Did I fuck up?

Just traded my RTX 4070 with a friend for his (new) 7900 XTX (yes XTX, not XT)

He’s more interested in DLSS so I figured sure, if it doesn’t work out I can sell the card.

Just installed it now!

If it was a 4070 Super or a Ti, there could be an argument that you made a bad deal. But a base 4070 is much slower than a 7900XTX.
At 4K for example, the 7900XTX is close to 60% faster in rasterization.
DLSS is a big advantage. But XeSS 1.3 is also very good. And FSR 3.1 looks very promising.
The 7900XTX does use significantly more power, but with an undervolt, you can narrow the difference.

Yes buddy, was standard 4070.

I’ll try a few games. I’ve already been told to skip FSR and use XESS.

Out of curiosity though I was just trying cyberpunk and Christ FSR is SHIT. Misty’s hair was a mess.

With some games you might have to swap the XeSS dll to the newer 1.3 version.
I'm not sure CP 2077 already has 1.3

What. Man.. he certainly got the short end of the stick with that lol wth. Unless he needs it for work or Ai thats a massive downgrade on his part.

The 4070 is decent, if baseline for playing current games in 1440P. It isn't that great in Ray Tracing (around a 3080, if that) and Path tracing well, lets say its not worth it on that GPU even with DLSS 3. The 7900XTX is significantly faster in most titles. So much so that having DLSS on won't counter that in most cases. The 7900XTX can easily play the latest games in 4K no problem. There's an update for FSR soon what should improive it a lot and in most Ray tracing titles the XTX will likely come ahead. Unless it has lots of RT effects like CP2077 and Alan Wake 2. Which are few and far between.

Trading in a high end GPU with 24GB VRAM with one half that and much slower is insane. If he's happy with it though, then you got a crazy good deal.

Wow thanks I didn’t realize that.

I’ll try and drop in the newer .dll

Also remember that the 7900XTX has a 60% advantage over then 4070.
So you can play native and still have a 30% performance advantage.

Don't forget to enable SAM for that GPU. AMD works much better with rebar than nvidia.
On your motherboard bios, you need to enable Above 4g Decoding and Rebar Support.
Then on the AMD control panel, enable SAM.

I'm not mugging him off haha, I've known him for over 15 years.
He barely plays games and mainly pisses about. His account shows things like The Last Of Us having less than 1 hour playtime.

He basically bought a flagship card, run a few games at max for 20 minutes each and then got bored and wanted to trade so he can do the same 20 minutes but with ray tracing.

He has too much time to kill and short attention.

Thanks, I already had them enabled. I'm on a 13600k, so hopefully I'm not missing out on much by not being full AMD.

Fair play. Doesn't look like he's going to miss it and gets to try out some DLSS and Ray tracing. The 7900XTX is a beast of a card. Enjoy.

Talking about the XTX.. for those in the old Blighty you can get it for £767, which is an insane deal. From Ebuyer's Ebay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/404451749207?siteid=3&customid=2682243040&toolid=10001 with 20% off code.

Please tell me this is a joke. The 7900XTX absolutely wipes the floor with the 4070. DLSS and FG are VERY nice features, but they won't come remotely close to overcoming the advantage in raw performance the 7900XTX has. It will only get better once FSR 3.1 comes. If not, XeSS is just as awesome to fall back on.

The 7900 XTX is competitive in raw performance past the 4080. Now, you could argue that the DLSS/FG advantages on a 4080 overtake the 7900XTX. But anyone with a 7900XTX should not trade down to get anything less than 4080. DLSS and FG are VERY nice features that AMD has a ways to go to play catch up on, but the newest XeSS has shrunk the DLSS gap in a way that FSR has yet to do so.

yeah, Radeon GPUs have some quite good deals going right now and if (that's a VERY VERY big IF) FSR 3.1 can drastically improve the 7900 XTX will likely last longer than any non-4080 GPU.

True AMD reacted to the DGPU market for RDNA 2 and 3. GPU prices are finally getting lower in the low to mid tier; with mid range SKU launches and refreshes this year. Which is needed rn. 7800XT/7900GRE, plus XT and XTX are actually worth their value. While Geforce stuff still a little to really overpriced for what they are. Especially this late in the life cycle.

But yeah, if FSR improves a lot I can see a bigger shift towards AMD GPU's outside the flagships and enthusiasts that don't mind plonking down the cash for them. If FSR 3.1 reaches XeSS quality I think thats good enough for most people. And bigger improvements and directly competing with DLSS would be even better. Really interested when they release RDNA 4, and what it brings to the table. Better value if anything. If it reaches within 10-15% of the 7900XT for $450, or less.

You said a 4070 Ti might make it a bad deal. That is wrong. The 4080 is the only instance where it would be a bad deal. The 4070 Ti Super closes that gap a bit with 4 extra GB of memory and a 256-bit bus.

