I miss Snowboarding games. What happened?

Now that I think about it, wasn't there a GAF thread a few months ago for a skiing/snowboarding game for PC that is currently in early access?

There is a new Cryengine F2P game called Snow that is coming out. I think they are doing snowboards eventually, but they do have skis for now.

I would caution people that the game is still in a very early state.

Yep, see above.

I would love a next gen Amped. I loved Amped 3, good mechanics and an absurd "story" made the game fairly memorable for the genre. Will never happen though.

I guess they went to the same place where now all the JetSki-Racing-Games are (water based in general). They probably have a party there together with my childhood.

Yeah, sad times.

On a similar note what happened to BMX games?

They were deemed "not successful enough" next to Tony Hawk, and I'm pretty sure I remember reading something about the consoles of the day (i.e. the PS1) not really being powerful enough to properly simulate the physics of a bike and rider.

I mean, look at Dave Mirra and Matt Hoffman, neither of them are particularly excellent translations of the sport. Dave Mirra came the closest and is still quite playable today, but it's unbelievably janky and the physics are just nonsensical. The Matt Hoffman game was just a joke.

I would love to see someone do for BMX what Skate did for skateboarding. There's a mind-boggling amount of exciting potential there.

Again, too much of a niche sport though. It was kind of a minor miracle that Tony Hawk's did as well as it did, and that success sparked a new wave of people taking up the sport. That in turn meant that skateboarding essentially had its "moment in the limelight" that made it viable for videogame development: i.e. we wouldn't have had Skate, the best skateboarding videogame ever made, if it weren't for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater.

I doubt this could ever be achieved for BMX, and we're pretty much doomed to never have a good approximation of BMX in videogame form.

Snowboard kids was the best and first game was one of the more successful N64 titles but its future is nonexistent.

Even though Racdym/Racjin made first three games , Atlus as IP holders felt need to reboot game and got random mobile developers to create DS game and that pretty much was end of the series.Game was pretty awful and broken with mechanics that aren't present in past games. The choices for this game didn't improve anything and characters were different people in general.

Atlus will never talk about the series again after that game bombed.

I would KILL for a PS4 remaster of SSX 3.

And hopefully they make a new one. The new SSX was decent but the courses weren't distinct enough or memorable. And I need some better character dialogue ala Tricky and 3.

The secret with the Shaun White Snowboarding games is you want to play the wii versions

I played 'em. It's pretty fun with the balance board, but I thought the game design overall was kind of middling. Not much variety, half the characters are useless, track layout is okay, fairly simplistic gameplay, which isn't necessarily bad, it's just not amazing.

GAF never dissapoints.

That's because NeoGAF isn't just one person with one opinion. :p

Absolutely loved 1080 on the N64. Felt like I was controlling the rider and not the snowboard for once. Really wonderful game.

That's an interesting way of putting it, actually. Personally, I could never perfect 1080's controls, so even now, I always fall off the board when doing jumps that are even somewhat high. Yet, for some reason, I still have tons of fun with the game...

I've always wanted to try the new ssx game and it's on sale on psn right now
but since you can only buy psn bucks 20 euros at a time (and the game is 10) that is not going to happen:\

maybe I can find it second hand in a gamestore or something (does it have an online pass since it's an ea game?)

I believe it was down to Tony Hawks Skateboarding & then extreme sports became in vogue.

The late 90's was all about alternative culture & sports, the 2000's shifted that excitement somewhere else & that was the end.

Yeah, Tony Hawk Pro Skater couldn't have hit at a better time. It came out a month after Tony completed the first 900 at the X-Games in 1999. That event received a lot of coverage due to him doing that, which led to a lot of media coverage and interest in the sport. That also boosted the popularity of other similar sports and the games associated with them. Of course that was only part of it because the games in general were really good and I doubt most people that enjoyed them really had any interest in snowboarding or skaterboarding on their own. So, I think that they could be popular today if they hit the same notes as the older games.

Snowboarding isnt considered cool anymore by mainstream people. It's all about parkour, and even that trend is fading away.

Same thing that happened to the Tycoon games. Remember all the stupid ones? People couldn't keep track of which ones were good, so they just avoided them all.

Now, if only this were true for all the generic FPS games............

No way, man. Snowboarding will always be cool. This is one of those genres that never fades because there's nothing else like it and it always has the potential to deliver.

