I just played Horizon Zero Dawn and...wow | Impressions Thread

Here is some off screen gameplay I just found https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Celas5Tv5Dc

Not sure if it's just a re-upload of the link posted earlier (which is now private) though

Wow, this is indeed looking so fluid and gorgeous. And to realize this is a seemless open world. If I am not mistaken, this is still pre-alpha material. This is easily my most anticipated game.

I just happened to watch another glowing impression on a French site in which some swimming mechanics can be seen; link: http://www.jeuxvideo.com/videos/rep...ro-dawn-la-bombe-de-l-annee-2017-bgs-2016.htm

Uncharted 4's climbing doesn't really interest me. I found it very simple. That being said, the animations were fsntastic, making it fun to watch. In U4 it's a prominet part of the gameplay, but if it's not something common in HZD then it can serve as a nice distraction here and there. I enjoy games having more and more maneuverability options.

The combat looked solid at the video. The things I'm wondering about are the writing, quests and map design.

Has the main character learned to shut up? That was my biggest issue with the gameplay demos I've seen.

For the millionth time, his was just for the E3 demos. For a gaming enthusiast forum this place is damn clueless at times. She is talking about actions the player hadn't even made yet. Every developer does this year after year and still people bring this up. Why not complain about God mode or infinite ammo in E3 demos while we are it.

A few visual hitches that I'm sure will be touched up before release. Been hearing way too many good things about this game. So excited for it.

Aloy swimming time at 2:23, first time I see that :D

For those who doesn't understand french, the journalist had a blast with the game, praising not only the visuals but also the gameplay because of all the different tools and the weakpoint system for all the ennemies. He was also suprised by how fast he got used to the gameplay even though it was his first time with it.

"La bombe de l'année 2017?"

That doesnt sound good.

Yeah I don't mind if the climbing is simplistic, it's an RPG, not a platformer. All the gameplay is in the combat and game systems (eg crafting).

Off screen video looked great too.

Literally just went onto Amazon and preordered it because of this thread.

I didn't pre-order it after E3 last year for whatever reason. But I'm totally convinced now LOL.

Not gonna lie, every time I scroll by this thread: hype builds.

It's coming soon. It's getting more real. I can't wait to try this game!

Just played at BGS too. The animations and the grass looks so good. But it was a 15 minutes demo and not so much to play. It was a pretty small area and you couldn't see any constructions. There was 2 or 3 types of enemies. So, the demo shows a LOT of promises and a LITTLE amount of content.

I'm looking forward to play but I am far from being amazed with the game.

I hope it's more The Witcher 3 and less Far Cry 3/4.

The game producer Daimion Pinnock reffered exactly to Witcher 3 as an major reference to Aloy's habilities, weapons and itens. The melee combat and the dashes was a lot similar to Witcher 3 too.

Also got to play and it's shaping up pretty well so far. The types of weapons and traps are varied, and it felt like a nice progression from far cry primal, another game I really enjoyed. I hope the story is good!

I find it fascinating.

Just looking at the footage and hearing the audio. You hear no repeated dialogue, everything anticipated by the narrator before it happens.

And then your first thought is to think to yourself: "yeah, sure 10 minutes of non-repeated procedurally selected dialogue in 15 minutes of gameplay is likely and I don't like it."

But yeah, as you say in one word: clueless.

"La bombe de l'année 2017?"

That doesnt sound good.

"bomb" in french means "fucking great"

not like in english where it means it sucked/underwhelmed

basically hes saying horizon is gonna be a big heavy hitter this year. And the game looks just like that

This was the game that I felt finally justified the purchase of a PS4 for me. Until I bought a gtx 1070. Now I'm just going to be watching and weeping from the other side

Watching that footage, I thought it was really cool to see that the quick menu where you choose your gear, had the option for crafting ammo right there with the weapons itself, if you watch. There were times where he just cycles through, makes a few pieces of ammo for the given gear, and then equips it, and it tells you what components it requires to make the type of ammo it uses.

That's the type of really good thinking that I appreciate for efficiency when I'm playing a game like this, not having to cycle through menus just to go through ammo and such.

Really nice feature.

This game has me so hyped. New gameplay looks great. The combat seems so awesome, with each enemy having patterns and tells like a boss or something would.

I still can't shake the feeling of worry, since Guerilla isn't the type of developer where you can just blindly assume the game's going to be at least good, like you would with ND or someone like that. However, I'm not wallowing in that worry. I'm just going to enjoy the heck out of what I see and hope for the best.

A 'bomb' can also mean fucking great in english. But it hasn't been used in english vocalublary like that since the early 90s when LL Cool J was still relevant

Oohh thanks for that, interesting footage. I hope the fact that he got used to the gameplay real quick is because the controls are fluid, responsive and intuitive, and not because the gameplay is dumbed down, haha. But it does sound like the former and not the latter, so that's looking good.

"La bombe de l'année 2017?"

Yeah as others have said it means "it's the bomb", rather than "it's gonna bomb". :P The reporter is bubbling with positive feedback and enthusiasm pretty much the whole time. He even acknowledges that sometimes, on the floor the gameplay looks great but it's a disappointment when the game comes out due to no long-term appeal, but he's really feeling it this time and expects a GOTY 2017 contender.

Glad to hear the animation and combat and controls are good, at least. Could they break the curse of bad action RPG combat for western games, at least? xD Let's just hope the quests are good. Please be good...

There is also a nifty feature in the game where if you are trying to craft some epic piece of equipment or armor or even a more mundane item and you have all the items you need but one or have 9 out of 10 of a certain item and don't want to rely on the randomly generated nature of certain drops you can hit a button and the game will generate a quest in game for you that will be a simple bit of work and will reward you with the part or item you were looking for at the end of the short quest chain, no randomness involved. Its a really simple but ingenious idea when you don't want to grind anymore. A lot of smart decisions and ideas are present in this game.

Don't watch FFXV gameplay shortly before/after this. It's good GG's got the DoF defocus blurring anything that gets right up in the camera lens, like MGSV, too.

Some of the straight grasses animate a bit stiff and fast though, hopefully Guerrilla fix that!