Still I think 7900 XTX is a better GPU than the 4070 Ti Super, but not by much. I wouldn't deal with the hassle of a trade for that GPU.

Trading a 4070 Super or non-super for a 7900 XTX is just straight up highway robbery.

I hummed and hawed last fall about building a new PC. Ended up buying and putting everything together in November minus the GPU. Ordered the 4070 Ti Super back in February. Build went perfectly, overclocked the ram right away, system runs quiet and cool.

Only weird thing that happens is once every maybe 10 boot ups it'll take like 60 seconds to boot. Otherwise boots to windows in less than 10.

Grabbed a Dell G2724D 1440p 165Hz monitor as well. Coming from 1080p 60Hz it's quite the difference.

Stay away from that Asrock motherboard. Get the B650M-HDV/M.2 instead. Much better motherboard.

Just ordered two Noctua NF-A12’s in black to replace the fans on my peerless assassin 120, started to notice a humming tone recently coming from the two included thermalright fans that came with the cooler. Hoping the Noctua are as quiet as people say they are :messenger_grimmacing_

Welp- one of my FC120 Deepcool case fans isn’t working properly now. Decided to ditch RGB and replace all those with some Arctic P14 Max fans. Heard good things about them and shoild help my 7900xt stay cooler.

I need a little advice guys.

I just bought a 14700k with a msi z790 gaming plus board and corsair dominator titanium ddr5 at 7200 CAS 34 (to replace a 10700k with DDR4).

I currently have a NZXT kraken x52 aio (240 mm) to cool the CPU. I fear it might not be sufficient to keep the 14700k chill and is leaning toward a 360 mm one.

Is the difference noticeable between a 360mm aio and a 240 one ?

I think if i switched I would stay with nzxt for their current kraken 360 model for aesthetic reasons and also to limit the number of different software needed to run the PC (everything fan related is NZXT branded with NZXT hubs so having everything related to cooling in one place is a must). Do some of you have experience with this model ? how does it perform ?

For information, I mainly use my PC for gaming at the moment, but plan to do some light to medium CAD and rendering work on it (GPU and CPU based) starting from this year.
Hey, does the Nzxt cam software use a lot of background cpu usage?

They are the best. I have been building and upgrading PCs constantly since 2012ish (after a break of 15 years being console only). I always got PWM fans but usually looked for deals but made sure the fans always had a name brand. I finally bit the bullet and started buying Noctunas and I wont go back really. They are rock solid, quiet and totally worth the price. Always good to catch them on sale though.

Yeah when I unboxed them I knew straight away they were well made just from the weight. Very silent too glad I went with them, I’m actually thinking of getting an AIO cooler now I was going to go with the NZXT Kraken 360mm for the screen on the pump and to add a bit more light to my pc but I think I’m just gonna get the Arctic liquid freezer lll 360mm and 1 more Noctua fan and put the Noctua fans on the Arctic. Cooling a 5800x3D which to be honest the peerless assassin I have has done great for the price but I’m just bored and want to upgrade something :messenger_grinning_sweat:.

Also looking at ordering a 4070 super fe at £579 but my mind is telling me to wait for the 5070 in case it has 16GB vram. Would like to buy a 4070ti super for the extra vram ideally but at £800-£850 for a 3 fan card it’s probably a bit out of budget for me personally.

Well ended up getting a 4070 super fe, has a little bit of coil whine but I think I can live with it. surprised how well this thing cools itself. It’s running cooler than my old gigabyte 3060ti

GAF Master Racers, I summon Thee in order to help me updating my potato PC.

This is what I currently got:

Motherboard MSI B350M Mortar + DSB1
CPU AMD Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz-3.6GHz 16MB AM4
SSD Crucial MX300 275GB SATA III
Western Digital 1TB SATA III 64MB Black
G.Skill Kit 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 2400MHz FlareX Ryzen
GPU Gigabyte GeForce® GTX 1060 G1 GAMING 6GB GD5
Power Supply Seasonic M12II 620W Evo Edition 80+ Bronze

I'm not up to date with the PC market, but I know for a fact that this build is quite old and probably I can't salvage anything.

Therefore, I'm thinking about a modest upgrade, roughly between 800€, because I also want to get a monitor probably.

Any recommendations?

You can get a 5800X3D for around 300 Euros. That motherboard is compatible with it.
You can get a 32Gb DDR4 kit for under 100€. Don't bother going for something really fast, as the 5800X3D doesn't really need it that much.
Then get a Crucial P3 Plus 1TB, for around 75€.
Lastly, Powercolor Radeon RX 7800 XT for 500 euros. Or Asrock RX 7600 XT Challenger 16GB, for 365€.

Note, that these prices can be a bit higher or lower, depending on the country you are in.