It's too bad Microsoft didn't port any of the Amped games over to PC/Steam.

Of course, they would have been infected with GFWL at the time and soon to be rendered inaccessible.

I feel like the new SSX was the sports last chance of making a return, but it turned out too crap. EA basically EA-ified it. Just like they did def jam. Basically they had something great, something crazy, something fun. And then took it all out to make something repetitive. With SSX they took the wacky over the top tracks and PERFECT controls, and changed it to their crappy analogue trick system (and the old system felt borked even if you switched to it)

I don't see them ever returning tbh. Not unless EA take another crack at it and do it like everyone wanted them to from the get-go. i.e SSX tricky 2

Snowboard Kids - The first two games were great but the DS one was developed by a different team and it destroyed the series because it was shit.

Status - The developer and publisher of the first two games are are still around so a new game could happen but it's unlikely. It's probably seen as relic of the past not worth bringing back in their eyes.

1080 Snowboarding - Nintendo EAD developed the original and it was awesome. The sequel on GameCube was done by NST and wasn't so good. The chances of a Nintendo EAD developed 1080 game are next to zero and a NST developed one is also highly unlikely.

Status - Dormant until Nintendo decides to randomly outsource it someday.

Cool Boarders - UEP Systems did Cool Boarders 1/2/Code Alien but went under in 2001. Idol Minds did Cool Boarders 3/4/2001 but don't do much these days other than port Ratchet & Clank titles.

Status - Dead.

Amped - Indie Built who were responsible for the series went under after Amped 3.

Status - Dead.

SSX - The original SSX trilogy was amazing, On Tour was a let down and Blur was just a remix of the first three games. SSX 2012 was shit.

Status - Alive although it's clear whoever made SSX 2012 didn't work on SSX Tricky/3. I doubt we've seen the last of SSX although don't expect anything soon.

What happened to snowboarding games? Well in my opinion snowboarding games are probably seen as a "middle tier" genre. It's not worthy a "AAA" title budget but it's also too big to be an "indie/download" title.

Personally here's what I like to see.

Snowboard Kids 3 - 3DS

1080 Snowboarding - Wii U

SSX "4" - PS4/Xbone/PC (Bring in someone who knows why the fuck SSX used to be awesome)

Snowboarding games are cool, but the Skate series control scheme made them obsolete. It's why Tony Hawk is on mobile, it's such a step back comparatively.

Middle tier games aren't as prevalent as they used to be. Mainly because you have to sell a ton these days to make up for dev costs. I don't think the market for snowboarding games is really there like it once was. I'd love to see more of them though.

Same thing that happened to skateboarding games and everything else Xtreme Sports-related. It's just not in fashion anymore. Too bad, because that stuff made for some fun video games.

I'm actually surprised there aren't more. The whole GoPro Mountain Bike/Snowboard crowd is still there. Same with skating and most extreme sports. It seems most of them are receiving more exposure but the cost to produce a 'decent' game based on them is out there. Plus I imagine the licensing fees for decent music, gear, etc ... it's just too expensive to not sell a billion copies.

Sad though, those were some of my favorite. Mirra BMX, Shaun Murray Wakeboarding, Downhill Domination, SSX, Splashdown, MX vs ATV ... and others I'm sure I'm forgetting were awesome 2 player vs games. Would be amazing with 4-8 people online.

There's your answer.

no more MX vs ATV games.

MXGP came out not long ago, but It is definitely a dying genre of sports game. And i kind of miss it tbh. The old school tony hawks games, dave mirra and mat hoffman BMX games, aggressive inline. They all played similarly, same OTT exaggerated trick fests, but i liked that they where there. As the generations go on, our choices grow smaller in terms of games...which sucks tbh.

Are skateboards still a thing for young people?
I thought now it's nothing more than an artefact from the 80/90's.

It still is a big thing for me, and i'm 25. Most people around my local skatepark are 20+. For them a new Skate on current gen would be a systemseller.

The new SSX was awesome. Here's hoping for a new one SOON.
lies. worst SSX game by a large margin

take out wing suit-in fact take out all "required gear"
bring back individual tracks all over world-giant mountains split up into "levels" is annoying and boring
bring back better character VO work
put a better emphasis on tricks again-have racing of course-but have it take the backseat

I thought SSX 2012 was pretty awesome. Much better than some make it out to be.

I thought it didn't sell especially well though so a sequel is unlikely?
