I miss Snowboarding games. What happened?

The moment I saw the thread title I instantly thought "Snowboard Kids!"

I loved that game man, hated what they dome to the DS version. Gonna try play it this weekend now haha

And it's damn good.

OK, must have missed this. What is it?

Shaun white was bad They used the assasins creed engine....

Ea should release a new game called skate+snow

Skate engine was really capable of doing snowboarding.....

Oh it definitely had a few problems but what games don't?

But nailing a run on it without crashing once was just one of the most satisfying things to pull off. The tricks you could pull were insane and just plain fun. I loved that game. Music was great too.

It could definitely do with a split screen mode though, that would completely make the game for me. Sadly the old consoles wouldn't be able to handle it.

That's why we have next gen!

Seriously, the game looked really nice. It would look perfectly fine just with 1080p 60fps.

Also really needs to come to PC (and give the PC version splitscreen ffs).

I believe during the 3D revolution on consoles developers were making sports games to find the market sweet spot.

That market sweet spot is Madden/FIFA. No snowboards in sight.

They became too expensive to make compared to the amount they usually sell.

Now we will see the occasional lower priced download only release on PC or console... and of course a good amount of mobile games. Some of which may eventually get ported.

New SSX had its ups and downs for sure. The freaking Africa courses inside a dark volcano. I nearly threw my controller at the wall multiple times.

Lower popularity?

So if it popular enough with the mainstream audiences with get great games but if if it falls off we get lesser made titles? It seems that if a quality snowboarding game was made it might spike general interest within our gaming community.

People still snowboard and skateboard, they are just as popular as ever to those who partake. Maybe it has more to do with high score games being frowned upon or the big sellers being games with cinematic scope.

Who knows maybe one day, these sports will return to the main stream spotlight.

The problem with SSX 2012 is that it's Trials on a snowboard, not a successor to Tricky & SSX 3.

They messed up the 'classic' controls, removed the reset feature in favor of trial-by-fail-state, which was made worse by the number of blind landing jumps (which were themselves made worse by the number of bottomless pits and jumps that took you off the mountain completely).

I would buy 100 HD remakes of either Tricky or 3 before I'd buy the successor to 2012.

The new SSX was alright in retrospect. Too much cheese with the level design and deadly descents, but beyond that I can concede it was enjoyable. Immediately after getting it new though, I was disappointed as all hell.

1080 was really fun at the time. Amped was good, a few of the SSX games were great. Edit: Forgot I bought Stoked Big Air on PC ages ago... it sucked.

I think SSX 3 was my favourite. I always wish though, the really outrageous tricks didn't exist. It was never going to be sim or even close, but some of the tricks were just silly.

Really enjoyed how the music was mixed in SSX. I think 3 was done the best. The way the effects changed the music when you were in mid air, the lyrics fading into instrumental when you were struggling. Just really creative.

The Steam early access for SNOW was something I hoped would fill the gap for these types of games but (yes I know it's alpha) it's a mess and barely resembles a playable game that will ever amount to anything decent imo.

Stoked is a really good game once you put time in to it. It may not be as polished as the Skate series of games, but that would be the closest parallel to it. Problem is, hardly anyone knows it exists.

Pretty sure the official site still sells the digital PC version. Seems crazy they never put it on Steam.

I don`t understand the hate SSX 2012 is getting. I really liked it. Snowboarding and the wingsuit felt great and were fun, and i even liked that they toned down the crazy over the top style of former games.

I loved all the main tracks of the mountains (except for Africa), but some of the sidetracks lacked a little bit and gave the game an uneven feel.

But still - i was very satisfied with the new SSX.

SSX 2012 came without real-time multiplayer (thing that I wanted the most).
The maps, while incredibly big and beautifull, were full of those death pits that required a lot of try and error. Also, the whole game was focused on making a lot of tricks and boost all the way down to the pit of death.

In race mode, you had to make tricks to get boost and win, in score mode, you had to make tricks to boost and make more tricks. Felt too repetitive. It was still fun, but if you compare it with what SSX was, it just sucked.

If Snowboard Kids 4 lands on Wii U I'll buy a Wii U.
If SSX 2015 lands on new gen, I'll buy new gen if I dont have it already.

Love snowboard games.

Same thing that happend to Tony Hawk's (Skateboard Games)

But in 2013 Iwata talked about reviving 1080 sometime for Wii U iirc

Got a link to that? I'd buy it.

Oh sry it was Miyamoto not Iwata
I think it was this

"Miyamoto also talked about the prospects for another entry in 1080° Snowboarding."
Miyamoto said:
I guess we could have looked at different approaches with 1080 [1080° Snowboarding] on N64 and tried to find ways to extend that franchise or build it in a way so we could maintain that brand until now… but it’s always a difficult decision in terms of which ones to choose.

Nothing much, but it was mentioned :P

I have to admit the last 2 were pretty shit, but i still enjoyed them. god knows what happened to the series after this...one of my favorite franchises destroyed :(

I remember Tony Hawk's 3 being one of my first online games on PC. dem two-minute-combos after time ran out. ._.

This thread reminds me of all the alternate sports games that Microsoft was funding during the OG Xbox period. Amped, Rallisport Challenge, NBA Inside Drive, TopSpin. That was such an awesome time

I would love to see a Next-Gen Shaun White Snowboarding or Stoked with an open world.

Had hopes for SNOW, but it's evolving pretty slow atm (yea i know it's an alpha).

Also a Skate 4 would be awesome, but I've seen this post on reddit yesterday, that makes me sad:

I'll piggy back on the top comment since this will probably get buried otherwise.
I ran www.skatefluckit.com from 2006 until now (it's still got a decent amount of traffic). I was invited to every EA community day for EA Skate, ran giveaways for them, moderated their official forums, released cover art before any big name sites, on Fluckit, so I've got a lot of experience with the game and the politics/drama that went on with the company.
EA dumped Skate to work on SSX, which they marketed as being made by the Skate team, which was a lie. They had two employees from Black Box who worked on Skate, neither of which had anything to do with development.
At this point, Skate being remade is pretty slim and even if it was, I doubt any of the original development team would be working on it. I believe certain aspects of the game are not owned by EA, but by the previous producers, I believe Jay Balmer has the rights to the control scheme even.
Cuz and Scott B. and some of the original team work for/started Exploding Barrel Games and they focus primarily on mobile games now. I've spoken to Cuz about the possibility of them making a skateboarding game and it seems like it isn't something they are really interested in, since they're in it to make a living and Skateboarding games just don't make money, hence why Skate was cancelled in the first place.
I would love to see it released on the One, but I doubt it will be. Hopefully another company will come along and make a realistic skateboarding game with the same filming features and online multiplayer that made Skate so great, however, reaching that level will be tough. Skate is just a tremendous series and I wish it was never cancelled.
