutionary games in the gaming industry, you damn will should expect the back lash to hit hard.

Blacklist can be played as a pure stealth game as well. In fact, it is probably one of, if not the best, stealth game that I have played. And I say this as a huge fan of Metal Gear Solid.

Having said that, OP your opinion is incorrect.

MGS1 is one of the first examples of 'actually good' voice acting and to call it trash is coming at the game with a modern mindset. In the context of the year it came out, MGS1 was mindblowing and perhaps trying out the more modern MGS3 or MGS5 will suit OP better.

I just played mgs for the first time last month (my introduction to the series). One of my best gaming experiences ever.

One question, were you riding off with Otacon into the sunset?

Oh boy.
Well, I played MGS1 a year or two ago, probably two.
Also, virgin isn't an insult, neither is someones age, please don't use either as a valid point. And Otacon has some issues, we know, but that's who he is. You can't have perfect characters. Characters who are 100% methodical and without flaw can be unnerving. See sociopath playthroughs of alpha protocol.
And re: love people they don't know...
Did you miss everything about love blooming on the battlefield?