IMO your most viable upgrade path is:

Replace the CPU with a 5700X3D or 5800X3D depending on what's on sale. You'll probably need to upgrade your BIOS though. https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B350M-MORTAR/support
Get a RTX 4070, some good sales in Europe ATM for around 575€.
Get a new SSD 1TB/2TB when you find something on sale.
Getting a new RAM kit 32GB when you have money for it, 3200-3600, this is the lowest priority upgrade.

Don't order anything until next week as Computex starts and prices might change/new products get announced that would change recommendations.

Looking around amazon in Europe (germany one as an example) you can get:
5700x3d - 229€
32GB (2x16) Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3600 - 80€
SN770 1TB - 76€
Saphire Pulse RX7900 GRE - 579€

You also have a RTX4070 at 575€ and a RTX4070 Super at around 605€ so if you prefer team green, that's what you can get that is similar.
The net cost is around 960 so if you want to keep it closer to the 800€ mark you should drop down to a RX7700XT probably which hovers around 400/420€.

To that you also add shipping costs but they shouldn't be that high.
Like it has been said, computex can change prices a bit so you can wait for that.

What resolution do you use?

EDIT: I just realized that your B350 only supports PCIe Gen3.
So, whatever you do, do not buy a card with only 8X lanes, such as the 7600XT. Make sure your next GPU has 16 lanes.

I could update the bios but maybe, since it's a complete new build I could get a new motherboard too?

For 4K I have my 65" inch Sony TV and PS5. I honestly don't feel the need to play at 4K on PC.

Maybe 1080p or 1440p at max?

If it's for a new build, then you might as well go for AM5. That way you get future proofed for a possible upgrade a couple of yeas from now.
You can get a B650 for under 200 euros, especially considering you have amazon business.
And you can get a Ryzen 7600 for 200 euros. This performs close to a 5800X3D.

BTW, if you are selling the old parts of your PC, you might still get a few hundred euros back.

You think so? I honestly have no idea what people may be interested in on my current build. Besides the monitors perhaps :messenger_tears_of_joy:

There is always someone that might be interested in a cheap machine. Maybe something for the kids. Or for an office to do Microsoft Word.
Check your local sales. You probably have OLX in your area.

Btw, this is the current monitor that I have: https://www.viewsonic.com/eu/products/sheet/XG2401

Time for an upgrade too, no? I have it paired with a Dell monitor for Design purposes, but I was thinking about getting a curved one.

I would recommend upgrading to 1440p. It's a big improvement over 1080p.
And with tech like DLSS, XeSS, TSR and FSR, you can recoup performance with upscaling.

I don't know your budget for the monitor, but here is a good one: MSI G274QPX
It costs around 450 euros. But with amazon business, it might go to370-350 euros.

With Amazon business it goes around 384€, on amazon.es.

I usually order things from amazon.es. I'm not 100% sure if Amazon business is transversal and I can also use it to order from other countries.

Because the monitor you mentioned is way cheaper in Amazon.de in comparision with Amazon.es.

I think you can, because the reason you pay less, is because you don't pay VAT or IVA. Not because Amazon has some special offer.

The easiest and best way without switching out a whole new PC would be to update bios and drop in a 5700/5800X3D (get whichever one is cheaper), like others have suggested Then spend the rest on GPU. Could wait a few months for RDNA 4 or Battlemage - Intels next big desktop discrete GPU. Or perhaps look into a 7900 GRE/7900 XT. And if you have any cash to spare, maybe look into getting a new PSU.. something like a decent Corsair RMe/x 750-850W+

Altogether probably in or aroundabouts $800 and a massive upgrade over your current system.

Just upgraded from an RX 580 (lol) to an RX 7700 XT, current setup:

Ryzen 5 5600X
Gigabyte B550 AORUS ELITE AX V2
Radeon RX 7700 XT 12GB
Kingston Fury Beast 2x8GB DDR4
Seasonic Focus Gold 650W

Some games were pretty much unplayable (I think Alan Wake 2 doesn't even run properly, if at all, on Polaris) on the old GPU so this is a massive upgrade.

If it's for a new build, then you might as well go for AM5. That way you get future proofed for a possible upgrade a couple of yeas from now.
You can get a B650 for under 200 euros, especially considering you have amazon business.

I'm configuring the build on Userbenchmark with a MSI B650 and all the RAM models I choose from are are saying that they are incompatible with the motherboard.

What am I missing?

Please don't use UserBenchmark. That site is complete trash.

The reason why it says it is not compatible, is because that motherboard uses DDR5. Not DDR4.
Since you are going with a 7800X3D, a 6000 Mbps kit is enough.

Also, I would for that price of GPU, I would rather go with a 4070 Super. It costs around 650€
Has lower performance in rasterization. But superior performance in ray-tracing. And it has DLSS, the best upscaler in the market. And has lower power usage.
